EISCAT observations during MAC/SINE and MAC/Epsilon
The EISCAT incoherent scatter radar facility in Tromsoe, Norway was operated during the MAC/SINE campaign for 78 hours in the period 10 June to 17 July 1987, and during the MAC/Epsilon campaign for 90 hours in the period 15 October to 5 November 1987. The VHF (224 MHz) radar operations during MAC/SINE yielded most interesting observations of strong coherent echoes from the mesopause region. Characteristic data of these polar mesospheric summer echoes are presented. The UHF (933 MHz) radar operations during MAC/Epsilon were done with 18 deg off zenith beam and allows the deduction of meridonal and horizontal wind components as well as radial velocity spectra in addition to the usual electron density profiles in the D and lower E regions. Some results from the VHF and UHF radars indicating the presence of gravity waves are examined
Development of the mesospheric Na layer at 69° N during the Geminids meteor shower 2010
The ECOMA sounding rocket campaign in 2010 was performed to investigate the
charge state and number density of meteoric smoke particles during the
Geminids meteor shower in December 2010. The ALOMAR Na lidar
contributed to the campaign with measurements of sodium number density,
temperature and line-of-sight wind between 80 and 110 km altitude
over Andøya in northern Norway. This paper investigates a possible
connection between the Geminids meteor shower and the mesospheric sodium
layer. We compare with data from a meteor radar and from a rocket-borne
in situ particle instrument on three days. Our main result is that the sodium
column density is smaller during the Geminids meteor shower than the winter
average at the same latitude. Moreover, during two of the three years
considered, the sodium column density decreased steadily during these three
weeks of the year. Both the observed decrease of Na column density by
30% and of meteoric smoke particle column density correlate well with a
corresponding decrease of sporadic meteor echoes. We found no correlation
between Geminids meteor flux rates and sodium column density, nor between
sporadic meteors and Na column density (<I>R</I> = 0.25). In general, we
found the Na column density to be at very low values for winter,
between 1.8 and 2.6 × 10<sup>13</sup> m<sup>−2</sup>. We detected two meteor
trails containing sodium, on 13 December 2010 at 87.1 km and on 19
December 2010 at 84 km. From these meteor trails, we estimate a
global meteoric Na flux of 121 kg d<sup>−1</sup> and a global total
meteoric influx of 20.2 t d<sup>−1</sup>
Homozygous disruption of P450 side-chain cleavage (CYP11A1) is associated with prematurity, complete 46,XY sex reversal, and severe adrenal failure
Disruption of the P450 side-chain cleavage cytochrome (P450scc) enzyme due to deleterious mutations of the CYP11A1 gene is thought to be incompatible with fetal survival because of impaired progesterone production by the fetoplacental unit. We present a 46, XY patient with a homozygous disruption of CYP11A1.The child was born prematurely with complete sex reversal and severe adrenal insufficiency. Laboratory data showed diminished or absent steroidogenesis in all pathways. Molecular genetic analysis of the CYP11A1 gene revealed a homozygous single nucleotide deletion leading to a premature termination at codon position 288. This mutation will delete highly conserved regions of the P450scc enzyme and thus is predicted to lead to a nonfunctional protein. Both healthy parents were heterozygous for this mutation.Our report demonstrates that severe disruption of P450scc can be compatible with survival in rare instances. Furthermore, defects in this enzyme are inherited in an autosomal-recessive fashion, and heterozygote carriers can be healthy and fertile. The possibility of P450scc-independent pathways of steroid synthesis in addition to the current concept of luteoplacental shift of progesterone synthesis in humans has to be questioned
Topological and functional aspects of the proton conductor, F, of the Escherichia coli ATP-synthase
The isolated H conductor, F , of the Escherichia co1i ATP-synthase consists of three subunits, a, b, and c. H -permeable liposomes can be reconstit~ted with F and lipids; addition of F-ATPase reconstitutes a functional ATP-synthase. Mutants with altered or misslng F subunits are defective in H conduction. Thus, all three subunits are necessary for the expression of H conduction. The subunits a and b contain binding sites for F• Computer calculations, cross-links, membrane-permeating photo-reactive labels, and proteases were used to develop tentative structural models for the individual F subunits
Using Network-Text Analysis to Characterise Learner Engagement in Active Video Watching
Video is becoming more and more popular as a learning medium in a variety of educational settings, ranging from flipped classrooms to MOOCs to informal learning. The prevailing educational usage of videos is based on watching prepared videos, which calls for accompanying video usage with activities to promote constructive learning. In the Active Video Watching (AVW) approach, learner engagement during video watching is induced via interactive notetaking, similar to video commenting in social video-sharing platforms. This coincides with the JuxtaLearn practice, in which student-created videos were shared on a social networking platform and commented by other students. Drawing on the experience of both AVW and JuxtaLearn, we combine and refine analysis techniques to characterise learner engagement. The approach draws on network-text analysis of learner-generated comments as a basis. This allows for capturing pedagogically relevant aspects of divergence, convergence and (dis-) continuity in textual commenting behaviour related to different learner types. The lexical-semantic analytics approach using learner-generated artefacts provides deep insights into learner engagement. This has broader application in video-based learning environments
Summer sudden Na number density enhancements measured with the ALOMAR Weber Na Lidar
We present summer Na-densities and atmospheric temperatures measured 80 to 110 km above the Arctic Lidar Observatory for Middle Atmosphere Research (ALOMAR). The Weber Na Lidar is part of ALOMAR, located at 69&deg; N in Norway, 150 km north of the Arctic Circle. The sun does not set here during the summer months, and measurements require a narrowband Faraday Anomalous Dispersion Optical Filter (FADOF). <br><br> We discuss an observed sudden enhancement in the Na number density around 22:00 UT on 1 to 2 June 2006. We compare this observation with previous summer measurements and find a frequent appearance of Na number density enhancements near local midnight. We describe the time of appearance, the altitude distribution, the duration and the strength of these enhancements and compare them to winter observations. We investigate possible formation mechanisms and, as others before, we find a strong link between these Na number density enhancements and sporadic E layers
Payload Charging Events in the Mesosphere and Their Impact on Langmuir Type Electric Probes
Three sounding rockets were launched from Andøya Rocket Range in the ECOMA campaign in December 2010. The aim was to study the evolution of meteoric smoke particles during a major meteor shower. Of the various instruments onboard the rocket payload, this paper presents the data from a multi-Needle Langmuir Probe (m-NLP) and a charged dust detector. The payload floating potential, as observed using the m-NLP instrument, shows charging events on two of the three flights. These charging events cannot be explained using a simple charging model, and have implications towards the use of fixed bias Langmuir probes on sounding rockets investigating mesospheric altitudes. We show that for a reliable use of a single fixed bias Langmuir probe as a high spatial resolution relative density measurement, each payload should also carry an additional instrument to measure payload floating potential, and an instrument that is immune to spacecraft charging and measures absolute plasma density
New attempts to understand nanodiamond stardust
We report on a concerted effort aimed at understanding the origin and history
of the pre-solar nanodiamonds in meteorites including the astrophysical sources
of the observed isotopic abundance signatures. This includes measurement of
light elements by secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS), analysis of
additional heavy trace elements by accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) and
dynamic calculations of r-process nucleosynthesis with updated nuclear
properties. Results obtained indicate: a) there is no evidence for the former
presence of now extinct 26Al and 44Ti in our diamond samples other than what
can be attributed to silicon carbide and other "impurities"; this does not
offer support for a supernova (SN) origin but neither does it negate it; b)
analysis by AMS of platinum in "bulk diamond" yields an overabundance of r-only
198Pt that at face value seems more consistent with the neutron burst than with
the separation model for the origin of heavy trace elements in the diamonds,
although this conclusion is not firm given analytical uncertainties; c) if the
Xe-H pattern was established by an unadulterated r-process, it must have been a
strong variant of the main r-process, which possibly could also account for the
