Biocatalysis as Useful Tool in Asymmetric Synthesis: An Assessment of Recently Granted Patents (2014–2019)

The broad interdisciplinary nature of biocatalysis fosters innovation, as different technical fields are interconnected and synergized. A way to depict that innovation is by conducting a survey on patent activities. This paper analyses the intellectual property activities of the last five years (2014–2019) with a specific focus on biocatalysis applied to asymmetric synthesis. Furthermore, to reflect the inventive and innovative steps, only patents that were granted during that period are considered. Patent searches using several keywords (e.g., enzyme names) have been conducted by using several patent engine servers (e.g., Espacenet, SciFinder, Google Patents), with focus on granted patents during the period 2014–2019. Around 200 granted patents have been identified, covering all enzyme types. The inventive pattern focuses on the protection of novel protein sequences, as well as on new substrates. In some other cases, combined processes, multi-step enzymatic reactions, as well as process conditions are the innovative basis. Both industries and academic groups are active in patenting. As a conclusion of this survey, we can assert that biocatalysis is increasingly recognized as a useful tool for asymmetric synthesis and being considered as an innovative option to build IP and protect synthetic routes

¿Las infraestructuras como proyecto de ciudad?: algunas reflexiones sobre Burgos, ciudad intermedia de Castilla y León

Desde hace ya algunos años las infraestructuras han superado la simple función de artefactos que facilitan la vida urbana y se están convirtiendo en objetivo, en componente destacado de las políticas públicas que planifican el futuro de buena parte de nuestras ciudades. Carreteras, ferrocarriles, aeropuertos, polígonos industriales ... se diseñan, hoy en día, como auténticos proyectos de ciudad, como elementos capaces, por sí mismos, de sustentar no sólo la estructura morfológica y la identidad de cada urbe, sino también de inducir su crecimiento económico, mejorar su mercado laboral y aumentar, en fin, su grado de bienestar. Ahora bien, ¿son las infraestructuras, en sí mismas, un verdadero proyecto de futuro para una ciudad? ¿De qué modo se articula la ordenación de estas infraestructuras en la planificación municipal vigente en España? ¿Qué relación tiene esta articulación con las políticas sectoriales de las que en muchas ocasiones dependen este tipo de infraestructuras? ¿Existe horizonte posible para una ciudad sin infraestructuras? Este artículo se plantea algunas reflexiones al respecto en relación con la ciudad intermedia de Burgos, una de las capitales de provincia de la región de Castilla y León, en la que durante los últimos años se está desarrollando un interesante proceso de crecimiento y transformación urbana vinculado directamente a la implantación de relevantes infraestructuras.Infrastructures, in recent years, are not just simple artefacts that make urban life easy. In fact, infrastructures have exceeded their original functions becoming relevant in the new public policies. Roads, railways, airports, industrial states are designed nowadays as genuine city projects. Being able, by themselves, not only to sustain the morphological structure and the identity of each city, but also to induce its economic growth, improve its labour market and, finally, increase its welfare state. However, are these infrastructures per se a reliable project for a city? How are treated these structures in the current Spanish urban planning? How are sectorial policies that depended of such infrastructures conditioning this urban planning? Is there any future for a city with -no infrastructure-? This article proposes some views on the subject in relation to the medium-size city of Burgos, which is supporting a notably growth process and urban transformation linked directly to the accomplishment of pertinent infrastructures

Las dinámicas institucionales del éxito y del fracaso económico : un análisis institucional histórico y comparativo de España y Argentina (1950-2000)

Este artículo realiza un análisis institucional histórico y comparativo de las experiencias económicas de España y Argentina en la segunda mitad del siglo XX. ¿Por qué la economía española logró el salto hacia la prosperidad económica en ese periodo mientras la economía argentina no encontró la senda del éxito? ¿Qué variables institucionales permiten explicar la evolución en el tiempo de dos economías a través de sendas divergentes? ¿Se pueden extraer ciertas lecciones a partir de un análisis de ambas experiencias? Este trabajo intenta responder a estos interrogantes desde un enfoque propio de la Nueva Economía Institucional. La variable clave para hacerlos es el cambio institucional.__________________________This article develops an historical and comparative institutional analysis of the economic experiences of Spain and Argentina in the second half of the XX Century. Why did the Spanish economy obtain the jump towards the economic prosperity in that period while the Argentine economy did not find the path of success? Recent developments in the synthesis of β-diketones

Apart from being one of the most important intermediates in chemical synthesis, broadly used in the formation of C–C bonds among other processes, the β-dicarbonyl structure is present in a huge number of biologically and pharmaceutically active compounds. In fact, mainly derived from the well-known antioxidant capability associated with the corresponding enol tautomer, β-diketones are valuable compounds in the treatment of many pathological disorders, such as cardiovascular and liver diseases, hypertension, obesity, diabetes, neurological disorders, inflammation, skin dis-eases, fibrosis, or arthritis; therefore, the synthesis of these structures is an area of overwhelming interest for organic chemists. This paper is devoted to the advances achieved in the last ten years for the preparation of 1,3-diketones, using different chemical (Claisen, hydration of alkynones, decar-boxylative coupling) or catalytic (biocatalysis, organocatalytic, metal-based catalysis) methodologies: Additionally, the preparation of branched β-dicarbonyl compounds by means of α-functionalization of non-substituted 1,3-diketones are also discussed

Multienzymatic processes involving baeyer–villiger monooxygenases

Baeyer–Villiger monooxygenases (BVMOs) are flavin-dependent oxidative enzymes capable of catalyzing the insertion of an oxygen atom between a carbonylic Csp2 and the Csp3 at the alpha position, therefore transforming linear and cyclic ketones into esters and lactones. These enzymes are dependent on nicotinamides (NAD(P)H) for the flavin reduction and subsequent reaction with molecular oxygen. BVMOs can be included in cascade reactions, coupled to other redox enzymes, such as alcohol dehydrogenases (ADHs) or ene-reductases (EREDs), so that the direct conversion of alcohols or α,β-unsaturated carbonylic compounds to the corresponding esters can be achieved. In the present review, the different synthetic methodologies that have been performed by employing multienzymatic strategies with BVMOs combining whole cells or isolated enzymes, through sequential or parallel methods, are described, with the aim of highlighting the advantages of performing multienzymatic systems, and show the recent advances for overcoming the drawbacks of using BVMOs in these techniques.Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación PID2019-105337RB-C22Banco Santander-UCM PR87/19-2267

La experiencia de haber realizado mi práctica empresarial en el INSTITUTO NACIONAL PENITENCIARIO DE COLOMBIA (INPEC), me brindó la oportunidad de trabajar seis meses en uno de los Establecimientos Públicos más grandes del Estado, la cual significó una enorme contribución tanto en mi crecimiento profesional como personal. The present disertation deals with the ordeal that Miss Manuela Lavinas Picq had to go through as a foreigner with dual nationality at the moment of her stay in Ecuador. Her partner is a political leader who belongs to the government`s opposition party. She tried to obtain through all thepossible legal means and legal authorities a regular stay in Ecuador. Due to this a whole country will realize the existing loopholes in the Penal Code, and the lack of guarantees that state provides to national and foreign citizens. There refore it is important to propose improvements at the legal and institutional level, including those who are responsable for the respect and guaratee of all rights within the country.El presente trabajo trata sobre la odisea que tuvo que pasar Manuela Lavinas Picq, extranjera de doble nacionalidad. Mujer conviviente de un líder político, perteneciente a la oposición al gobierno. La cual trata por todas las instancias legales permanecer de manera regular en el Ecuador. Gracias a esto todo un país se dará cuenta de los vacíos legales existentes en su Código Penal y la falta de garantías que presta el estado a ciudadanos nacionales y extranjeros. Por ello se trata de proponer mejoras en el nivel judicial e institucional de los garantes de derecho en el país
