Nonparametric checks for count data models: an application to demand for health care in Spain

This paper presents model specification checking procedures for count data regression models which are consistent in the direction of nonparametric alternatives. The discussion is motivated in the context of a model of demand for health care in Spain. The parameters of the regression model are estimated by maximum likelihood based on Poisson and Negative Binomial specifications as well as by ordinary least squares and semiparametric generalized least squares. However, our interest is not only centered on the estimation ofthe regression parameters, but also the conditional probabilities of counts. Therefore, the specification of the conditional distribution function of counts is the main focus of attention. A useful preliminary diagnosis tool consists of comparing the conditional probabilities estimates by nonparametric regression and by maximum likelihood methods based on alternative models. We present formal specification procedures based on new developed testing methods for regression model checking. The test statistics are based on marked empirical processes which are not distribution free, but their critical values are well approximated by bootstrap. Such tests are valid for testing the functional form of the conditional mean and conditional probabilities resulting from alternative distributional specifications. In our health care demand model, the linear exponential regression model with a Negative Binomial seems to be appropiate for this data set

No cabe duda de que esta situación tiene repercusiones importantes en el proceso de aprendizaje. En el presente trabajo se pretende incidir sobre la motivación de los alumnos y su implicación en el proceso de aprendizaje, elemento imprescindible en la actualidad para lograr una progresiva adaptación al Espacio Europeo de Educación Superior

La leyenda negra contra España durante el Romanticismo inglés: las colecciones biográficas de Mary Hays

En este trabajo se analizan las referencias a España en dos colecciones biográficas de la escritora inglesa Mary Hays: Female Biography (1803) y Memoirs of Queens (1821), pues en ellas aparecen varios hechos históricos en los que se ha fundamentado la llamada Leyenda Negra, como la Inquisición, las persecuciones de protestantes o la sospechosa muerte del infante Don Carlos. Lo cierto es que las mujeres españolas en estos textos son pocas; sin embargo, en las diversas biografías también aparecen otros personajes históricos, como Carlos V y Felipe II, y puesto que estos dos monarcas gobernaban un gran imperio, a ellos iba dirigida la mayor parte de la propaganda antiespañola de su tiempo y también mucha de la posterior. No obstante, dada la época en la que se publicaron las colecciones de Hays, ciertas pinceladas románticas son asimismo observablesThis article will analyse the references involving Spain in two biographical collections by the English writer Mary Hays: Female Biography (1803) and Memoirs of Queens (1821), given that in these two texts there appear various historical events which are the main focus of the so called Black Legend, such as the Inquisition, the persecutions of Protestants and the suspicious death of the Infante Don Carlos. Indeed the Spanish women in these collections are scarce; however, in some of the biographies other Spanish historical figures also emerge, such as Charles V and Philip II, and since these two monarchs ruled a great empire, the greatest part of the anti- Spanish propaganda of their time and most of the subsequent one was addressed to them. Nevertheless, given the period of their publication, certain Romantic traces are also observable in Hays’s collection

A Gender Enclave. The Strong Women of the Old Testament in the Chapel of the Virgen de Guadalupe in the Descalzas Reales

En el presente artículo se pretende visibilizar y analizar el ciclo pictórico de la capilla de la Virgen de Guadalupe del monasterio de las Descalzas Reales, por ser una capilla creada por una mujer para mujeres. Además, el estudio se centrará en la importancia del programa dedicado a las mujeres fuertes del Antiguo Testamento, ya que es un tema poco frecuente en el Barroco español. En consecuencia, se estudiará la relevancia del monasterio como centro de poder femenino, así como la relevancia de las figuras de Sor Ana Dorotea, monja real y promotora de esta capilla mariana, ya que su personalidad y educación fueron motor indispensable para que se crease este grupo pictórico con la mujer como absoluta protagonista, y de Sebastián Herrera Barnuevo, la mano que ejecutó magistralmente la iconografía ideada por la clarisa descalzaThis article intends to visualize and analyze the pictorial program of the chapel of the Virgin of Guadalupe of the monastery of the Descalzas Reales, because it is a chapel created by a woman for women. In addition, the study will focus on the importance of the program dedicated to strong women of the Old Testament, as it is a rare subject in the Spanish Baroque. A didactic approach to the artist and activist Barbara Bodichon, 1827-1891

Este trabajo tiene su origen en la escasa presencia de mujeres en el currículo de Bachillerato de las asignaturas de ámbito histórico y artístico. Se propone por tanto la incorporación de al menos una mujer, la artista y activista inglesa Barbara Bodichon. Así mismo, su interesante vida y obra merecen admirarse y estudiarse en el aula. En este artículo se incluye el enfoque didáctico adoptado y una propuesta preliminar con materiales didácticos multimodales.The scarce presence of women in the curriculum of Upper Secondary Education in such subjects from the historic and artistic field, has lead us to propose the incorporation of at least a woman: the artist and activist Barbara Bodichon. Moreover, her interesting life and work deserve to be admired and explored in the classroom. Young Girls on the Move in Charlotte Smith’s Didactic Miscellany Collections

This paper analyses the didactic miscellany collections for young female readers by the English writer Charlotte Smith. In these texts, through dialogues and conversations, the young protagonists are seen to learn from their daily experiences of walking in the natural world. Smith’s texts also offer remarkable examples of girls on the move in another sense, in that some of the young female protagonists appear to be escaping from distressing family and financial circumstances, in search of better life opportunities
