    Proteins identification of wheat-rye translocation lines by MALDI-TOF-TOF mass spectrometry and ESI-QTOF/MS

    OBJECTIVE: To examine the relationship between Timed Up and Go (TUG) performance, verbal executive function (EF) performance, and quality-of-life (QOL) measures in Parkinson's disease (PD). DESIGN: Cross-sectional. SETTING: Sixteen movement disorder centers from across the United States. PARTICIPANTS: Patients with PD (N=1964). INTERVENTIONS: Not applicable. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: TUG test, immediate and delayed 5-word recall, verbal fluency, PD QOL Questionnaire. RESULTS: TUG performance and verbal EF performance were significantly associated with, and predictors of, QOL measures, having the greatest association and predictability with the mobility domain of the QOL measures. CONCLUSIONS: The TUG test and verbal EF tests have QOL correlates, making the combined evaluation of mobility, cognitive, and QOL decline a potential examination tool to evaluate the sequelae of PD

    A 10 nV/rt Hz noise level 32-channel neural impedance sensing ASIC for local activation imaging on nerve section

    A 10 nV/rt Hz noise level 32-channel neural impedance sensing ASIC is presented for the application of local activation imaging in nerve section. It is increasingly known that the monitoring and control of nerve signals can improve physical and mental health. Major nerves, such as the vagus nerve and the sciatic nerve, consist of a bundle of fascicles. Therefore, to accurately control a particular application without any side effects, we need to know exactly which fascicle was activated. The only way to find locally activated fascicle is to use electrical impedance tomography (EIT). The ASIC to be introduced is designed for neural EIT applications. A neural impedance sensing ASIC was implemented using CMOS 180-nm process technology. The integrated input referred noise was calculated to be 0.46 ÎźVrms (noise floor 10.3 nVrms/rt Hz) in the measured noise spectrum. At an input of 80 mV, the squared correlation coefficient for linear regression was 0.99998. The amplification gain uniformity of 32 channels was in the range of + 0.23% and - 0.29%. Using the resistor phantom, the simplest model of nerve, it was verified that a single readout channel could detect a signal-to- noise ratio of 75.6 dB or more. Through the reservoir phantom, real-time EIT images were reconstructed at a rate of 8.3 frames per second. The developed ASIC has been applied to in vivo experiments with rat sciatic nerves, and signal processing is currently underway to obtain activated nerve cross-sectional images.     Direct Visualization of the Reversible O2−/O− Redox Process in Li‐Rich Cathode Materials

    Conventional cathodes of Li‐ion batteries mainly operate through an insertion–extraction process involving transition metal redox. These cathodes will not be able to meet the increasing requirements until lithium‐rich layered oxides emerge with beyond‐capacity performance. Nevertheless, in‐depth understanding of the evolution of crystal and excess capacity delivered by Li‐rich layered oxides is insufficient. Herein, various in situ technologies such as X‐ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy are employed for a typical material Li1.2Ni0.2Mn0.6O2, directly visualizing O−O− (peroxo oxygen dimers) bonding mostly along the c‐axis and demonstrating the reversible O2−/O− redox process. Additionally, the formation of the peroxo OO bond is calculated via density functional theory, and the corresponding OO bond length of ≈1.3 Å matches well with the in situ Raman results. These findings enrich the oxygen chemistry in layered oxides and open opportunities to design high‐performance positive electrodes for lithium‐ion batteries.A typical Li‐rich material Li1.2Ni0.2Mn0.6O2 is systematically analyzed by in situ X‐ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy.     Brown Planthopper (N. lugens Stal) Feeding Behaviour on Rice Germplasm as an Indicator of Resistance

    BACKGROUND: The brown planthopper (BPH) Nilaparvata lugens (Stal) is a serious pest of rice in Asia. Development of novel control strategies can be facilitated by comparison of BPH feeding behaviour on varieties exhibiting natural genetic variation, and then elucidation of the underlying mechanisms of resistance. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: BPH feeding behaviour was compared on 12 rice varieties over a 12 h period using the electrical penetration graph (EPG) and honeydew clocks. Seven feeding behaviours (waveforms) were identified and could be classified into two phases. The first phase involved patterns of sieve element location including non penetration (NP), pathway (N1+N2+N3), xylem (N5) [21] and two new feeding waveforms, derailed stylet mechanics (N6) and cell penetration (N7). The second feeding phase consisted of salivation into the sieve element (N4-a) and sieve element sap ingestion (N4-b). Production of honeydew drops correlated with N4-b waveform patterns providing independent confirmation of this feeding behaviour. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: Overall variation in feeding behaviour was highly correlated with previously published field resistance or susceptibility of the different rice varieties: BPH produced lower numbers of honeydew drops and had a shorter period of phloem feeding on resistant rice varieties, but there was no significant difference in the time to the first salivation (N4-b). These qualitative differences in behaviour suggest that resistance is caused by differences in sustained phloem ingestion, not by phloem location. Cluster analysis of the feeding and honeydew data split the 12 rice varieties into three groups: susceptible, moderately resistant and highly resistant. The screening methods that we have described uncover novel aspects of the resistance mechanism (or mechanisms) of rice to BPH and will in combination with molecular approaches allow identification and development of new control strategies

    A comparison of the Charlson comorbidity index derived from medical records and claims data from patients undergoing lung cancer surgery in Korea: a population-based investigation

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Calculating the Charlson comorbidity index (CCI) from medical records is a time-consuming and expensive process. The objectives of this study are to 1) measure agreement between medical record and claims data for CCI in lung cancer patients and 2) predict health outcomes of lung cancer patients based on CCIs from both data sources.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We studied 392 patients who underwent surgery for pathologic stages I-III of lung cancer. The kappa value was used to measure the agreement between the 17 comorbidities of the CCI prevalence obtained from medical records and claims data. Multiple linear regression analyses were used to evaluate the relationships between CCI and length of stay and reimbursement cost.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Out of 17 comorbidities identified in the Charlson comorbidity index, ten had a higher prevalence, four had a lower prevalence and three had a similar prevalence in claims data to those of medical records. The kappa values calculated from the two databases ranged from 0.093 to 0.473 for nine comorbidities. In predicting length of stay and reimbursement cost after surgical resection for lung cancer patients, the CCI scores derived from both the medical records and claims data were not statistically significant.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Poor agreement between medical record data and claims data may result from different motivations for collecting data. Further studies are needed to determine an appropriate method for predicting health outcomes based on these data sources.</p

    The economic burden of musculoskeletal disease in Korea: A cross sectional study

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Musculoskeletal diseases are becoming increasingly important due to population aging. However, studies on the economic burden of musculoskeletal disease in Korea are scarce. Therefore, we conducted a population-based study to measure the economic burden of musculoskeletal disease in Korea using nationally representative data.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>This study used a variety of data sources such as national health insurance statistics, the Korea Health Panel study and cause of death reports generated by the Korea National Statistical Office to estimate the economic burden of musculoskeletal disease. The total cost of musculoskeletal disease was estimated as the sum of direct medical care costs, direct non-medical care costs, and indirect costs. Direct medical care costs are composed of the costs paid by the insurer and patients, over the counter drugs costs, and other costs such as medical equipment costs. Direct non-medical costs are composed of transportation and caregiver costs. Indirect costs are the sum of the costs associated with premature death and the costs due to productivity loss. Age, sex, and disease specific costs were estimated.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Among the musculoskeletal diseases, the highest costs are associated with other dorsopathies, followed by disc disorder and arthrosis. The direct medical and direct non-medical costs of all musculoskeletal diseases were 4.18billionand4.18 billion and 338 million in 2008, respectively. Among the indirect costs, those due to productivity loss were 2.28billionandcostsduetoprematuredeathwere2.28 billion and costs due to premature death were 79 million. The proportions of the total costs incurred by male and female patients were 33.8% and 66.2%, respectively, and the cost due to the female adult aged 20-64 years old was highest. The total economic cost of musculoskeletal disease was $6.89 billion, which represents 0.7% of the Korean gross domestic product.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The economic burden of musculoskeletal disease in Korea is substantial. As the Korean population continues to age, the economic burden of musculoskeletal disease will continue to increase. Policy measures aimed at controlling the cost of musculoskeletal disease are therefore required.</p

    Performance of CMS muon reconstruction in pp collision events at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV

    The performance of muon reconstruction, identification, and triggering in CMS has been studied using 40 inverse picobarns of data collected in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV at the LHC in 2010. A few benchmark sets of selection criteria covering a wide range of physics analysis needs have been examined. For all considered selections, the efficiency to reconstruct and identify a muon with a transverse momentum pT larger than a few GeV is above 95% over the whole region of pseudorapidity covered by the CMS muon system, abs(eta) < 2.4, while the probability to misidentify a hadron as a muon is well below 1%. The efficiency to trigger on single muons with pT above a few GeV is higher than 90% over the full eta range, and typically substantially better. The overall momentum scale is measured to a precision of 0.2% with muons from Z decays. The transverse momentum resolution varies from 1% to 6% depending on pseudorapidity for muons with pT below 100 GeV and, using cosmic rays, it is shown to be better than 10% in the central region up to pT = 1 TeV. Observed distributions of all quantities are well reproduced by the Monte Carlo simulation.Comment: Replaced with published version. Added journal reference and DO
