    Infrared-Faint Radio Sources: A New Population of High-redshift Radio Galaxies

    We present a sample of 1317 Infrared-Faint Radio Sources (IFRSs) that, for the first time, are reliably detected in the infrared, generated by cross-correlating the Wide-Field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) all-sky survey with major radio surveys. Our IFRSs are brighter in both radio and infrared than the first generation IFRSs that were undetected in the infrared by the Spitzer Space Telescope. We present the first spectroscopic redshifts of IFRSs, and find that all but one of the IFRSs with spectroscopy has z > 2. We also report the first X-ray counterparts of IFRSs, and present an analysis of radio spectra and polarization, and show that they include Gigahertz-Peaked Spectrum, Compact Steep Spectrum, and Ultra-Steep Spectrum sources. These results, together with their WISE infrared colours and radio morphologies, imply that our sample of IFRSs represents a population of radio-loud Active Galactic Nuclei at z > 2. We conclude that our sample consists of lower-redshift counterparts of the extreme first generation IFRSs, suggesting that the fainter IFRSs are at even higher redshift.Comment: 23 pages, 17 figures.     The Deepwater Horizon oil spill marine mammal injury assessment

    The studies described here were conducted as part of the DWH NRDA and included scientists funded through NOAA, other federal and state Trustees, and BP PLC. The John H. Prescott Marine Mammal Rescue Assistance Grant Program and the Marine Mammal Health and Stranding Response Program provided funding for this work in addition to the funding from the DWH NRDA.From 2010 to 2015, a team of scientists studied how the BP Deepwater Horizon (DWH) oil spill affected marine mammals inhabiting the northern Gulf of Mexico, as part of the DWH Natural Resource Damage Assessment process. The scientists conducted the assessment on behalf of the DWH co-Trustees, with the purpose of investigating whether marine mammals were exposed to DWH oil and what types of injuries they suffered as a result of the DWH oil exposure, and then quantifying those injuries to determine the appropriate amount of restoration required to offset the injuries. Photographs, aerial surveys, spatial analyses of the co-occurrence between surface slick and cetacean populations, and chemical fingerprinting of oiled and stranded carcasses all confirm that at least 15 cetacean species were exposed to the DWH surface slick. Cetaceans that encountered the slick likely inhaled, aspirated, ingested, and/or adsorbed oil. In this Theme Section, marine mammal biologists, statisticians, veterinarians, toxicologists, and epidemiologists describe and quantify the adverse effects of this oil exposure. Taken together, this combination of oil spill dynamics, veterinary assessments, pathological, spatial, and temporal analyses of stranded animals, stock identification techniques, population dynamics, and a broad set of coordinated modeling efforts is an unprecedented assessment of how a major oil spill impacted a large and complex marine mammal community and their connected habitats.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe

    Injuries in International Men’s Sixes Lacrosse: Injury Surveillance of the British Lacrosse Men’s National Team During a 9-Month Training Cycle Leading up to and Including The World Games 2022

    OBJECTIVE: To describe the injury epidemiology of a men’s national Sixes lacrosse team across training and competition. DESIGN: Prospective observation study. METHODS: This study prospectively observed in- juries that occurred within a training and competition cycle of the British Men’s National Lacrosse team. Data were collected by the team physiotherapist, injury incidence was calculated, and data categorized into injury type, body part, and mechanism. RESULTS: Forty-three injuries occurred during Sixes competition. Injury incidence varied between practice and tournaments. Twelve percent of all injuries were time loss. Two thirds of the time, players continued playing following intervention. One in every 5 injuries was treated with self-management strate- gies. Injuries most frequently occurred in competitive matches (65%). Most injuries were sustained through a contact mechanism (49%) or an overload mechanism (37%). The most frequent injuries were contusions (26%) and muscle injuries (26%). The lower limb was the most frequently injured area (63%), with the lower leg predominantly being the most affected part of the lower limb (63%). CONCLUSIONS: To our knowledge, this is the first epidemiology study of Sixes lacrosse injuries.     A return to in-person public engagement at STFC

    Since 2020, UKRI/STFC’s Scientific Computing Department (SCD) have developed several remote-first public engagement activities, drawing on its long and rich history of delivering face to face public engagement and outreach, as part of the wider STFC programme. With COVID19 restrictions lifted in the UK, STFC has been able to resume in-person public engagement, both on site and in public places. However, this has not meant a complete return to exclusively in-person engagement, but rather, recognising the clear benefits of remote engagement to meeting our strategic public engagement aims, STFC has produced a blended programme for 2022/23, with a mixture of in-person, remote and hybrid events. This paper presents how the remote activities have evolved since their initial creation, how the remote activities have become part of a blended programme and how the in-person activities in place since before the pandemic have been improved as a result of developing the remote activities

    Enhanced Photoacoustic Visualisation of Clinical Needles by Combining Interstitial and Extracorporeal Illumination of Elastomeric Nanocomposite Coatings

    Ultrasound (US) image guidance is widely used for minimally invasive procedures, but the invasive medical devices (such as metallic needles), especially their tips, can be poorly visualised in US images, leading to significant complications. Photoacoustic (PA) imaging is promising for visualising invasive devices and peripheral tissue targets. Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) acting as PA excitation sources facilitate the clinical translation of PA imaging, but the image quality is degraded due to the low pulse energy leading to insufficient contrast with needles at deep locations. In this paper, photoacoustic visualisation of clinical needles was enhanced by elastomeric nanocomposite coatings with superficial and interstitial illumination. Candle soot nanoparticle-polydimethylsiloxane (CSNP-PDMS) composites with high optical absorption and large thermal expansion coefficients were applied onto the needle exterior and the end-face of an optical fibre placed in the needle lumen. The excitation light was delivered at the surface by LED arrays and through the embedded optical fibre by a pulsed diode laser to improve the visibility of the needle tip. The performance was validated using an ex-vivo tissue model. An LED-based PA/US imaging system was used for imaging the needle out-of-plane and in-plane insertions over approach angles of 20 deg to 55 deg. The CSNP-PDMS composite conferred substantial visual enhancements on both the needle shaft and the tip, with an average of 1.7- and 1.6-fold improvements in signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs), respectively. With the extended light field involving extracorporeal and interstitial illumination and the highly absorbing coatings, enhanced visualisation of the needle shaft and needle tip was achieved with PA imaging, which could be helpful in current US-guided minimally invasive surgeries

    The role of values in collaborative consumption: insights from a product-service system for lending and borrowing in the UK

    Collaborative consumption is an emerging socio-economic model based on sharing, renting, gifting, bartering, swapping, lending and borrowing. Made possible through community interaction and, increasingly, use of network technologies, these alternative and more sustainable ways of consuming have attracted growing attention for their potential to prevent new purchases, intensify the use of idle assets and promote reuse of possessions that are no longer wanted. Nonetheless, the uptake of Product- Service Systems (PSSs) that enable collaborative consumption is still very limited. This paper investigates how consumers' values can influence the acceptance, adoption and diffusion of collaborative consumption. It reviews two theoretical frameworks used to understand pro-environmental behaviour, social psychological models of behaviour and social practice theory. Coming from contrasting disciplinary perspectives, these approaches conceptualise values differently. The paper evaluates the possibility of resolving these differences through a mixed methods study. It examines values empirically through a case study of Ecomodo, a UK-based online marketplace where people can lend and borrow each other's objects, spaces and skills, and present the results of a quantitative study which identified and measured value priorities among Ecomodo users through Schwartz's Portrait Value Questionnaire. It concludes with a discussion of the role of values in relation to the introduction and scaling up of PSSs that enable collaborative consumption

    MIGHTEE-HI: the HI Size-Mass relation over the last billion years

    We present the observed HI size-mass relation of 204204 galaxies from the MIGHTEE Survey Early Science data. The high sensitivity of MeerKAT allows us to detect galaxies spanning more than 4 orders of magnitude in HI mass, ranging from dwarf galaxies to massive spirals, and including all morphological types. This is the first time the relation has been explored on a blind homogeneous data set which extends over a previously unexplored redshift range of 0<z<0.0840 < z < 0.084, i.e. a period of around one billion years in cosmic time. The sample follows the same tight logarithmic relation derived from previous work, between the diameter (DHID_{\rm HI}) and the mass (MHIM_{\rm HI}) of HI discs. We measure a slope of 0.501±0.0080.501\pm 0.008, an intercept of −3.252−0.074+0.073-3.252^{+0.073}_{-0.074}, and an observed scatter of 0.0570.057 dex. For the first time, we quantify the intrinsic scatter of 0.054±0.0030.054 \pm 0.003 dex (∼10%{\sim} 10 \%), which provides a constraint for cosmological simulations of galaxy formation and evolution. We derive the relation as a function of galaxy type and find that their intrinsic scatters and slopes are consistent within the errors. We also calculate the DHI−MHID_{\rm HI} - M_{\rm HI} relation for two redshift bins and do not find any evidence for evolution with redshift. These results suggest that over a period of one billion years in lookback time, galaxy discs have not undergone significant evolution in their gas distribution and mean surface mass density, indicating a lack of dependence on both morphological type and redshift.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in MNRA

    The extraordinary linear polarisation structure of the southern Centaurus A lobe revealed by ASKAP

    We present observations of linear polarisation in the southern radio lobe of Centaurus A, conducted during commissioning of the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) telescope. We used 16 antennas to observe a 30 square degree region in a single 12 hour pointing over a 240 MHz band centred on 913 MHz. Our observations achieve an angular resolution of 26×3326\times33 arcseconds (480 parsecs), a maximum recoverable angular scale of 30 arcminutes, and a full-band sensitivity of 85 \muupJy beam−1^{-1}. The resulting maps of polarisation and Faraday rotation are amongst the most detailed ever made for radio lobes, with of order 105^5 resolution elements covering the source. We describe several as-yet unreported observational features of the lobe, including its detailed peak Faraday depth structure, and intricate networks of depolarised filaments.     Associations between childhood maltreatment and inflammatory markers.

    BACKGROUND:Childhood maltreatment is one of the strongest predictors of adulthood depression and alterations to circulating levels of inflammatory markers is one putative mechanism mediating risk or resilience.AimsTo determine the effects of childhood maltreatment on circulating levels of 41 inflammatory markers in healthy individuals and those with a major depressive disorder (MDD) diagnosis. METHOD:We investigated the association of childhood maltreatment with levels of 41 inflammatory markers in two groups, 164 patients with MDD and 301 controls, using multiplex electrochemiluminescence methods applied to blood serum. RESULTS:Childhood maltreatment was not associated with altered inflammatory markers in either group after multiple testing correction. Body mass index (BMI) exerted strong effects on interleukin-6 and C-reactive protein levels in those with MDD. CONCLUSIONS:Childhood maltreatment did not exert effects on inflammatory marker levels in either the participants with MDD or the control group in our study.
