    Ice-flow model emulator based on physics-informed deep learning

    Convolutional neural networks (CNN) trained from high-order ice-flow model realisations have proven to be outstanding emulators in terms of fidelity and computational performance. However, the dependence on an ensemble of realisations of an instructor model renders this strategy difficult to generalise to a variety of ice-flow regimes found in the nature. To overcome this issue, we adopt the approach of physics-informed deep learning, which fuses traditional numerical solutions by finite differences/elements and deep-learning approaches. Here, we train a CNN to minimise the energy associated with high-order ice-flow equations within the time iterations of a glacier evolution model. As a result, our emulator is a promising alternative to traditional solvers thanks to its high computational efficiency (especially on GPU), its high fidelity to the original model, its simplified training (without requiring any data), its capability to handle a variety of ice-flow regimes and memorise previous solutions, and its relatively simple implementation. Embedded into the ‘Instructed Glacier Model’ (IGM) framework, the potential of the emulator is illustrated with three applications including a large-scale high-resolution (2400x4000) forward glacier evolution model, an inverse modelling case for data assimilation, and an ice shelf

    Deep learning speeds up ice flow modelling by several orders of magnitude

    This paper introduces the Instructed Glacier Model (IGM) – a model that simulates ice dynamics, mass balance and its coupling to predict the evolution of glaciers, icefields or ice sheets. The novelty of IGM is that it models the ice flow by a Convolutional Neural Network, which is trained from data generated with hybrid SIA + SSA or Stokes ice flow models. By doing so, the most computationally demanding model component is substituted by a cheap emulator. Once trained with representative data, we demonstrate that IGM permits to model mountain glaciers up to 1000 × faster than Stokes ones on Central Processing Units (CPU) with fidelity levels above 90% in terms of ice flow solutions leading to nearly identical transient thickness evolution. Switching to the GPU often permits additional significant speed-ups, especially when emulating Stokes dynamics or/and modelling at high spatial resolution. IGM is an open-source Python code which deals with two-dimensional (2-D) gridded input and output data. Together with a companion library of trained ice flow emulators, IGM permits user-friendly, highly efficient and mechanically state-of-the-art glacier and icefields simulations

    Streaming DICOM Real-Time Video and Metadata Flows Outside The Operating Room

    International audienceWith the current advancement in the medical world, surgeons are faced with the challenge of handling many sources of medical information in more and more complex and technological Operating Rooms (ORs). Obviously, in the next generation ones, there will be an increasing number of video flows during the surgery (e.g. endoscopes, cameras, ultrasounds, etc.), which can be also displayed all over the OR in order to facilitate the task for the surgeon and to avoid any adverse events or problems related to inadequate communication in the OR. Additionally, other information needs to be shared, pre/post/during an operation, such as the history of the digital images related to the patient in the PACS and the metadata coming from medical sensors. Moreover, these medical videos captured from the OR can be either displayed on a large screen in the OR in order to provide the surgeon with more visibility, in this case via DICOM-RTV, or streamed outside the OR via a P2P solution. The latter one can serve various purposes such as for teaching medical student in real-time or for remote-expertise with a remote senior surgeons. Hence, this paper addresses the challenges of streaming DICOM-RTV video and metadata flows live from the operating room, typically during an ongoing surgery, in real-time to the outside world. A Proof of Concept is also presented in order to demonstrate the feasibility of our solution

    Large Scale Terrain Generation from Tectonic Uplift and Fluvial Erosion

    International audienceAt large scale, landscapes result from the combination of two major processes: tectonics which generate the main relief through crust uplift, and weather which accounts for erosion. This paper presents the first method in computer graphics that combines uplift and hydraulic erosion to generate visually plausible terrains. Given a user-painted uplift map, we generate a stream graph over the entire domain embedding elevation information and stream flow. Our approach relies on the stream power equation introduced in geology for hydraulic erosion. By combining crust uplift and stream power erosion we generate large realistic terrains at a low computational cost. Finally, we convert this graph into a digital elevation model by blending landform feature kernels whose parameters are derived from the information in the graph. Our method gives high-level control over the large scale dendritic structures of the resulting river networks, watersheds, and mountains ridges

    Interactive design of 2D car profiles with aerodynamic feedback

    International audienceThe design of car shapes requires a delicate balance between aesthetic and performance. While fluid simulation provides themeans to evaluate the aerodynamic performance of a given shape, its computational cost hinders its usage during the early explorative phases of design, when aesthetic is decided upon. We present an interactive system to assist designers in creating aerodynamic car profiles. Our system relies on a neural surrogate model to predict fluid flow around car shapes, providing fluid visualization and shape optimization feedback to designers as soon as they sketch a car profile. Compared to prior work that focused on time-averaged fluid flows, we describe how to train our model on instantaneous, synchronized observations extracted from multiple pre-computed simulations, such that we can visualize and optimize for dynamic flow features, such as vortices. Furthermore, we architectured our model to support gradient-based shape optimization within a learned latent space of car profiles. In addition to regularizing the optimization process, this latent space and an associated encoder-decoder allows us to input and output car profiles in a bitmap form, without any explicit parameterization of the car boundary. Finally, we designed our model to support pointwise queries of fluid properties around car shapes, allowing us to adapt computational cost to application needs. As an illustration, we only query our model along streamlines for flow visualization, we query it in the vicinity of the car for drag optimization, and we query it behind the car for vortex attenuation

    Three cases of molecularly confirmed Knobloch syndrome

    Background: Knobloch syndrome (OMIM 267750) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder due to genetic defects in the COL18A1 gene. The triad of high myopia, occipital defect, vitreoretinal degeneration has been described as pathognomonic for this condition. Patients with Knobloch syndrome have also extraocular problems as brain and kidney malformations. High genetic and phenotypic variation has been reported in the affected patients. Materials and Methods: Here we provide detailed clinical description of 3 individuals with Knobloch syndrome. Ocular examination and fundus imaging have been performed. Detailed information about systemic conditions has been provided. Results: Mutations in COL18A1 were identified in all three patients. Patient 1 had congenital hip dislocation and patient 2 had renal atrophy, cardiac insufficiency and difficult skin healing. Conclusions: With this report we add to the clinical and genetic knowledge of this rare condition

    The authors accomplish a phytosociological study of the salt thermomineral spring vegetation in Auvergne. They follow a ‘braun-blanqueto-tüxenian’ approach of the association. Despite a large number of relevés carried out on the salty sites of Auvergne, the communities stay unknown as it seems necessary to synthesize them and clarify their phytosociological status.The authors carry out an analysis and a synthesis of 176 phytosociological relevés illustrating the communities of the twenty salty localities known in Auvergne. From 16 sites, 69 relevés were specifically produced as part of this study.Nine communities are presented on the floristical and synecological plan : three new associations and six new sub-associations are described.Les auteurs réalisent une étude phytosociologique de la végétation des sources thermominérales salées d’Auvergne, en s’inscrivant dans une approche «braun-blanqueto-tüxenienne» de l’association. Malgré un grand nombre de relevés réalisés sur les sites salés d’Auvergne, les groupements restent méconnus et il semblait nécessaire d’en réaliser la synthèse pour en préciser le statut phytosociologique.Après une rapide présentation du contexte physiographique des localités étudiées et un bref rappel des travaux phytosociologiques antérieurs, les auteurs réalisent une analyse et une synthèse de 176 relevés phytosociologiques illustrant les communautés de la vingtaine de localités salifères connues en Auvergne.     Risk of Symptomatic Intracerebral Hemorrhage After Intravenous Thrombolysis in Patients With Acute Ischemic Stroke and High Cerebral Microbleed Burden: A Meta-analysis.

    IMPORTANCE Cerebral microbleeds (CMBs) have been established as an independent predictor of cerebral bleeding. There are contradictory data regarding the potential association of CMB burden with the risk of symptomatic intracerebral hemorrhage (sICH) in patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS) treated with intravenous thrombolysis (IVT). OBJECTIVE To investigate the association of high CMB burden (>10 CMBs on a pre-IVT magnetic image resonance [MRI] scan) with the risk of sICH following IVT for AIS. DATA SOURCES Eligible studies were identified by searching Medline and Scopus databases. No language or other restrictions were imposed. The literature search was conducted on October 7, 2015. This meta-analysis has adopted the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines and was written according to the Meta-analysis of Observational Studies in Epidemiology (MOOSE) proposal. STUDY SELECTION Eligible prospective study protocols that reported sICH rates in patients with AIS who underwent MRI for CMB screening prior to IVT. DATA EXTRACTION AND SYNTHESIS The reported rates of sICH complicating IVT in patients with AIS with pretreatment MRI were extracted independently for groups of patients with 0 CMBs (CMB absence), 1 or more CMBs (CMB presence), 1 to 10 CMBs (low to moderate CMB burden), and more than 10 CMBs (high CMB burden). An individual-patient data meta-analysis was also performed in the included studies that provided complete patient data sets. MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES Symptomatic intracerebral hemorrhage based on the European Cooperative Acute Stroke Study-II definition (any intracranial bleed with ≥4 points worsening on the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale score). RESULTS We included 9 studies comprising 2479 patients with AIS. The risk of sICH after IVT was found to be higher in patients with evidence of CMB presence, compared with patients without CMBs (risk ratio [RR], 2.36; 95% CI, 1.21-4.61; P = .01). A higher risk for sICH after IVT was detected in patients with high CMB burden (>10 CMBs) when compared with patients with 0 to 10 CMBs (RR, 12.10; 95% CI, 4.36-33.57; P < .001) or 1 to 10 CMBs (RR, 7.01; 95% CI, 3.20-15.38; P < .001) on pretreatment MRI. In the individual-patient data meta-analysis, high CMB burden was associated with increased likelihood of sICH before (unadjusted odds ratio, 31.06; 95% CI, 7.12-135.44; P < .001) and after (adjusted odds ratio, 18.17; 95% CI, 2.39-138.22; P = .005) adjusting for potential confounders. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE Presence of CMB and high CMB burdens on pretreatment MRI were independently associated with sICH in patients with AIS treated with IVT. High CMB burden may be included in individual risk stratification scores predicting sICH risk following IVT for AIS

    Cartographie des forêts anciennes de France : objectifs, bilan et perspectives

    Il y a dix ans démarraient les premiers travaux de vectorisation, à l'échelle régionale, des forêts de la carte d'Etat-Major, en vue de l'établissement d'une carte nationale des forêts à longue continuité de l'état boisé. Où en est-on aujourd'hui ? Nous faisons le point de l'avancement des travaux et en tirons les premiers enseignements, en répondant aux questions suivantes : Quels sont les définitions et concepts sous-jacents à ces travaux ? Pourquoi cartographier les forêts dites "anciennes" ou "récentes" ? L'analyse des institutions ayant réalisé le travail montre que ce sont principalement les milieux de la conservation qui ont été moteurs dans ces travaux. Mais la production et la qualité des produits bois sont aussi concernés par cette cartographie. Le rôle actuel de puits de carbone des forêts françaises ne peut par exemple se comprendre qu'au travers de cette dynamique forestière ancienne. Pourquoi une focalisation sur la première moitié du XIXe siècle comme date de référence ? Que signifie la notion de minimum forestier ? Quelles en sont les limites ? Quels sont les supports de données les plus intéressantes pour cette cartographie ? Pourquoi la carte d'Etat-Major est une source particulière d'information, dans l'objectif de la cartographie des forêts anciennes, parmi la multitude de cartes ou statistiques disponibles à différentes dates et échelles ? Quelles sont les méthodes d'acquisition de la donnée ? Quelle est la précision spatiale des cartes d'occupation du sol obtenues ? Les principaux problèmes posés par l'utilisation de la carte d'Etat-Major seront présentés, ainsi que la façon dont différents projets y ont répondu. Quels résultats ont été obtenus ? Nous reviendrons entre autres sur l'estimation de la surface forestière française à la date de son minimum. Les cartes déjà réalisées, sur 33% du territoire, permettent de dessiner avec précision et de comparer les changements d'occupation du sol dans différentes régions de France, en termes de pourcentage de déboisement, reboisement et taux de forêt ancienne dans la forêt actuelle. Les évolutions du couvert forestier issues d'autres sources non cartographiques sont-elles confirmées ? Le lien avec le type de propriété foncière est particulièrement intéressant à analyser. Dans plusieurs zones de France (Pyrénées, Luberon, Alpes, Lorraine, Nord-Pas-de-Calais...) ont été réalisés des croisements entre ces cartes et les bases de données régionales de relevés floristiques (Inventaire forestier national, conservatoires botaniques). Ce nouveau type d'analyse permet d'identifier rapidement les espèces végétales liées à la continuité de l'état boisé, dites espèces de forêts anciennes, et les traits de vie qui leur sont associés. Nous présenterons une synthèse de ces résultats. Dans la moitié des zones déjà cartographiées, ce sont toutes les occupations du sol anciennes qui ont été numérisées et non seulement les forêts. Nous évoquerons l'intérêt de ce cadastre ancien, au-delà des seules questions forestières, pour le suivi de la dynamique à long terme des prairies, des milieux humides, des vignes ou des milieux urbanisés. Les techniques de vectorisation des occupations anciennes du sol évoluent vers une simplification et une accélération qui laisse présager une fin du travail plus rapide que prévue initialement, parfois au détriment de la qualité. L'extension à la France entière permettra une vision à la fois à petite échelle mais localement précise des mouvements des masses forestières. Nous discuterons les perspectives de recherche et les développements en cours, ouverts par ces progrès

    Management of Cerebral Venous Thrombosis Due to Adenoviral COVID-19 Vaccination

    Objective Cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT) caused by vaccine-induced immune thrombotic thrombocytopenia (VITT) is a rare adverse effect of adenovirus-based severe acute respiratory syndrome-coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) vaccines. In March 2021, after autoimmune pathogenesis of VITT was discovered, treatment recommendations were developed. These comprised immunomodulation, non-heparin anticoagulants, and avoidance of platelet transfusion. The aim of this study was to evaluate adherence to these recommendations and its association with mortality. Methods We used data from an international prospective registry of patients with CVT after the adenovirus-based SARS-CoV-2 vaccination. We analyzed possible, probable, or definite VITT-CVT cases included until January 18, 2022. Immunomodulation entailed administration of intravenous immunoglobulins and/or plasmapheresis. Results Ninety-nine patients with VITT-CVT from 71 hospitals in 17 countries were analyzed. Five of 38 (13%), 11 of 24 (46%), and 28 of 37 (76%) of the patients diagnosed in March, April, and from May onward, respectively, were treated in-line with VITT recommendations (p < 0.001). Overall, treatment according to recommendations had no statistically significant influence on mortality (14/44 [32%] vs 29/55 [52%], adjusted odds ratio [OR] = 0.43, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.16-1.19). However, patients who received immunomodulation had lower mortality (19/65 [29%] vs 24/34 [70%], adjusted OR = 0.19, 95% CI = 0.06-0.58). Treatment with non-heparin anticoagulants instead of heparins was not associated with lower mortality (17/51 [33%] vs 13/35 [37%], adjusted OR = 0.70, 95% CI = 0.24-2.04). Mortality was also not significantly influenced by platelet transfusion (17/27 [63%] vs 26/72 [36%], adjusted OR = 2.19, 95% CI = 0.74-6.54). Conclusions In patients with VITT-CVT, adherence to VITT treatment recommendations improved over time. Immunomodulation seems crucial for reducing mortality of VITT-CVT. ANN NEUROL 2022Peer reviewe
