Ca impurity in small mixed He-He clusters
The structure of small mixed helium clusters doped with one calcium atom has
been determined within the diffusion Monte Carlo framework. The results show
that the calcium atom sits at the He-He interface. This is in agreement
with previous studies, both experimental and theoretical, performed for large
clusters. A comparison between the results obtained for the largest cluster we
have considered for each isotope shows a clear tendency of the Ca atom to
reside in a deep dimple at the surface of the cluster for He clusters, and
to become fully solvated for He clusters. We have calculated the absorption
spectrum of Ca around the transition and have found that
it is blue-shifted from that of the free-atom transition by an amount that
depends on the size and composition of the cluster.Comment: 24 pages, 11 figures. Accepted on Journal of Chemical Physic
A human plasma derived supplement preserves function of human vascular cells in absence of fetal bovine serum
Current techniques for cell culture routinely use animal-derived components. Fetal bovine serum (FBS) is the most widely applied supplement, but it often displays significant batch-to-batch variations and is generally not suitable for clinical applications in humans. A robust and xeno-free alternative to FBS is of high interest for cellular therapies, from early in vitro testing to clinical trials in human subjects. In the current work, a highly consistent human plasma derived supplement (SCC) has been tested, as a potential substitute of FBS in primary human vascular cells culture. Our results show that SCC is able to support proliferation, preserve cellular morphology and potentiate functionality analogously to FBS. We conclude that SCC is a viable substitute of FBS for culture and expansion of cells in advanced therapies using human vascular cells and fibroblasts
Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and International Business Travel: Mobility Allies?
Like forecasts about the paperless office, technological solutions to the problem of international business travel continue to be deferred. As with the increased use of office paper, international business travel is defying predictions of its decline. There is growing evidence to suggest that business sectors which seem ideally placed to substitute information and communication technology (ICT) for travel, are actually generating more physical travel than other sectors. This paper develops a case study of the Irish software industry to exemplify why international travel is not diminishing in importance how and the ICT and business travel relationship is changing in this sector. The paper presents research findings that suggest that a cycle of substitution, generation and modification relationships have occurred as mobility interdependencies have developed.Peer Reviewe
Atomic waveguide QED with atomic dimers
Quantum emitters coupled to a waveguide is a paradigm of quantum optics, whose essential properties are described by waveguide quantum electrodynamics (QED). We study the possibility of observing the typical features of the conventional waveguide QED scenario in a system where the role of the waveguide is played by a one-dimensional subwavelength atomic array. For the role of emitters, we propose to use anti-symmetric states of atomic dimers - a pair of closely spaced atoms - as effective two-level systems, which significantly reduces the effect of free-space spontaneous emission. We solve the dynamics of the system both when the dimer frequency lies inside and when it lies outside the band of modes of the array. Along with well-known phenomena of collective emission into the guided modes and waveguide mediated long-range dimer-dimer interactions, we uncover significant non-Markovian corrections which arise from both the finiteness of the array and through retardation effects
Effect of Winter Grazing Management of Stockpiled Native Pastures of Basaltic Soils of Uruguay on Daily Gains of Heifers
The effect of three grazing systems of fall stockpiled native pastures on the winter gains of 66 Hereford heifers (135 kg) was studied. Treatments were: continuos grazing (CG); (C7) the plot was divided in 12 and each was grazed for 7 days and (C28), the plot was divided in 3 and each were grazed for 28 days. Heifers were weighed every 14 days and grazing behaviour was recorded. Stockpiled HM was greater (P\u3c 0.05) in C7 and C28 than in CG (988, 912, and 604 kg DM/ha, respectively). Herbage allowance (HA) was greater (P\u3c 0.01) in CG followed by C28 and C7 (11.7, 6.6 and 5.9 kg DM/100 kg LW, respectively). Post-grazing HM was greater (P0.05) in all pastures (CP 10.2%, NDF 71.2%, ADF 41.3% and ash 14.4%). Final LW of heifers were similar (P\u3e 0.05) (167, 162 and 160 kg for CG, C7 and C28, respectively). A very mild winter favoured exceptional gains which tended to be higher in CG (0.353 kg/day) than in C7 (0.305 kg/day) and C28 (0.278 kg/day). Grazing time was greater (P\u3c 0.05) in CG and bite rate was lower in C28 than in C7 and CG heifers. Grazing management did not affect daily gains. Nevertheless, total remaining HM in C28 and more so in C7 more than doubled that in CG, where more animals could have grazed with increasing total productivity
Workshop on Learning and Evaluating Recommendations with Impressions (LERI)
Recommender systems typically rely on past user interactions as the primary source of information for making predictions. However, although highly informative, past user interactions are strongly biased. Impressions, on the other hand, are a new source of information that indicate the items displayed on screen when the user interacted (or not) with them, and have the potential to impact the field of recommender systems in several ways. Early research on impressions was constrained by the limited availability of public datasets, but this is rapidly changing and, as a consequence, interest in impressions has increased. Impressions present new research questions and opportunities, but also bring new challenges. Several works propose to use impressions as part of recommender models in various ways and discuss their information content. Others explore their potential in off-policy-estimation and reinforcement learning. Overall, the interest of the community is growing, but efforts in this direction remain disconnected. Therefore, we believe that a workshop would be useful in bringing the community together
Obstacle detection and avoidance on sidewalks
We present part of a vision system for blind and visually impaired people. It detects obstacles on sidewalks and provides guidance to avoid them. Obstacles are trees, light poles, trash cans, holes, branches, stones and other objects at a distance of 3 to 5 meters from the camera position. The system first detects the sidewalk borders,
using edge information in combination with a tracking mask, to obtain straight lines with their slopes and the vanishing point. Once the borders are found, a rectangular window is defined within which two obstacle
detection methods are applied. The first determines the variation of the maxima and minima of the gray levels of the pixels. The second uses the binary edge image and searches in the vertical and horizontal histograms for discrepancies of the number of edge points. Together, these methods allow to detect possible obstacles with
their position and size, such that the user can be alerted and informed about the best way to avoid them. The system works in realtime and complements normal navigation with the cane
Current methods of soccer match analysis
Como conclusión podemos decir que hemos observado sin embargo una metodología diferente entre las opciones comerciales disponibles y una tecnología ubicada todavía en una etapa inicial de desarrolloA review of 86 references has been made, in order to analyze through the most recent studies the benefits and limitations of the new systems for the analysis of soccer player during the match, due to the fact that the greater performance requirements of modern soccer is forcing to review his physical demands, as well as planning models and traditional training methods. The results show that the computer-aided video analysis for coding movement patterns and the GPS technology are presented as very useful tools for a better understanding of the players physical load, whereas the observational design facilitates assessment of the technical-tactical behavior of the soccer player and the team. In conclusion we can say that we have however observed a different methodology among the available commercial options and a technology still placed at an initial stage of development
