    This collection is chiefly letters written by Earl Conard Hays, Jr., while serving as a United States Army chaplain during World War II to his fiancé and wife, Florence Macon Locke Hays. The letters discuss Hays’ services and sermons, the state of the war, and the fastest method of wartime correspondence between Conard and Florence. There are explanations of several United States Army practices, including censorship, movements, and post-war demobilization.; The collection also includes items gathered by Hays relating to World War II campaigns, Hays’ wartime service, and the leave he took in the Palestine area and Switzerland in 1945, after the end of hostilities and prior to his return home. There are postcards and postcard booklets of various towns and cities from different periods in Hays’ service; notable areas include Massachusetts, North Africa, Italy, and Switzerland. There is a large panoramic photograph of the 1943 July Harvard Chaplain School graduating class. There are several newspapers and newspaper clippings relating to the late and post-war period. Also included in the collection is Hays’ Bible owned before, during, and after World War II with his handwritten thoughts and notations on various sermons
