Perceptions of learning support or advice
The question of how best to frame student support is explored in this piece of research. The project held focus groups of users and non-users of the Effective Learning Advice Service (ELAS) at Brunel University. It sought to determine whether students distinguished between the labels of 'advice' or 'support', and how this effected their perceptions and expectations of a learning advice service

GREAT3 results I: systematic errors in shear estimation and the impact of real galaxy morphology
We present first results from the third GRavitational lEnsing Accuracy
Testing (GREAT3) challenge, the third in a sequence of challenges for testing
methods of inferring weak gravitational lensing shear distortions from
simulated galaxy images. GREAT3 was divided into experiments to test three
specific questions, and included simulated space- and ground-based data with
constant or cosmologically-varying shear fields. The simplest (control)
experiment included parametric galaxies with a realistic distribution of
signal-to-noise, size, and ellipticity, and a complex point spread function
(PSF). The other experiments tested the additional impact of realistic galaxy
morphology, multiple exposure imaging, and the uncertainty about a
spatially-varying PSF; the last two questions will be explored in Paper II. The
24 participating teams competed to estimate lensing shears to within systematic
error tolerances for upcoming Stage-IV dark energy surveys, making 1525
submissions overall. GREAT3 saw considerable variety and innovation in the
types of methods applied. Several teams now meet or exceed the targets in many
of the tests conducted (to within the statistical errors). We conclude that the
presence of realistic galaxy morphology in simulations changes shear
calibration biases by per cent for a wide range of methods. Other
effects such as truncation biases due to finite galaxy postage stamps, and the
impact of galaxy type as measured by the S\'{e}rsic index, are quantified for
the first time. Our results generalize previous studies regarding sensitivities
to galaxy size and signal-to-noise, and to PSF properties such as seeing and
defocus. Almost all methods' results support the simple model in which additive

Detailed SZ study of 19 LoCuSS galaxy clusters: masses and temperatures out to the virial radius
We present 16-GHz AMI SZ observations of 19 clusters with L_X >7x10^37 W
(h50=1) selected from the LoCuS survey (0.142<z<0.295) and of A1758b, in the
FoV of A1758a. We detect 17 clusters with 5-23sigma peak surface brightnesses.
Cluster parameters are obtained using a Bayesian cluster analysis. We fit
isothermal beta-models to our data and assume the clusters are virialized (with
all the kinetic energy in gas internal energy). Our gas temperature, T_AMI, is
derived from AMI SZ data, not from X-ray spectroscopy. Cluster parameters
internal to r500 are derived assuming HSE. We find: (i) Different gNFW
parameterizations yield significantly different parameter degeneracies. (ii)
For h70 = 1, we find the virial radius r200 to be typically 1.6+/-0.1 Mpc and
the total mass M_T(r200) typically to be 2.0-2.5xM_T(r500).(iii) Where we have
found M_T X-ray (X) and weak-lensing (WL) values in the literature, there is
good agreement between WL and AMI estimates (with M_{T,AMI}/M_{T,WL}
=1.2^{+0.2}_{-0.3} and =1.0+/-0.1 for r500 and r200, respectively). In
comparison, most Suzaku/Chandra estimates are higher than for AMI (with
M_{T,X}/M_{T,AMI}=1.7+/-0.2 within r500), particularly for the stronger
mergers.(iv) Comparison of T_AMI to T_X sheds light on high X-ray masses: even
at large r, T_X can substantially exceed T_AMI in mergers. The use of these
higher T_X values will give higher X-ray masses. We stress that large-r T_SZ
and T_X data are scarce and must be increased. (v) Despite the paucity of data,
there is an indication of a relation between merger activity and SZ
ellipticity. (vi) At small radius (but away from any cooling flow) the SZ
signal (and T_AMI) is less sensitive to ICM disturbance than the X-ray signal
(and T_X) and, even at high r, mergers affect n^2-weighted X-ray data more than
n-weighted SZ, implying significant shocking or clumping or both occur even in

Magnetic structures and turbulence in SN 1006 revealed with imaging X-ray polarimetry
Young supernova remnants (SNRs) strongly modify surrounding magnetic fields,
which in turn play an essential role in accelerating cosmic rays (CRs). X-ray
polarization measurements probe magnetic field morphology and turbulence at the
immediate acceleration site. We report the X-ray polarization distribution in
the northeastern shell of SN1006 from a 1 Ms observation with the Imaging X-ray
Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE). We found an average polarization degree of
and an average polarization angle of
(measured on the plane of the sky from north to east). The X-ray polarization
angle distribution reveals that the magnetic fields immediately behind the
shock in the northeastern shell of SN 1006 are nearly parallel to the shock
normal or radially distributed, similar to that in the radio observations, and
consistent with the quasi-parallel CR acceleration scenario. The X-ray emission
is marginally more polarized than that in the radio band. The X-ray
polarization degree of SN 1006 is much larger than that in Cas A and Tycho,
together with the relatively tenuous and smooth ambient medium of the remnant,
favoring that CR-induced instabilities set the turbulence in SN 1006 and CR

The large area detector onboard the eXTP mission
The Large Area Detector (LAD) is the high-throughput, spectral-timing instrument onboard the eXTP mission, a flagship
mission of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the China National Space Administration, with a large European
participation coordinated by Italy and Spain. The eXTP mission is currently performing its phase B study, with a target
launch at the end-2027. The eXTP scientific payload includes four instruments (SFA, PFA, LAD and WFM) offering
unprecedented simultaneous wide-band X-ray timing and polarimetry sensitivity. The LAD instrument is based on the
design originally proposed for the LOFT mission. It envisages a deployed 3.2 m2 effective area in the 2-30 keV energy
range, achieved through the technology of the large-area Silicon Drift Detectors - offering a spectral resolution of up to
200 eV FWHM at 6 keV - and of capillary plate collimators - limiting the field of view to about 1 degree. In this paper
we will provide an overview of the LAD instrument design, its current status of development and anticipated
performance
Serum Albumin Is Inversely Associated With Portal Vein Thrombosis in Cirrhosis
We analyzed whether serum albumin is independently associated with portal vein thrombosis (PVT) in liver cirrhosis (LC) and if a biologic plausibility exists. This study was divided into three parts. In part 1 (retrospective analysis), 753 consecutive patients with LC with ultrasound-detected PVT were retrospectively analyzed. In part 2, 112 patients with LC and 56 matched controls were entered in the cross-sectional study. In part 3, 5 patients with cirrhosis were entered in the in vivo study and 4 healthy subjects (HSs) were entered in the in vitro study to explore if albumin may affect platelet activation by modulating oxidative stress. In the 753 patients with LC, the prevalence of PVT was 16.7%; logistic analysis showed that only age (odds ratio [OR], 1.024; P = 0.012) and serum albumin (OR, -0.422; P = 0.0001) significantly predicted patients with PVT. Analyzing the 112 patients with LC and controls, soluble clusters of differentiation (CD)40-ligand (P = 0.0238), soluble Nox2-derived peptide (sNox2-dp; P < 0.0001), and urinary excretion of isoprostanes (P = 0.0078) were higher in patients with LC. In LC, albumin was correlated with sCD4OL (Spearman's rank correlation coefficient [r(s)], -0.33; P < 0.001), sNox2-dp (r(s), -0.57; P < 0.0001), and urinary excretion of isoprostanes (r(s), -0.48; P < 0.0001) levels. The in vivo study showed a progressive decrease in platelet aggregation, sNox2-dp, and urinary 8-iso prostaglandin F2 alpha-III formation 2 hours and 3 days after albumin infusion. Finally, platelet aggregation, sNox2-dp, and isoprostane formation significantly decreased in platelets from HSs incubated with scalar concentrations of albumin. Conclusion: Low serum albumin in LC is associated with PVT, suggesting that albumin could be a modulator of the hemostatic system through interference with mechanisms regulating platelet activation
COVID-19 vaccine failure
COVID-19 affects the population unequally with a higher impact on aged and
immunosuppressed people. Hence, we assessed the effect of SARS-CoV-2 vaccination
in immune compromised patients (older adults and oncohematologic patients),
compared with healthy counterparts. While the acquired humoral and cellular memory
did not predict subsequent infection 18 months after full immunization, spectral and
computational cytometry revealed several subsets within the CD8+ T-cells, B-cells, NK
cells, monocytes and CD45RA+
CCR7- TγΎ cells differentially expressed in further
infected and non-infected individuals not just following immunization, but also prior to
that. Of note, up to 7 subsets were found within the CD45RA+
CCR7-
TγΎ population with
some of them being expanded and other decreased in subsequently infected individuals.
Moreover, some of these subsets also predicted COVID-induced hospitalization in
oncohematologic patients. Therefore, we hereby have identified several cellular subsets
that, even before vaccination, strongly related to COVID-19 vulnerability as opposed to

Community prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 in England from April to November, 2020: results from the ONS Coronavirus Infection Survey
Background: Decisions about the continued need for control measures to contain the spread of severe acute respiratory
syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) rely on accurate and up-to-date information about the number of people
testing positive for SARS-CoV-2 and risk factors for testing positive. Existing surveillance systems are generally not
based on population samples and are not longitudinal in design.
Methods: Samples were collected from individuals aged 2 years and older living in private households in England that
were randomly selected from address lists and previous Office for National Statistics surveys in repeated crosssectional household surveys with additional serial sampling and longitudinal follow-up. Participants completed a
questionnaire and did nose and throat self-swabs. The percentage of individuals testing positive for SARS-CoV-2 RNA
was estimated over time by use of dynamic multilevel regression and poststratification, to account for potential
residual non-representativeness. Potential changes in risk factors for testing positive over time were also assessed.
The study is registered with the ISRCTN Registry, ISRCTN21086382.
Findings: Between April 26 and Nov 1, 2020, results were available from 1 191 170 samples from 280327 individuals; 5231
samples were positive overall, from 3923 individuals. The percentage of people testing positive for SARS-CoV-2 changed
substantially over time, with an initial decrease between April 26 and June 28, 2020, from 0·40% (95% credible interval
0·29â0·54) to 0·06% (0·04â0·07), followed by low levels during July and August, 2020, before substantial increases at
the end of August, 2020, with percentages testing positive above 1% from the end of October, 2020. Having a patient facing role and working outside your home were important risk factors for testing positive for SARS-CoV-2 at the end of
the first wave (April 26 to June 28, 2020), but not in the second wave (from the end of August to Nov 1, 2020). Age (young
adults, particularly those aged 17â24 years) was an important initial driver of increased positivity rates in the second
wave. For example, the estimated percentage of individuals testing positive was more than six times higher in those
aged 17â24 years than in those aged 70 years or older at the end of September, 2020. A substantial proportion of
infections were in individuals not reporting symptoms around their positive test (45â68%, dependent on calendar time.
Interpretation: Important risk factors for testing positive for SARS-CoV-2 varied substantially between the part of the
first wave that was captured by the study (April to June, 2020) and the first part of the second wave of increased
positivity rates (end of August to Nov 1, 2020), and a substantial proportion of infections were in individuals not
reporting symptoms, indicating that continued monitoring for SARS-CoV-2 in the community will be important for
managing the COVID-19 pandemic moving forwards
