    Irrigation deficit turns almond by-products into a valuable source of antimicrobial (poly)phenols

    [EN] Almond (Prunus dulcis (Mill.) D. A. Webb) production keeps an increasing trend worldwide, leading to augment in generation of harmful by-products that should be valorized as a source of bioactive phytochemicals with application in the development of new added-value products. The assessment of almond hulls and skins on their (poly)phenolic composition was developed upon two seasons, under five irrigation regimes, regarding total phenolics, flavonoids, and ortho-diphenols, as well as individual phenolic compounds analyzed by High Performance Liquid Chromatography with Diode-Array Detection (HPLC-DAD). As functional tests, extracts were assessed on their radical scavenging activity in vitro and reducing power, and screened on their antimicrobial activity against multidrug resistant bacterial pathogens. The phenolic profile and antioxidant activities were evaluated in blanching water as well. Naringenin-7-O-glucoside and isorhamnetin-3-O-rutinoside were the most abundant phenolics in almond hulls and skins. Influence of irrigation treatments and season on phenolic content differed among by-products; hulls being more influenced by irrigation and skins by the agro-climatic conditions. The synthesis of individual phenolics was more influenced by season than treatment. According to the chemical and biological correlations, the presence of (poly)phenols seems to be responsible for the antioxidant and antimicrobial properties revealed.     Exploring indicators of circular economy adoption framework through a hybrid decision support approach

    Circular economy (CE) focuses on a circular approach to energy and material resources, which provides economic, environmental and social benefits for manufacturing organisations. CE adoption in emerging economies facilitates in substantial economic growth through appropriate utilisation of energy and material resources across manufacturing industries. This study identifies CE indicators in the context of an emerging economy. The study further develops a framework for the adoption of CE and tests it through a hybrid Best Worst Method and Decision-Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory approach. The framework is validated through an Indian manufacturing case organisation. While Best Worst Method computes the CE related indicator weights, Decision-Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory analyses the inter-relationship among indicators. Disparate CE related indicators, e.g. strategic, managerial, informational and technological, supply chain and organisational, influence the CE adoption in an emerging economy context. The findings reveal that the strategic and managerial indicators have the strongest influence on developing other indicators. The causal digraph and relationship diagram assist the practitioners in predicting the inter-relationship of indicators in CE adoption. The study outcomes will help the practitioners, policymakers and researchers to draw a framework for adoption of circular and green practices and usage of resources sustainably

    Time to Switch to Second-line Antiretroviral Therapy in Children With Human Immunodeficiency Virus in Europe and Thailand.

    Background: Data on durability of first-line antiretroviral therapy (ART) in children with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) are limited. We assessed time to switch to second-line therapy in 16 European countries and Thailand. Methods: Children aged <18 years initiating combination ART (≥2 nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors [NRTIs] plus nonnucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor [NNRTI] or boosted protease inhibitor [PI]) were included. Switch to second-line was defined as (i) change across drug class (PI to NNRTI or vice versa) or within PI class plus change of ≥1 NRTI; (ii) change from single to dual PI; or (iii) addition of a new drug class. Cumulative incidence of switch was calculated with death and loss to follow-up as competing risks. Results: Of 3668 children included, median age at ART initiation was 6.1 (interquartile range (IQR), 1.7-10.5) years. Initial regimens were 32% PI based, 34% nevirapine (NVP) based, and 33% efavirenz based. Median duration of follow-up was 5.4 (IQR, 2.9-8.3) years. Cumulative incidence of switch at 5 years was 21% (95% confidence interval, 20%-23%), with significant regional variations. Median time to switch was 30 (IQR, 16-58) months; two-thirds of switches were related to treatment failure. In multivariable analysis, older age, severe immunosuppression and higher viral load (VL) at ART start, and NVP-based initial regimens were associated with increased risk of switch. Conclusions: One in 5 children switched to a second-line regimen by 5 years of ART, with two-thirds failure related. Los objetivos son analizar las condiciones de higiene de los espacios y recursos de los centros; coordinar las instituciones de la zona que puedan mejorar los aspectos relacionados con la salud; y establecer pautas de intervención y, sobre todo, de prevención. Los profesores reciben formación y se reúnen para proyectar la guía. Se trabaja la higiene de los niños, del educador y de los espacios y materiales; el momento de comer; y orientaciones sanitarias y de prevención ante enfermedades.     Experiencia que pretende sistematizar el uso del vídeo en el ámbito de trabajo de las cuatro Casas de Niños de la zona y en el entorno familiar de los alumnos. Los objetivos son, dominar el aspecto técnico y expresivo del vídeo, e incorporarlo al proceso de enseñanza-aprendizaje. Las actividades consisten en la formación en el manejo del vídeo, grabaciones en clase y el montaje de un vídeo de presentación de cada una de las casas, siguiendo el guión literario: grabación, minutado y montaje. En la evaluación se tiene en cuenta la iniciativa de la comunidad educativa, la calidad del montaje de los aparatos y la adecuación de la tarea a los planteamientos previos.Madrid (Comunidad Autónoma).
