Strong polarization of the residual nucleus in a heavy-ion induced transfer reaction

    No full text
A strong polarization of 20Ne levels has been observed in the 16O(16O, 12C)20Ne* reaction along an axis perpendicular to the reaction plane. This polarization differs from that reported in the (7Li, t) reaction, when the same nuclear levels were populated. D.W.B.A. calculations which fitted both angular distributions and polarization in the (7Li, t) reaction and which can also describe the (16O, 12C) angular distributions fail to reproduce the associated 20Ne* polarization

An Introduction to Nuclear Supersymmetry: a Unification Scheme for Nuclei

The main ideas behind nuclear supersymmetry are presented, starting from the basic concepts of symmetry and the methods of group theory in physics. We propose new, more stringent experimental tests that probe the supersymmetry classification in nuclei and point out that specific correlations should exist for particle transfer intensities among supersymmetric partners. We also discuss possible ways to generalize these ideas to cases where no dynamical symmetries are present. The combination of these theoretical and experimental studies may play a unifying role in nuclear phenomena.Comment: 40 pages, 11 figures, lecture notes `VIII Hispalensis International Summer School: Exotic Nuclear Physics', Oromana, Sevilla, Spain, June 9-21, 200

Penning trap mass measurements on (99-109)$Cd with ISOLTRAP and implications on the rp process

    Get PDF
Penning trap mass measurements on neutron-deficient Cd isotopes (99-109)Cd have been performed with the ISOLTRAP mass spectrometer at ISOLDE/CERN, all with relative mass uncertainties below 3*10^8. A new mass evaluation has been performed. The mass of 99Cd has been determined for the first time which extends the region of accurately known mass values towards the doubly magic nucleus 100Sn. The implication of the results on the reaction path of the rp process in stellar X-ray bursts is discussed. In particular, the uncertainty of the abundance and the overproduction created by the rp-process for the mass A = 99 is demonstrated by reducing the uncertainty of the proton-separation energy of 100In Sp(100In) by a factor of 2.5.Comment: 14 pages, 9 figure

Comparison of low--energy resonances in 15N(alpha,gamma)19F and 15O(alpha,gamma)19Ne and related uncertainties

A disagreement between two determinations of Gamma_alpha of the astro- physically relevant level at E_x=4.378 MeV in 19F has been stated in two recent papers by Wilmes et al. and de Oliveira et al. In this work the uncertainties of both papers are discussed in detail, and we adopt the value Gamma_alpha=(1.5^{+1.5}_{-0.8})10^-9eV for the 4.378 MeV state. In addition, the validity and the uncertainties of the usual approximations for mirror nuclei Gamma_gamma(19F) approx Gamma_gamma(19Ne), theta^2_alpha(19F) approx theta^2_alpha(19Ne) are discussed, together with the resulting uncertainties on the resonance strengths in 19Ne and on the 15O(alpha,gamma)19Ne rate.Comment: 9 pages, Latex, To appear in Phys.

A new look at nuclear supersymmetry though transfer experiments

Nuclear supersymmetry is reviewed and some of its applications and extensions are discussed, together with a proposal for new, more stringent and precise tests to probe the supersymmetry classification, in particular, correlations between nuclei that belong to the same supermultiplet. The combination of these theoretical and experimental studies may play a unifying role in nuclear phenomenaComment: 13 pages, 3 figures, 2 table
