actividades (ABB) e a correspondente versão temporal (Time-Driven ABB). Estas
valor ganho (EVM).The current situation of high commercial competition, poses many problems for
organizations that make software its Core Business, in particular, control costs,
software quality, communication between organizations and customers,
productivity control and risk management.
Over time, were developed several approaches to the management of projects
and, more recently, to software project management, which in turn, triggered
many methodological proposals for software development, specifically for
managing the software life cycle (Waterfall, Incremental, Evolutionary, etc.), the
most current called agile methodologies (XP, Scrum, Crystal, etc.).
However, the traditional methods, and even the most modern, failed responding
to the main problems of software project management. These problems are not
exclusive from this area, because all areas of industry, with greater or lesser
intensity, record the existence of these same problems, for which solutions were
developed, with good results, including quality function deployment (QFD),
activity-based costing (ABC) and its latest developments, time-driven activitybased
costing (Time-Driven ABC), activity-based budgeting (ABB) and the
corresponding time-driven version (Time-Driven ABB). These are options that are
still taking the first steps in software industry, where is very little work on its
application, in an integrated way, to software project management.
The main objective of this dissertation is to propose a Software Project
Management Framework, which seeks to respond to the problems that concern
organizations dedicated to software production, by application of QFD,
ABC/Time-Driven ABC and ABB/Time-Driven ABB, integrated through Value
Engineering (EV) or models of Linear Programming (LP) - functioning as
framework aggregation elements; for the control and monitoring of quality and
costs is proposed the usage of earned value management (EVM)
Uma nova ordem jurídica internacional? Novas do sistema de fontes. Contributos do direito internacional do ambiente

The impact of unconventional monetary policies on lending rates: an evidence of the european central bank's large scale asset purchases
C51, C52, C54, E52, E58Over the last few years, the largest central banks used different approaches due to financial and
debt sovereign crises. The present dissertation introduces a review of unconventional monetary
policies (Quantitative Easing and Credit Easing) and assesses the main transmission
mechanisms of unconventional monetary policies and the conditions under which they may, or
may not, impact the economic agents through the bank funding channel. Furthermore, this
dissertation evaluates the impact of the European Central Bank’s (ECB) unconventional
monetary policies on the lending rates. The statistical distribution analysis is based on the credit
to non-financial corporations and for house purchases. The analysis is subsequently extended
to a Vector Auto-Regressive (VAR) model, where the main goals are to analyse the Impulse
Response Functions (IRF) of the Large Scale Asset Purchases (LSAP) and the fixed interest
rate for the Main Refinancing Operations (MRO) on the lending rates for non-financial
corporations and house purchases and study the causality between these variables and the
decrease on the lending rates. The results show that (i) changes on the ECB’s LSAP Granger
causes changes on both lending rates as well as the changes on the policy rate, (ii) these
variables have significant effects from the IRF and (iii) the Bayesian Vector AutoRegression
(BVAR) approach confirm the standard models.
Posteriormente, a análise é
Development of nanocarriers for Alzheimer’s disease treatment
Dissertação de mestrado em Biofísica e BionanossistemasPlaying a central role in all the body’s functions, the brain is perhaps the best protected organ
in the organism. Although this is a huge advantage before all potential pathogens and harmful
molecules that could put its integrity at risk, it is also a very difficult organ to target therapeutically.
Being highly selective to all molecules, the blood brain barrier is the primary and most difficult barrier
to overcome when one aims to deliver a specific molecule to the brain.
While it is well protected, the brain is not immune to disease, and some of the molecules
involved in the most threatening disorders, like amyloid-β and TAU in Alzheimer’s disease, and alpha synuclein in Parkinson’s disease, are thought to be produced in the brain itself. Moreover, these
diseases have another hallmark in common, which is the accumulation of reactive oxygen species in
the brain. This happens because, being a highly energy demanding organ, the brain is the most
metabolically active organ in the human body.
In order to overcome these two major debilitating hallmarks, a dual therapy is being developed
by our group. By encapsulating siRNA against TAU protein into exosome-like liposomes we aim to
reduce its expression, diminishing its harmful effects due to excessive accumulation in neurons, in
Alzheimer’s disease. Furthermore, the encapsulation of a molecule with antioxidant properties, such
as curcumin, that reduces the accumulation of amyloid-β, another important hallmark in this disease,
would most likely have considerably interesting results in the attempt to slow disease progression.
For the encapsulation of these molecules, a liposome carrier, with similar constitution and
properties of the exosomes, was chosen. Along with its low cytotoxicity verified in two cell lines, mouse
L929 fibroblasts and human neuroblastoma SH-SY5Y cells, this carrier has features compatible with
the uptake across the blood brain barrier and therefore could directly influence disease progression.
It was also found that curcumin-loaded liposomes had greater neuroprotective effects than free
curcumin after induction of oxidative stress.
Development of a Step Down DC-DC Converter for Power Grid Energy Harvesting
This work contains an analysis of multiple topologies of DC-DC voltage buck con verters. The main goal of this Thesis is to study and design a functioning Step Down
converter for capacitive coupling devices used for energy harvesting from the power AC
grid.
In order to achieve this goal, multiple topologies and circuits of this type of converter
are studied and analysed, so that the requirements for the intended application are met.
Since the input is obtained from the AC power grid and the output is connected to a
supercapacitor, this results in a large input voltage (over 150V) and a low output voltage
(between 1V to 3V), therefore the converter requires a step down voltage conversion ratio
of around 130.
The DC-DC converter should also have a large input impedance (around 50Mohm)
to maximize the energy transferred from the power grid. This mode of operation is
not common for regular inductance based DC-DC converters, making this a challenging
problem.
Moreover, since the amount of energy available from the capacitive coupling is very
small, it is also necessary to develop a controller circuit that is capable of created a clock
with a very low duty cycle while dissipating less than 50uW.Este trabalho visa analisar várias tipologias de conversores de tensão DC-DC deno minados conversores Buck. O principal objectivo desta Tese é estudar e projectar um
What’s the story here? The effect of volatility on university leader sensemaking of undocumented student access
This paper examines the effects of volatility on sensemaking. While multiple studies have explored sensemaking in crisis situations, none have explicitly investigated the impact of volatility on organizational sensemaking. Interviews with 55 top leaders in U.S. Catholic universities reveal the effects of volatility on leader sensemaking of undocumented student access to their institutions. Under conditions of high volatility, leaders experienced a strong temptation to restrict communication, which is precisely the wrong thing to do since it reduces requisite variety.
With less requisite variety, people miss more cues, which can lead to constrained sensemaking and premature simplification. Based on these findings, we can better understand the impact of volatility on organizational sensemaking and resulting consequences as sensemakers engage volatile issues.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Three essays on modeling energy prices with time-varying volatility and jumps
This thesis addresses the modeling of energy prices with time-varying volatility and jumps in three separate and self-contained papers:
A. Modeling energy futures volatility through stochastic volatility processes with Markov chain Monte Carlo
This paper studies the volatility dynamics of futures contracts on crude oil, natural gas and electricity. To accomplish this purpose, an appropriate Bayesian model
comparison exercise between seven stochastic volatility (SV) models and their counterpart GARCH models is performed, with both classes of time-varying volatility
processes being estimated through a Markov chain Monte Carlo technique. A comparison exercise for hedging purposes is also considered by computing the extreme risk measures (using the Conditional Value-at-Risk) of simulated returns from the SV model with the best performance - i.e., the SV model with a t-distribution - and the standard GARCH(1,1) model for the hedging of crude oil, natural gas and electricity positions. Overall, we find that: (i) volatility plays an important role in energy futures markets; (ii) SV models generally outperform their GARCH-family
counterparts; (iii) a model with t-distributed innovations generally improves the fitting performance of both classes of time-varying volatility models; (iv) the maturity
of futures contracts matters; and (v) the correct specification for the stochastic behavior of futures prices impacts the extreme market risk measures of hedged and unhedged positions.
B. How does electrification under energy transition impact the portfolio management of energy firms?
This paper presents a novel approach for structuring dependence between electricity and natural gas prices in the context of energy transition: a copula of meanreverting and jump-diffusion processes. Based on historical day-ahead prices of the Nord Pool electricity market and the Henry Hub natural gas market, a stochastic model is estimated via the maximum likelihood approach and considering the dependency structure between the innovations of these two-dimensional returns. Given the role of natural gas in the global policy for energy transition, different copula functions are fit to electricity and natural gas returns. Overall, we find that: (i) using an out-of-sample forecasting exercise, we show that it is important to consider both mean-reversion and jumps; (ii) modeling correlation between the returns of electricity and natural gas prices, assuring nonlinear dependencies are satisfied, leads us to the adoption of Gumbel and Student-t copulas; and (iii) without government incentive schemes in renewable electricity projects, the usual maximization of the risk-return trade-off tends to avoid a high exposure to electricity assets.
C. Modeling commodity prices under alternative jump processes and fat tails dynamics The recent fluctuations in commodity prices affected significantly Oil Gas (O&G) companies’ returns. However, integrated O&G companies are not only exposed to the downturn of oil prices since a high level of integration allows these firms to obtain non-perfectly positive correlated portfolio. This paper aims to test several different stochastic processes to model the main strategic commodities in integrated O&G companies: brent, natural gas, jet fuel and diesel. The competing univariate models include the log-normal and double exponential jump-diffusion model, the Variance-Gamma process and the geometric Brownian motion with nonlinear GARCH volatility. Given the effect of correlation between these assets, we also estimate multivariate models, such as the Dynamic Conditional Correlation (DCC) GARCH, DCC-GJR-GARCH and the DCC-EGARCH models. Overall, we find that: (i) the asymmetric conditional heteroskedasticity model substantially improves the performance of the univariate jump-diffusion models; and (ii) the multivariate approaches are the best models for our strategic energy commodities, in particular the DCC-GJR-GARCH model
