Healthy living in Oregon project
The Institute of Medicine has identified Latino and American Indian populations as populations experiencing significant health and health care access inequities. Previous research indicates that Latinos and American Indians suffer from excess morbidity in respect to same-aged White adults due to higher rates of preventable chronic diseases (i.e. high blood pressure, and diabetes)
There are two main objectives of this study:
1. Identify the prominent health-related issues in two Oregon Latino communities and one American Indian community
2. Examine the factors that key informants perceive as enabling or inhibiting healthy lifestyles of community residents
Conceptualization of Autism in the Latino Community and its Relationship with Early Diagnosis
Objective—Early identification of autism spectrum disorders (ASD) has been linked to improved long-term developmental outcomes. However, Latino children are diagnosed later than white non- Latino children. We aimed to qualitatively assess the understanding and conceptualization of ASD in the Latino community in order to understand potential community barriers to early diagnosis.
Method—We conducted 5 focus groups and 4 qualitative interviews with 30 parents of typicallydeveloping Latino children in Oregon. Participants were asked structured questions concerning video vignettes that follow a Latina mother from the time she begins to worry about her 3-year-old son\u27s behaviors to the time he receives an ASD diagnosis. Focus groups and interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed and independently coded. Coded data were analyzed using thematic analysis.
Results—Many Latino families in the study had not heard of ASD or had little information about it. Families sometimes assumed ASD red flags were normal or could be attributed to family dysfunction. Families also had concerns about provider communication and access to language services. Having a child with a developmental delay was associated with embarrassment, rejection, and family burden, making it difficult for parents to raise developmental concerns with providers.
Conclusion—Pediatric providers should not assume that Latino parents have heard of ASD or know its symptoms. Providers should be aware that parents may be reluctant to mention concerns due to cultural factors. The health care system needs to improve resources for Latino parents with limited English proficiency. Policies should encourage the use of developmental screening in primary car
Lung Adenocarcinoma Distally Rewires Hepatic Circadian Homeostasis
The circadian clock controls metabolic and physiological processes through finely tuned molecular mechanisms. The clock is remarkably plastic and adapts to exogenous "zeitgebers," such as light and nutrition. How a pathological condition in a given tissue influences systemic circadian homeostasis in other tissues remains an unanswered question of conceptual and biomedical importance. Here, we show that lung adenocarcinoma operates as an endogenous reorganizer of circadian metabolism. High-throughput transcriptomics and metabolomics revealed unique signatures of transcripts and metabolites cycling exclusively in livers of tumor-bearing mice. Remarkably, lung cancer has no effect on the core clock but rather reprograms hepatic metabolism through altered pro-inflammatory response via the STAT3-Socs3 pathway. This results in disruption of AKT, AMPK, and SREBP signaling, leading to altered insulin, glucose, and lipid metabolism. Thus, lung adenocarcinoma functions as a potent endogenous circadian organizer (ECO), which rewires the pathophysiological dimension of a distal tissue such as the liver

Characterization of production systems under an agroforestry systems approach of the middle right bank of the Huallaga river –Aucayacu

The radio soap opera as a pedagogical practice for reading learning in primary school
Se utilizaron técnicas de recolección de datos como;
The radionovela is a disused radio genre with a
colloquial language that moves the listeners in
their linguistic behaviors through their daily influence.
Whose language can favor learning in the
reading comprehension of students. The purpose
of the study was to implement the radionovela as
a pedagogical practice for reading learning in elementary
school. This was guided under the methodological
guidelines of the IEP with a design
based on the trajectories of inquiry. Data collection
techniques were used, such as; the participant
observation and the field diary. The population
was conformed by forty (40) primary students of
the IED Cerro Blanco of the Municipality of Zona
Bananera, Magdalena. It was evidenced that the
students improved their reading comprehension
and therefore their academic performance observing
that the accompaniment at home was often limited
because the adults did not know how to read
and through the implementation of the radionovela
they were able to understand and accompany the
students in the process of learning, concluding
that any educational action is composed of social
relations, are manifested under pedagogical forms
those social representations that are visible in this
radial genre
COVID-19 symptoms at hospital admission vary with age and sex: results from the ISARIC prospective multinational observational study
Background:
The ISARIC prospective multinational observational study is the largest cohort of hospitalized patients with COVID-19. We present relationships of age, sex, and nationality to presenting symptoms.
Methods:
International, prospective observational study of 60 109 hospitalized symptomatic patients with laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 recruited from 43 countries between 30 January and 3 August 2020. Logistic regression was performed to evaluate relationships of age and sex to published COVID-19 case definitions and the most commonly reported symptoms.
Results:
‘Typical’ symptoms of fever (69%), cough (68%) and shortness of breath (66%) were the most commonly reported. 92% of patients experienced at least one of these. Prevalence of typical symptoms was greatest in 30- to 60-year-olds (respectively 80, 79, 69%; at least one 95%). They were reported less frequently in children (≤ 18 years: 69, 48, 23; 85%), older adults (≥ 70 years: 61, 62, 65; 90%), and women (66, 66, 64; 90%; vs. men 71, 70, 67; 93%, each P < 0.001). The most common atypical presentations under 60 years of age were nausea and vomiting and abdominal pain, and over 60 years was confusion. Regression models showed significant differences in symptoms with sex, age and country.
Interpretation:
This international collaboration has allowed us to report reliable symptom data from the largest cohort of patients admitted to hospital with COVID-19. Adults over 60 and children admitted to hospital with COVID-19 are less likely to present with typical symptoms. Nausea and vomiting are common atypical presentations under 30 years. Confusion is a frequent atypical presentation of COVID-19 in adults over 60 years. Women are less likely to experience typical symptoms than men
