Implementing an Evidence Based Fall Prevention Program in a Long-Term Care Facility

Falls among the elderly are a significant problem with severe consequences. Residents of long-term facilities account for twenty percent of fatal falls. It is imperative that evidence-based practices be implemented at this level of care to address this problem. A multifaceted evidence-based fall prevention program was implemented at a 70 bed, skilled nursing, long-term care facility located in Florida, whose fall rate of 7.14 is above than the national average (2.74-5.48). The fall prevention program included staff education, implementation of a checklist for universal fall precautions, post fall huddles, and the appointment of a falls champion. One-month post intervention results included a statistically significant increase in pre-test post-test knowledge (two-tailed p-value .004) and 100% compliance in conducting post-fall huddles. As the evidence demonstrates, fall rates should decrease as a result of implementing targeted multifactorial programs. On-going surveillance will be needed to evaluate the impact of these interventions on the long-term fall rate within the facility

Epidemiological spreading of mortgage default

This paper introduces mathematical models to capture the spreading of epidemics to explain the expansion of mortgage default events in the United States. Here we use the state of infectiousness and death to represent the subsequent steps of payment delinquency and default, respectively. Since the local economic structure influences regional unemployment that is a strong driver of mortgage default, we model interdependencies of regional mortgage default rates through employment conditions as well as vicinity. Based on a large sample between 2000 and 2014 of loan-level data, the estimation of key parameters of the model is proposed. The model’s forecast accuracy shows an above average performance compared to well-known approaches like linear regression or logit models. The key findings may be useful in understanding the dynamics of mortgage defaults and its spatial spreading

Für die Festlegung der Größengrenzen der einzelnen Leitfäden wurde auf die Unternehmens-daten verschiedener amtlicher Erhebungen und Statistiken zurückgegriffen. Im Folgenden wird dargestellt, welche Betriebsgrößen jeweils als Grenze zwischen zwei Leitfäden gewählt wurden und aus welchem Grund bzw. auf welcher Basis die jeweilige Betriebsgröße als Grenze gewählt wurde. Dabei ist zu beachten, dass der Übergang von einer Größenklasse in die nächste fließend und die Grenzen damit nicht trennscharf sind und nicht sein sollen. Vielmehr stellen die Größengrenzen Richtwerte dar, die Unternehmen eine Orientierung geben sollen bei der Beurteilung, welcher Leitfaden für ihr Unternehmen geeignet ist. As detailed, the central part of the continent faces the greatest impact from climate change with countries facing an average cost of US$22 million annually, if they adopt a proactive adaptation policy and a US$54 million annual average, if a reactive approach is adopted. Securing Birth Certificate Documents with DNA Profiles

The birth certificate is a document used by a person to obtain identification and licensing documents throughout their lifetime. For identity verification, the birth certificate provides limited information to support a person’s claim of identity. Authentication to the birth certificate is strictly a matter of possession. DNA profiling is becoming a commodity analysis that can be done accurately in under two hours with little human intervention. The DNA profile is a superior biometric to add to a birth record because it is stable throughout a person’s life and beyond. Acceptability of universal DNA profiling will depend heavily on privacy and safety concerns. This paper uses the U.S. FBI CODIS profile as a basis to discuss the effectiveness of DNA profiling and to provide a practical basis for a discussion of potential privacy and authenticity controls.
