Sharing Feedback, Sharing Screens: Videoconferencing as a Tool for Stakeholder-Driven Web Design
Videoconferencing is a low-cost, high-reward tool for engaging stakeholders in participatory design and usability testing for online Extension products. This article details how we used the videoconference program BlueJeans to facilitate the redesign of the Great Lakes Aquatic Nonindigenous Species Information System database and highlights the benefits of this technique along with the methods we used for stakeholder interviews in the project

Ion-Acoustic Solitons in Bi-Ion Dusty Plasma
The propagation of ion-acoustic solitons in a warm dusty plasma containing
two ion species is investigated theoretically. Using an approach based on the
Korteveg-de-Vries equation, it is shown that the critical value of the negative
ion density that separates the domains of existence of compressi- on and
rarefaction solitons depends continuously on the dust density. A modified
Korteveg-de Vries equation for the critical density is derived in the higher
order of the expansion in the small parameter. It is found that the nonlinear
coefficient of this equation is positive for any values of the dust density and
the masses of positive and negative ions. For the case where the negative ion
density is close to its critical value, a soliton solution is found that takes
into account both the quadratic and cubic nonlinearities. The propagation of a
solitary wave of arbitrary amplitude is investigated by the quasi-potential
method. It is shown that the range of the dust densities around the critical
value within which solitary waves with positive and negative potentials can
exist simultaneously is relatively wide.Comment: 17 pages, 5 figure
A traffic light grading system of hip dysplasia to predict the success of arthroscopic hip surgery
Background: The role of hip arthroscopy in dysplasia is controversial. Purpose: Determine the 7-year joint preservation rate following hip arthroscopy in hip dysplasia and identify anatomical and intra-operative features that predict success of hip preservation with arthroscopic surgery allowing formulation of an evidence-based classification. Study Design: Cohort Study; Level of evidence: 3 Methods: Between 2008 and 2013, 111 hips with dysplastic features [acetabular index (AI) > 10° and/or centre-edge angle (CEA) <25°] having undergone an arthroscopy were identified. Clinical, radiological and operative findings and type of procedure performed were reviewed. Radiographic evaluations of the operated hip [acetabular index (AI), centre-edge angle (CEA), extrusion index] were performed. Outcome measures included whether the hip was preserved at follow-up, pre- and post-operative NAHS and HOOS scores. We calculated AI and CEA factored (AIf and CEAf respectively) by a measure of articular wear as follows: AIf = AI x (number of UCL wear zones +1) CEAf = CEA / (number of UCL zones + 1) A contour plot of the resulting probability value of failure for every combination of AIf and CEAf allowed for the determination of the zones with the lowest and highest incidence of failure to preserve the hip respectively. Results: The mean AI and CEA were 7.8° and 18.0°, respectively. At a mean follow-up of 4.4 years, 33 hips had failed requiring a hip arthroplasty. The 7- year joint survival was 68%. The mean improvement in NAHS and HOOS were 7.8 and 23 points respectively. The zone with the greatest chance of joint preservation (odds ratio: 10, p<0.001) was AIf: 0 – 15 and CEAf: 15 – 25 (Green Zone); on the contrary the zone with the greatest chance of failure (odds ratio: 10, p<0.001) was AIf: 20 – 100 and CEAf : 0 – 10 (Red Zone). Conclusion: Overall, the 7- year hip survival in hip dysplasia appears inferior compared to reports of Femoro-Acetabular Impingement cases. Hip arthroscopy is associated with excellent chance of hip preservation in mild (Green Zone) dysplasia (AI< 15° & CEA: 15 – 25°) and no (or little) articular wear. Hip arthroscopy should not be performed in cases with severe (Red Zone) dysplasia (AI> 20° & CEA< 10°)
Constrained simulations of the Local Group: on the radial distribution of substructures
We examine the properties of satellites found in high resolution simulations
of the local group. We use constrained simulations designed to reproduce the
main dynamical features that characterize the local neighborhood, i.e. within
tens of Mpc around the Local Group (LG). Specifically, a LG-like object is
found located within the 'correct' dynamical environment and consisting of
three main objects which are associated with the Milky Way, M31 and M33. By
running two simulations of this LG from identical initial conditions - one with
and one without baryons modeled hydrodynamically - we can quantify the effect
of gas physics on the population of subhaloes in an environment similar
to our own. We find that above a certain mass cut, subhaloes in hydrodynamic simulations are more
radially concentrated than those in simulations with out gas. This is caused by
the collapse of baryons into stars that typically sit in the central regions of
subhaloes, making them denser. The increased central density of such a subhalo,
results in less mass loss due to tidal stripping than the same subhalo
simulated with only dark matter. The increased mass in hydrodynamic subhaloes
with respect to dark matter ones, causes dynamical friction to be more
effective, dragging the subhalo towards the centre of the host. This results in
these subhaloes being effectively more radially concentrated then their dark

Characteristics of alpha projectile fragments emission in interaction of nuclei with emulsion
The properties of the relativistic alpha fragments produced in interactions
of 84^Kr at around 1 A GeV in nuclear emulsion are investigated. The
experimental results are compared with the similar results obtained from
various projectiles with emulsion interactions at different energies. The
total, partial nuclear cross-sections and production rates of alpha
fragmentation channels in relativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions and their
dependence on the mass number and initial energy of the incident projectile
nucleus are investigated. The yields of multiple alpha fragments emitted from
the interactions of projectile nuclei with the nuclei of light, medium and
heavy target groups of emulsion-detector are discussed and they indicate that
the projectile-breakup mechanism seems to be free from the target mass number.
It is found that the multiplicity distributions of alpha fragments are well
described by the Koba-Nielsen-Olesen (KNO) scaling presentation. The mean
multiplicities of the freshly produced newly created charged secondary
particles, normally known as shower and secondary particles associated with
target in the events where the emission of alpha fragments were accompanied by
heavy projectile fragments having Z value larger than 4 seem to be constant as
the alpha fragments multiplicity increases, and exhibit a behavior independent

Should physical activity recommendations be ethnicity-specific? Evidence from a cross-sectional study of south Asian and European men
Background
Expert bodies and health organisations recommend that adults undertake at least 150 min.week−1 of moderate-intensity physical activity (MPA). However, the underpinning data largely emanate from studies of populations of European descent. It is unclear whether this level of activity is appropriate for other ethnic groups, particularly South Asians, who have increased cardio-metabolic disease risk compared to Europeans. The aim of this study was to explore the level of MPA required in South Asians to confer a similar cardio-metabolic risk profile to that observed in Europeans undertaking the currently recommended MPA level of 150 min.week−1.<p></p>
Methods
Seventy-five South Asian and 83 European men, aged 40–70, without cardiovascular disease or diabetes had fasted blood taken, blood pressure measured, physical activity assessed objectively (using accelerometry), and anthropometric measures made. Factor analysis was used to summarise measured risk biomarkers into underlying latent ‘factors’ for glycaemia, insulin resistance, lipid metabolism, blood pressure, and overall cardio-metabolic risk. Age-adjusted regression models were used to determine the equivalent level of MPA (in bouts of ≥10 minutes) in South Asians needed to elicit the same value in each factor as Europeans undertaking 150 min.week−1 MPA.<p></p>
Findings
For all factors, except blood pressure, equivalent MPA values in South Asians were significantly higher than 150 min.week−1; the equivalent MPA value for the overall cardio-metabolic risk factor was 266 (95% CI 185-347) min.week−1.<p></p>
Conclusions
South Asian men may need to undertake greater levels of MPA than Europeans to exhibit a similar cardio-metabolic risk profile, suggesting that a conceptual case can be made for ethnicity-specific physical activity guidance. Further study is needed to extend these findings to women and to replicate them prospectively in a larger cohort.<p></p>
Low-Voltage Continuous Electrospinning Patterning
Electrospinning is a versatile technique for the construction of microfibrous and nanofibrous structures with considerable potential in applications ranging from textile manufacturing to tissue engineering scaffolds. In the simplest form, electrospinning uses a high voltage of tens of thousands volts to draw out ultrafine polymer fibers over a large distance. However, the high voltage limits the flexible combination of material selection, deposition substrate, and control of patterns. Prior studies show that by performing electrospinning with a well-defined "near-field" condition, the operation voltage can be decreased to the kilovolt range, and further enable more precise patterning of fibril structures on a planar surface. In this work, by using solution dependent "initiators", we demonstrate a further lowering of voltage with an ultralow voltage continuous electrospinning patterning (LEP) technique, which reduces the applied voltage threshold to as low as 50 V, simultaneously permitting direct fiber patterning. The versatility of LEP is shown using a wide range of combination of polymer and solvent systems for thermoplastics and biopolymers. Novel functionalities are also incorporated when a low voltage mode is used in place of a high voltage mode, such as direct printing of living bacteria; the construction of suspended single fibers and membrane networks. Lower cardiorespiratory fitness contributes to increased insulin resistance and fasting glycaemia in middle-aged South Asian compared with European men living in the UK
AIMS/HYPOTHESIS: This study aimed to determine the extent to which increased insulin resistance and fasting glycaemia in South Asian men, compared with white European men, living in the UK, was due to lower cardiorespiratory fitness (maximal oxygen uptake [[Formula: see text]]) and physical activity. METHODS: One hundred South Asian and 100 age- and BMI-matched European men without diagnosed diabetes, aged 40–70 years, had fasted blood taken for measurement of glucose concentration, HOMA-estimated insulin resistance (HOMA(IR)), plus other risk factors, and underwent assessment of physical activity (using accelerometry), [Formula: see text], body size and composition, and demographic and other lifestyle factors. For 13 South Asian and one European man, HbA(1c) levels were >6.5% (>48 mmol/mol), indicating potential undiagnosed diabetes; these men were excluded from the analyses. Linear regression models were used to determine the extent to which body size and composition, fitness and physical activity variables explained differences in HOMA(IR) and fasting glucose between South Asian and European men. RESULTS: HOMA(IR) and fasting glucose were 67% (p < 0.001) and 3% (p < 0.018) higher, respectively, in South Asians than Europeans. Lower [Formula: see text], lower physical activity and greater total adiposity in South Asians individually explained 68% (95% CI 45%, 91%), 29% (11%, 46%) and 52% (30%, 80%), respectively, and together explained 83% (50%, 119%) (all p < 0.001) of the ethnic difference in HOMA(IR). Lower [Formula: see text] and greater total adiposity, respectively, explained 61% (9%, 111%) and 39% (9%, 76%) (combined effect 63% [8%, 115%]; all p < 0.05) of the ethnic difference in fasting glucose. CONCLUSIONS/INTERPRETATION: Lower cardiorespiratory fitness is a key factor associated with the excess insulin resistance and fasting glycaemia in middle-aged South Asian, compared with European, men living in the UK.
