    The measurement of isotopic ratios provides a privileged insight both into nucleosynthesis and into the mechanisms operating in stellar envelopes, such as gravitational settling. In this article, we give a few examples of how isotopic ratios can be determined from high-resolution, high-quality stellar spectra. We consider examples of the lightest elements, H and He, for which the isotopic shifts are very large and easily measurable, and examples of heavier elements for which the determination of isotopic ratios is more difficult. The presence of 6Li in the stellar atmospheres causes a subtle extra depression in the red wing of the 7Li 670.7 nm doublet which can only be detected in spectra of the highest quality. But even with the best spectra, the derived 6^6Li abundance can only be as good as the synthetic spectra used for their interpretation. It is now known that 3D non-LTE modelling of the lithium spectral line profiles is necessary to account properly for the intrinsic line asymmetry, which is produced by convective flows in the atmospheres of cool stars, and can mimic the presence of 6Li.     Corsican pine (Pinus laricio Poiret) stand management: Medium and long lasting effects of thinning on biomass growth

    With the aim of acquiring better comprehension of the ecological and productive aspects of the management of pine forests, we monitored logging damage and evaluated the effects of thinning on stand growth 20 years after the treatment in a Pinus laricio Poiret stand in central Italy. The objectives of the present study were to estimate the injury levels to the remaining trees after thinning; to assess logging damage in the long-term by monitoring residual trees at the end of thinning; to evaluate the effect of damage on the radial growth of trees; to assess the stand dynamics in relation to injury levels and the treatment applied in a twenty-year range; to understand a possible treatment return time; and to evaluate the existence of the "thinning shock". The results were that 20 years after treatment, the stand dynamics showed a complete recovery; logging damage did not affect the radial growth of P. laricio over time; a second treatment seem to be sustainable starting from the fifteenth year after the previous treatment; and the thinning shock can be clearly evaluated in the first six to seven years after the treatment

    Abstract Myasthenia gravis (MG) is an autoimmune neuromuscular disease, characterised by muscle weakness and fatigability of the voluntary muscles, it affects young women in the second and third decade of life. We report a case of 30 years old multigravida woman with myasthenia gravis submitted to third iterative caesarean section with no adverse neonatal and maternal outcome. The course myathenia is highly variable and unpredictable during gestation and can change in subsequent pregnancies. Delivery specially, through caesarean section is very stressful and may cause severe myasthenic crisis. Although pregnancy and delivery represent particular events, that require more attention in these patients, they are not associated, in most cases, with higher risks of complications compared to normal pregnancy, delivery and postpartum period. According our experiences, in the management of myasthenic pregnant woman is necessary cooperation in a multidisciplinary team between obstetricians, neurologist, anaesthetist, and neonatologist for ensure an optimum outcome

    Consistency of cruise data of the CARINA database in the Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean

    Initially a North Atlantic project, the CARINA carbon synthesis was extended to include the Southern Ocean. Carbon and relevant hydrographic and geochemical ancillary data from cruises all across the Arctic Mediterranean Seas, Atlantic and Southern Ocean were released to the public and merged into a new database as part of the CARINA synthesis effort. Of a total of 188 cruises, 37 cruises are part of the Southern Ocean, including 11 from the Atlantic sector. The variables from all Southern Ocean cruises, including dissolved inorganic carbon (TCO2), total alkalinity, oxygen, nitrate, phosphate and silicate, were examined for cruise-to-cruise consistency in one collective effort. Seawater pH and chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) are also part of the database, but the pH quality control (QC) is described in another Earth System Science Data publication, while the complexity of the Southern Ocean physics and biogeochemistry prevented a proper QC analysis of the CFCs. The area-specific procedures of quality control, including crossover analysis between stations and inversion analysis of all crossover data (i.e. secondary QC), are briefly described here for the Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean. Data from an existing, quality controlled database (GLODAP) were used as a reference for our computations – however, the reference data were included into the analysis without applying the recommended GLODAP adjustments so the corrections could be independently verified. The outcome of this effort is an internally consistent, high-quality carbon data set for all cruises, including the reference cruises. The suggested corrections by the inversion analysis were allowed to vary within a fixed envelope, thus accounting for natural variability. The percentage of cruises adjusted ranged from 31% (for nitrate) to 54% (for phosphate) depending on the variable

    Non-invasive computer navigation can quantify the pivot shift maneuver with good to excellent reliability in healthy volunteers

    Purpose: The aim of this study was to determine the inter- and intra-observer reliability of knee laxity assessment using a non-invasive navigation system in a population of healthy young athletes. It was hypothesized that knee laxity parameters recorded using non-invasive computer navigation would demonstrate good inter- and intra- observer reliability. Methods: Healthy volunteers aged between 18 to 30 years were recruited to the study. Static and dynamic knee laxity parameters including anterior tibial translation and tibial rotation during the pivot shift test were recorded on awake patients using non-invasive computer navigation by two independent observers: at the first visit each athlete was evaluated by the consultant and resident surgeons independently; 6 weeks after the first visit all the participants were re-tested only by the resident surgeon. Inter- and intra-observer reliability was calculated and then interpreted according to Cicchetti’s criteria. Results: One hundred healthy volunteers were recruited to the study, of these 38 were women (38%), and the average age was 25.5 ± 2.4 years. According to Cicchetti’s criteria the intra- and inter-observer reliability for static measurements were fair for anterior tibial translation (0.572 and 0.529, respectively) and excellent for total passive tibial rotation (0.859 and 0.883, respectively). For the dynamic measurements of translation and rotation during the pivot shift maneuver both measurements demonstrated good to excellent reliability with intra and inter observer reliability ranging from 0.684 to 0.936. Conclusion: Non-invasive navigation for the assessment of knee laxity is associated with fair to excellent inter- and intra-observer reliability in a population of healthy volunteers

    A primer on machine learning techniques for genomic applications

    High throughput sequencing technologies have enabled the study of complex biological aspects at single nucleotide resolution, opening the big data era. The analysis of large volumes of heterogeneous “omic” data, however, requires novel and efficient computational algorithms based on the paradigm of Artificial Intelligence. In the present review, we introduce and describe the most common machine learning methodologies, and lately deep learning, applied to a variety of genomics tasks, trying to emphasize capabilities, strengths and limitations through a simple and intuitive language. We highlight the power of the machine learning approach in handling big data by means of a real life example, and underline how described methods could be relevant in all cases in which large amounts of multimodal genomic data are available

    The progressive loss of dopaminergic neurons in the nigro-striatal system is a major trait of Parkinson's disease (PD), manifesting clinically as motor and non-motor symptoms. Mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress are alleged pathogenic mechanisms underlying aggregation of misfolded α-synuclein that in turn triggers dopaminergic neurotoxicity. Peripheral processes, including inflammation, may precede and contribute to neurodegeneration. Whether mitochondrial dyshomeostasis in the central nervous system and systemic inflammation are linked to one another in PD is presently unclear. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are delivery systems through which cells can communicate or unload noxious materials. EV trafficking also participates in mitochondrial quality control (MQC) by generating mitochondrial-derived vesicles to dispose damaged organelles. Disruption of MQC coupled with abnormal EV secretion may play a role in the pathogenesis of PD. Furthermore, due to its bacterial ancestry, circulating mitochondrial DNA can elicit an inflammatory response. Therefore, purification and characterisation of molecules packaged in, and secreted through, small EVs (sEVs)/exosomes in body fluids may provide meaningful insights into the association between mitochondrial dysfunction and systemic inflammation in PD.
