Study of the knowledge about gamification of degree in primary education students

    Get PDF
Gamification refers to the use of game mechanics in non-recreational environments, such as the school environment, in order to enhance motivation, concentration, effort, commitment and other positive values common to all games. Gamification allows us to establish clear objectives that are presented to be overcome. It also offers constant feedback, shows the progression of students, recognizes their effort and it guides them over the course of the teaching and learning process. The aim is to measure the knowledge of future teachers about gamification as a didactic resource. The sample is composed of 164 students of the Degree in Primary Education in Galicia (Spain). The scale obtains a reliability of 0.94 α. The index of Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin (KMO) provides a value of 0.932 and Bartlett’s test of sphericity (χ2 = 2739,793; gl = 351, p < .000), ensuring that the factor analysis is right, and the model achieves a good fit. The students of the Degree in Primary Education have not heard of the term gamification, but still consider feasible its implementation in the school environment. The students feel that they don’t know enough about this teaching resource, and they are afraid of not achieving the curricular objectives using it as they have no control over the content to be taught

Audiometry is a test of behavior requiring intense interaction between patient and audiologist, so it is extremely difficult to properly assess patients with severe communication disorders. However, patients with cognitive decline often make some eye gestures in reaction to auditory stimuli. These reactions are interpreted by expert audiologists. On the other hand, a manual assessment of the patient creates problems such as subjectivity or low reproducibility, to name but two. Bearing this in mind, this paper introduces a novel methodology to analyze video recordings acquired during audiometric evaluations and characterize movements of the eye so they can be interpreted as a positive gestural reaction to sound. Motion analysis in the eye region helps the human expert to establish the existence of a reaction to sound, thus increasing the reproducibility and objectivity of the test. This work is supported by the Instituto de Salud Carlos III, Government of Spain and FEDER funds of the European Union through the PI14/02161 and the DTS15/00153 research projects. Evaluation of two alternative procedures for measuring airflow resistance of sound absorbing materials

[EN] It is well known that sound absorption and sound transmission properties of open porous materials are highly dependent on their airflow resistance values. Low values of airflow resistance indicate little resistance for air streaming through the porous material and high values are a sign that most of the pores inside the material are closed. The laboratory procedures for measuring airflow resistance have been stan- dardized by several organizations, including ISO and ASTM for both alternate flow and continuous flow. However, practical implementation of these standardized methods could be both complex and expensive. In this work, two indirect alternative measurement procedures were compared against the alternate flow standardized technique. The techniques were tested using three families of eco-friendly sound absorbent materials: recycled polyurethane foams, coconut natural fibres, and recycled polyester fibres. It is found that the values of airflow resistance measured using both alternative methods are very similar. There is also a good correlation between the values obtained through alternative and standardized methods. This project has been made possible thanks to the FONDECYT Project 1110605 and the grant GV/2012/066 Projects I+D for emerging research groups. In some cases, especially in the elderly population, the hearing loss may decrease in physical, mental and social well-being capacities. In particular, patients with signs of cognitive impairment typically present specific clinical–pathological conditions, which complicates the analysis and diagnosis of the type and severity of hearing loss by clinical specialists. In these patients, unconscious changes in gaze direction may indicate a certain perception of sound through their auditory system. In this context, this work presents a new system that supports clinical experts in the identification and classification of eye gestures that are associated with reactions to auditory stimuli by patients with different levels of cognitive impairment. The proposed system was validated using the public Video Audiometry Sequence Test (VAST) dataset, providing a global accuracy of 97.12% for the classification of eye gestures and a 100% for gestural reactions to auditory stimuli. The proposed system offers a complete analysis of audiometric video sequences, being applicable in daily clinical practice, improving the well-being and quality of life of the patients. This work is supported by the Instituto de Salud Carlos III, Government of Spain and FEDER funds of the European Union, Spain through the DTS18/00136 research projects and by the Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad, Government of Spain through the DPI2015-69948-R research project. The work presented has its origin in applied social research published in June 2020 entitled: “How to implement a family mediation system in Aragon”. Starting from the description of the lights and shadows of the current family mediation system, it explains the significance of social work and social services in an effort to advance towards a renewed system that will encourage and promote extrajudicial mediation as generated by such services. By so doing, this will add weight to the preventive dimension of intervention in family conflicts. It will also enable family mediation to be exercised either as a specific technique within the sphere of family intervention or as a specific methodology or service that is deployed from different theoretical models. depending on each case.In this context, social work as a discipline and as a profession is particularly relevant due to the training afforded not only to the practice of family mediation but also to other complementary techniques or methodologies of family intervention.

Rare Gold-Catalyzed 4-exo-dig Cyclization for Ring Expansion of Propargylic Aziridines toward Stereoselective (Z)‑Alkylidene Azetidines, via Diborylalkyl Homopropargyl Amines

We report an uncommon 4-exo-dig cyclization of N-tosyl homopropargyl amines, catalyzed by [AuCl(PEt3)]/AgOTf, to prepare stereoselective (Z)-2-alkylidene-1-tosylazetidine compounds. The reaction outcome contrasts with the gold-catalyzed cyclization of N-tosyl homopropargyl amines containing a methyl group at the propargylic position that provides substituted 2,3-dihydropyrroles via a 5-endo-dig mechanism. The access to N-tosyl homopropargyl amines is possible by the regioselective nucleophilic attack of α-diboryl alkylidene lithium salts to propargylic aziridinesThe authors thank Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad and Fondo Europeo de Desarrollo Regional (FEDER) through Projects PID2022-141693NB-I00, PID2020-113797RB-C21, and RED2022-134074-T, founded by MCIN/AEI/10.13039/ 501100011033 and “ERDF-A Way of Making Europe

Recovering Sicilian Silk Heritage through Digital Technologies: The Case of Piraino's Collection

    Get PDF
Textile conservation has given rise to small and medium-sized museums, usually with scarce resources. In Sicily, the little evidence that remains of silk production and opulent imports by the rich and powerful local aristocracy is kept in museums, parishes, and other cultural institutions. The documentation, dissemination, and enhancement of such a fragile heritage is today possible by means of technological tools that provide novel means to preserve, analyze, and exploit digital information. In this paper, we present some outcomes of the SILKNOW project, a project that applies computing research to the needs of diverse users (museums, educational institutions, the tourism industry, creative industries, media, etc.) and preserves the tangible and intangible heritage associated with silk. We show the methodology followed to build end users' needs into the Virtual Loom, a tool that deals with the 3D reconstruction of silk fabrics at the yarn level. We also provide a real example of how to integrate it at the museum level, specifically, at Piraino's Collection. The results demonstrate how small and medium-sized museums can access tools that will help them to carry out their daily tasks

Carbapenem Resistance in Acinetobacter nosocomialis and Acinetobacter junii Conferred by Acquisition of blaOXA-24/40 and Genetic Characterization of the Transmission Mechanism between Acinetobacter Genomic Species

[Abstract] Carbapenem resistance is increasing among Gram-negative bacteria, including the genus Acinetobacter. This study aimed to characterize, for the first time, the development of carbapenem resistance in clinical isolates of Acinetobacter junii and Acinetobacter nosocomialis conferred by the acquisition of a plasmid-borne blaOXA-24/40 gene and also to characterize the dissemination of this gene between species of Acinetobacter. Carbapenem-resistant A. nosocomialis HUAV-AN66 and A. junii HUAV-AJ77 strains were isolated in the Arnau de Vilanova Hospital (Spain). The genomes were sequenced, and in silico analysis were performed to characterize the genetic environment and the OXA-24/40 transmission mechanism. Antibiotic MICs were determined, and horizontal transfer assays were conducted to evaluate interspecies transmission of OXA-24/40. Carbapenems MICs obtained were ≥64 mg/L for HUAV-AN66 and HUAV-AJ77. Genome analysis revealed the presence in both strains of a new plasmid, designated pHUAV/OXA-24/40, harboring the carbapenem-resistance gene blaOXA-24/40 and flanked by sequences XerC/XerD. pHUAV/OXA-24/40 was successfully transferred from A. nosocomialis and A. junii to a carbapenem-susceptible A. baumannii strain, thus conferring carbapenem resistance. A second plasmid (pHUAV/AMG-R) was identified in both clinical isolates for the successful horizontal transfer of pHUAV/OXA-24/40. blaOXA-24/40-carrying plasmids of the GR12 group and showing high identity with pHUAV/OXA-24/40 were identified in at least 8 Acinetobacter species. In conclusion the carbapenemase OXA-24/40 is described for the first time in A. nosocomialis and A. junii. In both isolates the blaOXA-24/40 gene was located in the GR12 pHUAV/OXA-24/40 plasmid. GR12 plasmids are implicated in the dissemination and spread of carbapenem resistance among Acinetobacter species. IMPORTANCE Acinetobacter baumannii is one of the most relevant pathogens in terms of antibiotic resistance. The main resistance mechanisms are the carbapenem-hydrolyzing class D β-lactamases (CHDLs), especially OXA-23 and OXA-24/40. In addition to A. baumannii, there are other species within the genus Acinetobacter, which in general exhibit much lower resistance rates. In this work we characterize for the first time two clinical isolates of Acinetobacter nosocomialis and Acinetobacter junii, isolated in the same hospital, carrying the carbapenemase OXA-24/40 and displaying high resistance rates to carbapenems. By means of bioinformatics analysis we have also been able to characterize the mechanism by which this carbapenemase is horizontally transferred interspecies of Acinetobacter spp. The dissemination of carbapenemase OXA-24/40 between non-baumannii Acinetobacter species is concerning since it prevents the use of most β-lactam antibiotics in the fight against these resistant isolates. This work was supported by Projects PI17/01482 and PI20/01212 awarded to A.B. and PI18/00501 to G.B., all within in the National Plan for Scientific Research, Development and Technological Innovation 2013–2016 and funded by the ISCIII - General Subdirection of Assessment and Promotion of the Research-European Regional Development Fund (FEDER) “A way of making Europe.” The work was also supported by CIBERINF (CIBER de Enfermedades Infecciosas). Prevalence of Metabolic Syndrome and Association with Physical Activity and Frailty Status in Spanish Older Adults with Decreased Functional Capacity: A Cross-Sectional Study

    Get PDF
Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a cluster of medical conditions associated with several health disorders. MetS and frailty can be related to prolonged physical deconditioning. There is a need to know whether there is concordance between the different ways of diagnosing it and to know their prevalence in Spanish older adults. Thus, the aims of this study were to describe the prevalence of MetS; to analyse the concordance between different definitions to diagnose MetS; and to study the associations between MetS, frailty status, and physical activity (PA) in older adults with decreased functional capacity. This report is a cross-sectional study involving 110 Spanish older adults of ages ≥65 years with decreased functional capacity. Clinical criteria to diagnose MetS was defined by different expert groups. Anthropometric measurements, blood biochemical analysis, frailty status, functional capacity, and PA were assessed. The Kappa statistic was used to determine the agreement between the five MetS definitions used. Student’s t-test and the Pearson chi-square test were used to examine differences between sex, frailty, and PA groups. The sex-adjusted prevalence of MetS assessed by the National Cholesterol Education Program—Third Adult Treatment Panel was 39.4% in men and 32.5% in women. The International Diabetes Federation and the Harmonized definitions had the best agreement (k = 1.000). The highest odds ratios (ORs) of cardiometabolic risk factors to develop MetS were elevated triglycerides (37.5) and reduced high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (27.3). Central obesity and hypertension prevalence were significantly higher in the non-active group (70.7% and 26.8%, respectively), compared to the active group (50.0% and 7.7%, respectively). Moreover, the active group (OR = 0.85, 95% CI = 0.35, 2.04) and active women group (OR = 0.77, 95% CI = 0.27, 2.20) appeared to show a lower risk of developing this syndrome. MetS is highly prevalent in this sample and changes according to the definition used. It seems that sex and frailty do not influence the development of MetS. However, PA appears to decrease central obesity, hypertension, and the risk of developing MetS
