A survey on the public perception of CCS in France
An awareness and opinion survey on Carbon Capture and Storage was conducted on a representative sample of French aged 15 years and above. About 6\% of respondents were able to provide a satisfying definition of the technology. The key question about `approval of or opposition to' the use of CCS in France was asked twice, first after presenting the technology, then after exposing the potential adverse consequences. Approval rates, 59\% and 38\%, show that there is no a priori rejection of the technology. The sample was split in two to test for a semantic effect: questioning one half about `Stockage' (English: storage), the other about `Sequestration'. Manipulating the vocabulary had no statistically significant effect on approval rates. Stockage is more meaningful, but does not convey the idea of permanent monitoring.Carbon capture and storage; public opinion
Molecular recognition of tumor-associated antigens by lectins and antibodies
Every living cell on Earth is covered by glycans. They are inserted in proteins and lipids by a posttranslational modification called glycosylation. Their recognition by specific receptors is translated into distinct biological signals.
In cancer cells, a misregulation in expression and/or activity of glycosyltransferases, alters the mechanism of glycosylation, creating new glycan epitopes dubbed tumor-associated carbohydrate antigens (TACAs). These are recognized by various receptors, playing a major role in tumor immune responses and metastasis. To target cancer-associated glycan phenotype is crucial to disentangle the molecular recognition process that involves TACAs recognition and biosynthesis.
Therefore, NMR techniques were employed to investigate distinct glycan-protein systems: i) the molecular interactions between a mucin-1 (MUC1) related Tn-glycopeptide mimetic containing a non-natural amino acid and distinct antibodies by saturation transfer-difference (STD-NMR); ii) the molecular interactions between galectin-3 (Gal-3) and TF-antigen (TF-Thr and TF-peptide), by heteronuclear single quantum coherence 1H,15N-HSQC titrations, STD-NMR and line broadening analysis and iii) the glycosylation of MUC1 tandem repeated protein (G1VT3S4APDT8RPAPGS14T15APPAH20)4 by GalNAc-T3 using 1H,15N-HSQC and STD-NMR.
In i), the STD-NMR binding experiments show that all antibodies under study recognize the Tn-glycopeptide mimetic and point out structural differences that explain antibodies’ binding preferences.
In ii), the 1H,15N-HSQC titrations experiments indicate that Gal-3 binds both TF-derivatives. The dissociation constant KD estimated for both through chemical shift analysis also shows the same range of affinity (275 μM and 413 μM for TF-antigen and TF-peptide, respectively). STD-NMR results demonstrate that the protons from galactose in the TF-moiety govern the recognition process of Gal-3. In iii), the 1H,15N-HSQC experiments of MUC1 in presence of GalNAc-T3 show that the enzyme has preference to glycosylate first the Thr at –GVTS-, followed by the residue Thr at –GSTA-. STD-NMR confirms the cooperative mechanism between the lectin and catalytic domain of GalNAc-T3
Prediction of bacterial meningitis based on cerebrospinal fluid pleocytosis in children
AbstractChildren with cerebrospinal fluid pleocytosis are frequently treated with parenteral antibiotics, but only a few have bacterial meningitis. Although some clinical prediction rules, such as bacterial meningitis score, are of well-known value, the cerebrospinal fluid white blood cells count can be the initial available information. Our aim was to establish a cutoff point of cerebrospinal fluid white blood cell count that could distinguish bacterial from viral and aseptic meningitis. A retrospective study of children aged 29 days to 17 years who were admitted between January 1st and December 31th, 2009, with cerebrospinal fluid pleocytosis (white blood cell≥7μL−1) was conducted. The cases of traumatic lumbar puncture and of antibiotic treatment before lumbar puncture were excluded. There were 295 patients with cerebrospinal fluid pleocytosis, 60.3% females, medium age 5.0±4.3 years distributed as: 12.2% 1–3 months; 10.5% 3–12 months; 29.8% 12 months to 5 years; 47.5% >5 years. Thirty one children (10.5%) were diagnosed with bacterial meningitis, 156 (52.9%) viral meningitis and 108 (36.6%) aseptic meningitis. Bacterial meningitis was caused by Neisseria meningitidis (48.4%), Streptococcus pneumoniae (32.3%), other Streptococcus species (9.7%), and other agents (9.7%). cerebrospinal fluid white blood cell count was significantly higher in patients with bacterial meningitis (mean, 4839cells/μL) compared to patients with aseptic meningitis (mean, 159cells/μL, p<0.001), with those with aseptic meningitis (mean, 577cells/μL, p<0.001) and with all non-bacterial meningitis cases together (p<0.001). A cutoff value of 321white blood cell/μL showed the best combination of sensitivity (80.6%) and specificity (81.4%) for the diagnosis of bacterial meningitis (area under receiver operating characteristic curve 0.837). Therefore, the value of cerebrospinal fluid white blood cell count was found to be a useful and rapid diagnostic test to distinguish between bacterial and nonbacterial meningitis in children

Background: Sleep is precious and indispensable to a good balance. The aging process causes disturbances which reflect both the quantity and quality of sleep, being that these changes are aggravated in hospital situations.
Objectives: To evaluate sleep disorders of adults / hospitalized elderly patients and analyze the relationship with sociodemographic variables, clinical and chronic fatigue.
Methodology: This is a cross-sectional, descriptive and correlational study, of the quantitative type. For this purpose, a questionnaire was applied to 60 users, hospitalized, that included sociodemographic variables, a Chronic Fatigue Scale and the Sleep Quality Index of Pittsburgh (PSQI).
Results: The sample is mostly made up of male users, married, 75 years old and illiterate. They have performed their rehabilitation program daily between 16-30 minutes and only a few times do they feel ready to finish. The majority (55.00%) feel more active at afternoon, they sleep on average 6.8 hours, wake up often and sooner than intended. Chronic fatigue is present in the vast majority of respondents, with these feeling that they need to sleep more than what they normally sleep.
Conclusions: The majority of participants (96.70%) present sleep disorders during hospitalization, with this being associated to users with higher rates of chronic fatigue, of an older age, women and widows.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

The psychologic intervention with young people: educational perspective
The present article intends to realize the design, educational/pedagogical, focusing on the need to equate its foundations or ideologies, its purposes and its objectives, as well as all other instrumental components. Roughly, it attempts to operationalize and exemplify its great questions: what, why, for what and how. And while an example is proposed as a kindergarten, the suggested architecture is amenable to extension to others, or to all, contexts and educational situations.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
The goal of this study is to assess the notions that middle school students from both regular school and special education have of the concept of indiscipline. With this in mind, a quantitative study of comparative data and correlation was made: 200 hundred middle school students that attend one of these programs were chosen from two schools in the Almeirim county and submitted to an inquiry.
The data provided by the inquiry’s answers suggests that the notions the students have of indiscipline change with gender, age range and type of school. On the other hand, it does not establish a connection between their definition of indiscipline and the qualifications of the average citizen
