Acute Physiological and Psychological Stress Response in Youth at Clinical High-Risk for Psychosis
Deficits in stress-response systems are a characteristic of schizophrenia and psychosis spectrum illnesses, and recent evidence suggests that this impairment may be evident in those at clinical high-risk (CHR) for the development of a psychotic disorder. However, there is limited research specifically investigating biological and subjective stress reactivity in CHR individuals. In the present study, 38 CHR individuals and group of 38 control individuals participated in the Trier Social Stress Test (TSST), an experimentally induced psychosocial stressor. Changes in salivary cortisol and alpha amylase, as well as self-reported units of distress (SUDS), were evaluated. Interestingly, the TSST did not induce a change in cortisol levels in either group, though the CHR group did show higher overall cortisol levels throughout the TSST (pre-anticipation period through recovery period). However, indicative of an effective task manipulation, the TSST did illicit an increase in alpha amylase in both groups. CHR participants exhibited higher levels of subjective stress prior to the stressor compared to the control group and CHR SUDs did not significantly increase in response to the stressor. In contrast, the control group showed an increase in SUDS in response to the stressor. Notably, SUDS for the control group post task mirrored the levels CHR youth endorsed prior to the stressor. Taken together, these findings suggest that there may be a functional relationship between persistently elevated cortisol and chronic high levels of subjective distress in CHR individuals.</p
A New Population of High-z, Dusty Lyα Emitters and Blobs Discovered by WISE: Feedback Caught in the Act?
By combining data from the NASA Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) mission with optical spectroscopy from the W. M. Keck telescope, we discover a mid-IR color criterion that yields a 78% success rate in identifying rare, typically radio-quiet, 1.6 ≾ z ≾ 4.6 dusty Lyα emitters (LAEs). Of these, at least 37% have emission extended on scales of 30-100 kpc and are considered Lyα "blobs" (LABs). The objects have a surface density of only ~0.1 deg^(–2), making them rare enough that they have been largely missed in deep, small area surveys. We measured spectroscopic redshifts for 92 of these galaxies, and find that the LAEs (LABs) have a median redshift of 2.3 (2.5). The WISE photometry coupled with data from Herschel (Herschel is an ESA space observatory with science instruments provided by European-led Principal Investigator consortia and with important participation from NASA) reveals that these galaxies are in the Hyper Luminous IR galaxy regime (L IR ≳ 10^(13)-10^(14) L_☉) and have warm colors. They are typically more luminous and warmer than other dusty, z ~ 2 populations such as submillimeter-selected galaxies and dust-obscured galaxies. These traits are commonly associated with the dust being illuminated by intense active galactic nucleus activity. We hypothesize that the combination of spatially extended Lyα, large amounts of warm IR-luminous dust, and rarity (implying a short-lived phase) can be explained if the galaxies are undergoing brief, intense "feedback" transforming them from an extreme dusty starburst/QSO into a mature galaxy
Development of a core outcome set for physiotherapy trials in adults with bronchiectasis (the COS-PHyBE study): A Delphi study and consensus meeting
Physiotherapy is recommended for bronchiectasis management, but there is disparity in evidence supporting its use. This is partly because of inconsistency and poor reporting of outcomes in available studies. A Core Outcome Set (COS) may improve trial consistency and decrease reporting bias. This study aimed to develop a COS for physiotherapy clinical trials in adults with bronchiectasis. A comprehensive list of outcomes was developed using a systematic review and qualitative semi-structured interviews with patients with bronchiectasis and physiotherapists.An international two-round online Delphi survey was conducted. Outcomes scored 7-9 (crucial) by ≥ 70 % of participants and 1-3 (not that important) by ≤ 15 % of participants from each stakeholder in the Likert scale were nominated for inclusion in the COS. Nominated outcomes and those considered crucial by only one of the stakeholders' groups were further discussed and voted in an international consensus meeting. A list of 137 outcomes was generated; 104 from literature and 33 from interviews. A Delphi survey containing 59 outcomes was completed by 171 participants from 20 countries. After the consensus meeting, representatives agreed on seven outcomes: health-related quality of life, respiratory symptoms, physical functioning, emotional and psychological functioning, fatigue, adherence to treatment, and functional exercise capacity. A minimum set of seven outcomes are recommended to be included as measurements in future trials evaluating physiotherapy interventions for bronchiectasis. [Abstract copyright: © 2024 The Authors. We report a new technique to select 1.6<z<4.6 dusty Lyman-alpha emitters
(LAEs), over a third of which are `blobs' (LABs) with emission extended on
scales of 30-100kpc. Combining data from the NASA Wide-field Infrared Survey
Explorer (WISE) mission with optical spectroscopy from the W.M. Keck telescope,
we present a color criteria that yields a 78% success rate in identifying rare,
dusty LAEs of which at least 37% are LABs. The objects have a surface density
of only ~0.1 per square degree, making them rare enough that they have been
largely missed in narrow surveys. We measured spectroscopic redshifts for 92 of
these WISE-selected, typically radio-quiet galaxies and find that the LAEs
(LABs) have a median redshift of 2.3 (2.5). The WISE photometry coupled with
data from Herschel reveals that these galaxies have extreme far-infrared
luminosities (L_IR>10^{13-14}L_sun) and warm colors, typically larger than
submillimeter-selected galaxies (SMGs) and dust-obscured galaxies (DOGs). These
traits are commonly associated with the dust being energized by intense AGN
activity. We hypothesize that the combination of spatially extended
Lyman-alpha, large amounts of warm IR-luminous dust, and rarity (implying a
short-lived phase) can be explained if the galaxies are undergoing strong

Spitzer Photometry of WISE-Selected Brown Dwarf and Hyper-Luminous Infrared Galaxy Candidates
We present Spitzer 3.6 and 4.5 m photometry and positions for a sample
of 1510 brown dwarf candidates identified by the WISE all-sky survey. Of these,
166 have been spectroscopically classified as objects with spectral types M(1),
L(7), T(146), and Y(12); Sixteen other objects are non-(sub)stellar in nature.
The remainder are most likely distant L and T dwarfs lacking spectroscopic
verification, other Y dwarf candidates still awaiting follow-up, and assorted
other objects whose Spitzer photometry reveals them to be background sources.
We present a catalog of Spitzer photometry for all astrophysical sources
identified in these fields and use this catalog to identify 7 fainter (4.5
m 17.0 mag) brown dwarf candidates, which are possibly wide-field
companions to the original WISE sources. To test this hypothesis, we use a
sample of 919 Spitzer observations around WISE-selected high-redshift
hyper-luminous infrared galaxy (HyLIRG) candidates. For this control sample we
find another 6 brown dwarf candidates, suggesting that the 7 companion
candidates are not physically associated. In fact, only one of these 7 Spitzer
brown dwarf candidates has a photometric distance estimate consistent with
being a companion to the WISE brown dwarf candidate. Other than this there is
no evidence for any widely separated ( 20 AU) ultra-cool binaries. As an
adjunct to this paper, we make available a source catalog of 7.33
objects detected in all of these Spitzer follow-up fields for use
by the astronomical community. The complete catalog includes the Spitzer 3.6
and 4.5 m photometry, along with positionally matched and
photometry from USNO-B; , , and photometry from 2MASS; and ,
, , and photometry from the WISE all-sky catalog

Evidence for divergent patterns of local selection driving venom variation in Mojave Rattlesnakes (\u3ci\u3eCrotalus scutulatus\u3c/i\u3e)
Snake venoms represent an enriched system for investigating the evolutionary processes that lead to complex and dynamic trophic adaptations. It has long been hypothesized that natural selection may drive geographic variation in venom composition, yet previous studies have lacked the population genetic context to examine these patterns. We leverage range-wide sampling of Mojave Rattlesnakes (Crotalus scutulatus) and use a combination of venom, morphological, phylogenetic, population genetic, and environmental data to characterize the striking dichotomy of neurotoxic (Type A) and hemorrhagic (Type B) venoms throughout the range of this species. We find that three of the four previously identified major lineages within C. scutulatus possess a combination of Type A, Type B, and a ‘mixed’ Type A + B venom phenotypes, and that fixation of the two main venom phenotypes occurs on a more fine geographic scale than previously appreciated. We also find that Type A + B individuals occur in regions of inferred introgression, and that this mixed phenotype is comparatively rare. Our results support strong directional local selection leading to fixation of alternative venom phenotypes on a fine geographic scale, and are inconsistent with balancing selection to maintain both phenotypes within a single population. Our comparisons to biotic and abiotic factors further indicate that venom phenotype correlates with fang morphology and climatic variables. We hypothesize that links to fang morphology may be indicative of co-evolution of venom and other trophic adaptations, and that climatic variables may be linked to prey distributions and/or physiology, which in turn impose selection pressures on snake venoms
Models for Access to Maternal Smoking cessation Support (MAMSS): a study protocol of a quasi-experiment to increase the engagement of pregnant women who smoke in NHS Stop Smoking Services
Background: Maternal smoking is a key cause of poor outcomes for mothers, babies and children and Wales has higher rates of smoking in pregnancy than any other UK country. Despite various improvements within the NHS Stop Smoking Service to strengthen the intervention for pregnant women, referrals and successful quit attempts for this group have continued to remain extremely low. A key element of UK national guidance for smoking cessation during pregnancy is to provide a flexible and tailored service to help increase levels of engagement. This study aims to test the effectiveness of three different models of service delivery to address the gap in the evidence base about how to deliver a flexible, tailored smoking cessation service to pregnant women. Methods: This study will adopt a quasi-experimental design over a 12 month period. The setting is four of Wales’ seven Health Boards using an integrated approach between maternity services, local public health teams and the NHS Stop Smoking Service. Core recommendations from UK public health guidance are being implemented across intervention and usual care sites. Stop smoking support for pregnant women in intervention sites is being delivered more flexibly than in usual care sites. Both qualitative and quantitative approaches will be adopted to capture important contextual information and consider multiple perspectives. A health economic analysis will be undertaken using a cost-consequences analysis approach. The primary outcome measure is engagement with stop smoking services (defined as having at least one face-to-face therapeutic contact with a clinician). Discussion: Supporting pregnant women to stop smoking is a challenging area of public health. The proposed study will address several areas where there are key evidence gaps relating to smoking cessation interventions for pregnant women. Specifically, how best to encourage pregnant women to attend a specialist stop smoking support service, how to deliver the service and who should provide it
