A material that “lends itself to fine interpretations”. The status of plaster in Marino Marini’s Oeuvre
The purpose of this paper aims to clarify the use of plaster in Marini’s artistic practice, both when the plaster is a unique piece, and when it is in relation with other materials. Even if Marini often used plaster in a ‘traditional’ way to make casts suitable for the translations to bronze or other materials, these sculptures are very often considered by the artist not only as translation tools and ‘mediation’ between the idea and the final plastic artwork, or academic exercise. For the artist, sculptures in plaster are also works with a proper autonomy that can render them final and definitive, as is evident from sculptures such as Piccola Pomona or Danzatrice, both made in the 1940s
Taking as a starting point the question of the different paradigms of relationship with the Earth, particularly in the context of theology, which leads to a paradigm of complex integration proposed by Laudato si’, this article aims to understand the relationship with the Earth based on its impact on the dimension of corporeality, namely through work. It is precisely in the articulation between body, work and land that an approach to Simone Weil’s thought is proposed. On the computation of the user's cost of capital in the presence of adjustments costs
This note derives the modified formula for the users cost of capital for a firm in a dynamic environment induced by the presence of adjustment costs. The formula in this note is exact in that it is derived from the disoret rather than continuous time specification of the economic problem of the firm
The development of the UN CRC’s approach to children and climate change: any impact on the future of youth-led climate litigation?
On August 22, 2023, the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child published General Comment No. 26 on Children’s Rights and the Environment, with a Special Focus on Climate Change (GC26). This GC is remarkable for being the first one entirely dedicated to environmental and climate protection in light of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. This contribution aims to explore the role of GC26 in the practice of the Committee in light of its first – and so far, only – decision in this regard, Sacchi et al. v. Argentina et al., and positions it in the context of youth-led climate litigation which reached a breakthrough since the Committee’s 2021 decision. The article also assesses the potential impact of GC26 on ongoing and future climate change cases and points out what could be done in order to enforce the perspective of future generations in the context of climate change
Accused of possessing a book of witchcraft, Francisco Barbosa was found to be under slight suspicion of heresy and abjured de levi on January 16, 1610. The sentence of the Inquisition comprised the burning of the book, a five-year exile to Brazil, catechesis, and some spiritual penances. This article is a micro-history of Francisco Barbosa’s trial in the Inquisition of Lisbon between 1608 and 1610. Its main goal is to reconstruct the biography of a seventeenth-century sorcerer from the unusual perspective of dissimulation. Taking into account Barbosa’s book of sorceries, this article also intends to inaugurate a broader reflection on the compilation of incantations as a counterpoint to the pious practice of collecting biblical and patristic citations in commonplaces, through the introduction of the concept of sortilegia.
As reformas universitárias no contexto do Iluminismo Católico (séc.
In this article we intend to make a comparative approach to the reforms of the Universities of Salamanca and Coimbra, in the second half of the 18th century, influenced by the Catholic Enlightenment. Starting from the hypothesis that this Catholic background forced the adoption strategies of ideas that circulated in the European space, we intend to identify in a comparative way the adoption of pedagogical and scientific ideas in the curricular construction, but also in the adoption of new works for the classes. Seeking, also, to establish parallels with the general lines that characterized other university reforms in Europe.
