Scaling realistic fire scenarios
A review is made of work on scale modeling in fire and presented from the experience of the author. Primarily, scale modeling in air is discussed but there is a brief discussion of a scale model with salt and fresh water for smoke movement. A complete set of dimensionless groups is presented for fire, then it is illustrated how selections were made for the partial scaling of specific fire scenarios. Studies have been motivated by basic research interests as well as for fire investigations. The dynamics of floorcovering fire spread in a corridor is studied to reveal many features of fire behavior and validation is made with full-scale. Smoke movement in a department store atrium is studied to reveal flaws in the fire suppression system. The challenge was to develop a water mist system that passed fire testing, and was systematically done using a scale model and confirmed at full-scale. Fire effects on steel structures were studied at various scales, and a related classroom project examined one floor of the World Trade Center collapse on September 9, 2001. Finally, scaling was examined for a fire development in a furnished bedroom, pushing the limits of modeling to its utmost but finding some success in illustrating very similar overall behavior

A lot has been achieved in the quest for a more inclusive education for people
with disabilities in Brazil, resulting in their access to higher education (BRASIL, 2012).
However, reaching the university is still proving to be a significant challenge. That is
partly due to the fact that less problematized areas still persist in teacher training when it
comes to these students: the teachers often do not see themselves in a position where
they can properly prepare them for a selective process, due to factors that vary from
little knowledge regarding the education of people with disabilities, to a lack of
resources at the schools. Considering those matters, this work focuses on the English
language test of the Exame Nacional do Ensino Médio (Enem) and on visual
impairment, having as its objective to analyze the perceptions of a blind student in a
preparatory English class at the Instituto dos Cegos da Paraíba Adalgisa Cunha
(ICPAC), as well as those of his teacher, who also acts as a reader in exams. It is in our
interest to discuss the impact of the English classes at the regular school and at ICPAC
in the student's preparation for the aforementioned exam, as well as to identify in which
way the work of as a reader influences the teacher's performance while supervising
interns in the context of the specialized school. In order to create a theoretical base for
this research, legal documents regarding inclusion at schools and Enem were utilized, as
well as other works focusing on readers (GUIMARÃES, 2009; SIMÕES, 2012),
training and performance of blind students' teachers (DANTAS, 2014a; QUINTIERE,
2017) and the trajectory of people with disabilities in Brazil (SASSAKI, 2011;
DANTAS, 2014b). A qualitative-interpretative research (BORTONI-RICARDO, 2008)
took place, in which both student and teacher-reader were interviewed about their
experiences. The analysis of the texts of the interviews pointed to the importance of the
specialized school, both regarding the learning process of blind students and the teacher
training. Those points have implications for teacher training and inclusion, leading to
the building of more knowledge on the topic of inclusive education in general,
especially regarding the preparation of visually impaired students for selective exams
and the teacher and reader's roles in that process. Our research also points out the need
to explore the role of reader further, as well as the impact of those discussions on
teacher training.
Considerando essas
Numerical investigation of the fatal 1985 Manchester Airport B737 fire
In this paper, fire and evacuation computer simulations are used to reconstruct the 1985 Manchester Airport B737 fire that resulted in the loss of 55 lives. First the actual fire and evacuation are reconstructed. Secondly, the impact of exit opening times and external wind on the fire and evacuation are investigated. Finally, the potential benefit offered by modern materials is evaluated. The results suggest that the number of fatalities could have been reduced by 87% had the forward right exit not malfunctioned and by 36% had the right over-wing exit been opened without delay. Furthermore, given the fuel pool size and location, a critical wind speed of 1.5 m/s is necessary to cause the fire plume to lean onto the fuselage eventually resulting in fuselage burn-through. Finally, it is suggested that the use of modern cabin materials could have made a significant difference to the fire development and survivability
Amor. Discurso
PUNIÇÃO CORPORAL JUDICIAL NOS ESTADOS UNIDOS? LIÇÕES DA LEI CRIMINAL ISLÃMICA PARA CURAR AS DOENÇAS DO ENCARCERAMENTO DE MASSA
At year-end 2012, the entire adult correctional population in the U.S. (consisting of individuals on probation, parole, or in prison or jail) consists of 6.94 million people, equivalent to about 1 in 35 U.S. adults. Unsurprisingly, these numbers represent the highest incarceration rate in the world. In addition to these high numbers, the U.S. system of incarceration is both: 1) expensive (due to the large state and federal expenditures required); and 2) lacking in efficacy. The purpose of this article, therefore, is to provide taxpayers and policymakers with information about the objective policy behind judicial corporal punish- ment and how it could help to significantly reduce the huge economic and social costs which incarceration as a preferred form of criminal punishment has levied on our society. This will be achieved in four Parts. Part II examines the five universal purposes of punishment and offers a working definition of judicial corporal punishment. Part II also provides a comparative analysis of judicial corporal punishment in the U.S. and Islamic legal systems. Next, Part III begins the authors’ independent subjective analysis, first conceding the draw- backs of judicial corporal punishment as implemented in Islamic criminal law, then coming to the conclusion that, despite the drawbacks, judicial corporal punishment as implemented in Islamic criminal law is superior to the status quo of incarceration in the U.S. Part III’s conclusion will be supported by three main arguments showing that judicial corporal punishment as implemented in Islamic criminal law is more effective, less costly, and more compassionate than the status quo of incarceration.
Fire Safety in High-rise Buildings, Lessons Learned from the WTC
This paper addresses the tragic events of September 11th, 2001. Provides a brief background on the philosophy of fire protection for high-rise buildings and the behavior of a fire within a compartment. It further describes the events and the particular scenario corresponding to the World Trade Center. No attempt is made of providing a description of what caused the collapse but the objective is more to illustrate the characteristics of the fire and highlight the possible uncertainties. The paper concludes with a list of lessons learned and questions yet to be answer but fundamentally, with a plea for a detailed analysis of this event and a subsequent plan for fire research. Understanding the mechanisms that led to the collapse of the World Trade Center will enable engineers to provide a safer environment for the users of similar and other types of buildings but also for the firemen that sacrifice their lives trying to save the lives of other people
Emulation of Condensed Fuel Flames Using a Burning Rate Emulator (BRE) in Microgravity
The Burning Rate Emulator (BRE) is a gaseous fuel burner developed to emulate the burning of condensed phase fuels. The current study details several tests at the NASA Glenn 5-s drop facility to test the BRE technique in microgravity conditions. The tests are conducted for two burner diameters, 25 mm and 50 mm respectively, with methane and ethylene as the fuels. The ambient pressure, oxygen content and fuel flow rate are additional parameters. The microgravity results exhibit a nominally hemispherical flame with decelerating growth and quasi-steady heat flux after about 5 seconds. The BRE burner was evaluated with a transient analysis to assess the extent of steady-state achieved. The burning rate and flame height recorded at the end of the drop are correlated using two steady-state purely diffusive models. A higher burning rate for the bigger burner as compared to theory indicates the significance of gas radiation. The effect of the ambient pressure and oxygen concentration on the heat of gasification are also examined
