    On the Role of Sublimation in the Works of Gabriele Reuter

    In my thesis I discuss the relationship between Nietzsche’s concept of amor fati (love of fate) and Lacan’s understanding of sublimation through the lens of selected works by Gabriele Reuter. I argue that Reuter deploys an understanding of will power that draws on the Nietzschean concept of amor fati, which ultimately serves the function of sublimation as discussed by Lacan. In their respective efforts at establishing their own identities, the female protagonists in Reuter’s novels have to learn to overcome their sufferings, and in doing so they transform the process of identity formation into a life-affirming enterprise in the spirit of Nietzsche’s Zarathustra. Language, or the symbolic order, serves as an instrumental tool for identity formation according to Lacan, whereby the father as the ultimate signifier serves as the law for symbolic order, or discourse. To become women on their own terms, all three female protagonists discussed in the thesis must break with the Name-of-the-Father – a Lacanian term discussed at length in the thesis – and enter into discourse as subjects with a sense of self separate from the physical and symbolic power represented by the father

    Habitat selection of a parasitoid mediated by volatiles informing on host and intraguild predator densities

    To locate and evaluate host patches before oviposition, parasitoids of herbivorous insects utilize plant volatiles and host-derived cues, but also evaluate predator-derived infochemicals to reduce predation risks. When foraging in host habitats infested with entomopathogenic fungi that can infect both a parasitoid and its host, parasitoids may reduce the risk of intraguild predation (IGP) by avoiding such patches. In this study, we examined whether the presence of the entomopathogenic fungi Metarhizium brunneum and Beauveria bassiana in soil habitats of a root herbivore, Delia radicum, affects the behavior of Trybliographa rapae, a parasitoid of D. radicum. Olfactometer bioassays revealed that T. rapae avoided fungal infested host habitats and that this was dependent on fungal species and density. In particular, the parasitoid avoided habitats with high densities of the more virulent fungus, M. brunneum. In addition, host density was found to be important for the attraction of T. rapae. Volatiles collected from host habitats revealed different compound profiles depending on fungal presence and density, which could explain the behavior of T. rapae. We conclude that T. rapae females may use volatile compounds to locate high densities of prey, but also compounds related to fungal presence to reduce the risk of IGP towards themselves and their offspring.     Influence of transient shade periods on the effects of drought on photosynthesis, carbohydrate accumulation and lipid peroxidation in sunflower leaves

    The effects of a slow-imposing two-weeks soil drying period, and subsequent re-watering, on leaf water potential (Ψ), gas exchange rates, chlorophyll fluorescence and on the concentrations of malondialdehyde (MDA) and non-structural carbohydrates (starch, hexose and sucrose) were determined in mature leaves of sunflower plants growing under controlled environmental conditions. To assess how transient shade periods, associated with increased cloud cover, may influence drought-induced effects on carbon assimilation, measurements were carried out both in plants kept under the photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) prevailing during the growth period and stress imposition (750 μmol m-2 s-1), and in plants subjected to a 5 hours-long period under a lower PPFD (200 μmol m-2 s-1). In plants kept under high PPFD, Ψ, stomatal conductance (g), net CO2 uptake rate (A), the quantum yield of photosystem II electron transport (Φe), the photochemical efficiency of open PSII reaction centres (Fv’/Fm’) and * Corresponding author. Correia) 1 the diurnal accumulation of total non-structural carbohydrates (TNC) were significantly depressed at the end of the soil drying period, whereas non-photochemical quenching (NPQ), the concentrations of MDA and the predawn pools of soluble sugars were found to increase. Under high-light level, drought-induced effects on lipid peroxidation, chlorophyll fluorescence parameters and gas exchange rates were fully reversed upon re-watering. However, the inhibition of diurnal accumulation of TNC still persisted two days following re-watering, suggesting that carbohydrate export rates were enhanced following stress relief. An overall positive effect was found upon transferring water-stressed plants to low light level, as indicated by the increases in Ψ, intrinsic water use efficiency (A/g), Φe and Fv’/Fm’, as well as the reversal of drought-induced enhancement of both NPQ and MDA concentration. Despite g being similar in shaded well-watered and re-watered plants, the latter exhibited net CO2 uptake rates below those found in well-watered leaves under the same light conditions, together with a diurnal decrease in the concentration of TNC that was mainly attributable to the depletion of starch and sucrose. These results indicate that contrasting with the positive effects of shading on water-stressed plants, low PPFD may negatively affect the recovery of net photosynthesis following stress relief

    Plasmodium falciparum Plasmepsin 2 Duplications, West Africa

    Dihydroartemisinin/piperaquine (DHA/PPQ) is increasingly deployed as antimalaria drug in Africa. We report the detection in Mali of Plasmodium falciparum infections carrying plasmepsin 2 duplications (associated with piperaquine resistance) in 7/65 recurrent infections within 2 months after DHA/PPQ treatment.     Pharmacokinetics of Carboplatin in Combination with Low-Dose Cyclophosphamide in Female Dogs with Mammary Carcinoma

    This prospective study aimed to evaluate the effect of metronomic cyclophosphamide on carboplatin’s tolerability, efficacy, and pharmacokinetics in dogs with mammary carcinoma. Sixteen female dogs with mammary carcinoma were divided into groups: 300 mg/m2 intravenous (i.v.) carboplatin therapy (G1 = 8) or 300 mg/m2 i.v. carboplatin which was associated with 12.5 mg/m2 oral cyclophosphamide in a metronomic regimen (G2 = 8). The investigated animals underwent a clinical evaluation, a mastectomy, a carboplatin chemotherapy, and serial blood sampling for the pharmacokinetic analysis. The adverse events and survival rates were monitored. A non-compartmental analysis was applied to calculate the pharmacokinetic parameters of carboplatin in the 2nd and 4th chemotherapy cycles. Carboplatin PK showed high interindividual variability with a 10-fold variation in the area under the plasma concentration–time curve (AUC) in G1. The systemic plasma exposure to carboplatin was equivalent in both of the treatments considering the AUC and maximum plasma concentration (Cmax) values. Although the red blood cells (p < 0.0001), platelets (p = 0.0005), total leukocytes (p = 0.0002), and segmented neutrophils (p = 0.0007) were reduced in G2, the survival rate increased (p = 0.0044) when it was compared to G1. In conclusion, adding low daily doses of cyclophosphamide to a carboplatin therapy showed promising outcomes in female dogs with mammary tumors
