Breast cancer is an emotive cancer. It is a disease that affects a visible sexual organ and it is the commonest single cause of death of women between 40 and 60 years of age. Nevertheless, this type of cancer was infrequently depicted in art paintings. In this article the themes from the breast cancer in famous art paintings are discussed

The basic biology of erbB-2 and its participation in colorectal cancers

    Get PDF
ErbB-2 is one of Tour cell surface growth factor receptors involved in transmission of signals controlling normal cell growth and differentiation. A range of growth factors serve as ligands, but none is specific for the ErbB-2 receptor. Ligand binding to ErbB-1, ErbB-3 and ErbB-4 induces rapid receptor dimerization, with a marked preference for ErbB-2 as a dimer partner. When ErbB-2 is overexpressed multiple ErbB-2 heterodimers are formed and cell signalling is stronger, resulting in enhanced responsiveness to growth factors and malignant growth. This explains why ErbB-2 overexpression is an indicator of poor prognosis in colorectal cancers and may be predictive of response to treatment. ErbB-2 is a highly specific and promising target for new colon cancer treatments.Zadanie pt. „Digitalizacja i udostępnienie w Cyfrowym Repozytorium Uniwersytetu Łódzkiego kolekcji czasopism naukowych wydawanych przez Uniwersytet Łódzki” nr 885/P-DUN/2014 dofinansowane zostało ze środków MNiSW w ramach działalności upowszechniającej naukę

An algebraic model for rational SO(3)-spectra

Greenlees established an equivalence of categories between the homotopy category of rational SO(3)-spectra and the derived category DA(SO(3)) of a certain abelian category. In this paper we lift this equivalence of homotopy categories to the level of Quillen equivalences of model categories. Methods used in this paper provide the first step towards obtaining an algebraic model for the toral part of rational G-spectra, for any compact Lie group G

István, a király: Rock-Opera As an Expression of Hungarian National Identity

    Get PDF
The movie Istvàn, a kiràly presents themes which are not only universal, but also crucial for the process of building Hungarian national identity, such as the myth of origin, the insoluble conflict between the past and present, Christianity, and the valour of the fight for freedom and respect for tradition. These motifs make Istvàn, a kiràly worth watching not only for Hungarians, but also for all non-Hungarians who desire to understand the culture of Hungary. For them, Istvàn, a kiràly will be an invaluable insight into the Hungarian mind. This book was financially supported by the National Programme for the Development of Humanities: project “Cinema: Intercultural Perspective. Post-error brain activity correlates with incidental memory for negative words

The present study had three main objectives. First, we aimed to evaluate whether short-duration affective states induced by negative and positive words can lead to increased error-monitoring activity relative to a neutral task condition. Second, we intended to determine whether such an enhancement is limited to words of specific valence or is a general response to arousing material. Third, we wanted to assess whether post-error brain activity is associated with incidental memory for negative and/or positive words. Participants performed an emotional stop-signal task that required response inhibition to negative, positive or neutral nouns while EEG was recorded. Immediately after the completion of the task, they were instructed to recall as many of the presented words as they could in an unexpected free recall test. We observed significantly greater brain activity in the error-positivity (Pe) time window in both negative and positive trials. The error-related negativity amplitudes were comparable in both the neutral and emotional arousing trials, regardless of their valence. Regarding behavior, increased processing of emotional words was reflected in better incidental recall. Importantly, the memory performance for negative words was positively correlated with the Pe amplitude, particularly in the negative condition. The source localization analysis revealed that the subsequent memory recall for negative words was associated with widespread bilateral brain activity in the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex and in the medial frontal gyrus, which was registered in the Pe time window during negative trials. The present study has several important conclusions. First, it indicates that the emotional enhancement of error monitoring, as reflected by the Pe amplitude, may be induced by stimuli with symbolic, ontogenetically learned emotional significance. Second, it indicates that the emotion-related enhancement of the Pe occurs across both negative and positive conditions, thus it is preferentially driven by the arousal content of an affective stimuli. Third, our findings suggest that enhanced error monitoring and facilitated recall of negative words may both reflect responsivity to negative events. More speculatively, they can also indicate that post-error activity of the medial prefrontal cortex may selectively support encoding for negative stimuli and contribute to their privileged access to memory

Single-phase feeding and compensatory growth in growing and finishing pigs (OK-Net Ecofeed Practice Abstract)

    • Limit the supply of essential amino acids during early growth and utilise the pigs’ capacity to fully compensate for the restriction by increased protein retention and faster growth during later growth phases. • Crude protein and lysine contents can be substantially reduced, below common standards (i.e. crude protein to 16.5% and digestible lysine between 0.70-0.80 g standardised ileal digestible (SID) lysine/MJ NE), in well-balanced diets. • A reduction in crude protein content, from 15.5 to 14.5 g SID/g SID lysine can lower the nitrogen output by approximately 10%. • Formulate diets on a digestible amino acid basis rather than on a total amino acid or crude protein basis. • High-quality protein feed ingredients such as faba beans, peas, oil seed-, dairy- and cereal-based by-products, aquatic resources, etc., or a combination of them, can be used. • At the pig level, this practice can reduce soya bean cake utilisation (14%) and increase pea utilisation (22%). • Careful follow-up of the pigs' feed consumption, growth and health status is recommended

This text is a pre-publication format made available for the University of Lodz online repository with the permission of the publisher, Éditions québécoises de l’oeuvre. This paper discusses the circulation of Edward W. Said’s concepts in Eastern Europe. In his text “Traveling Theory” Said examines intercultural translations of Western ideas for use in new historical contexts. The phenomenon of traveling applies as well to Said’s notion of Orientalism. Many researchers of Eastern Europe have applied Said’s concept to analyze post-communist societies. The cultural translation has led both to creative interpretations of Said’s thought and to an ideological voice trapped in the post-communist discourse of modernization. This paper was supported by the Polish Ministry of Science and Higher Education through a grant to young scholars research

Background: Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia is a degenerative process that decreased testosterone and increased dihydrotestosterone. Prostate hyperplasia occurs due to constringency of the lumen, caused urinary retention. One of the surgical procedures performed is the TURP operation followed by Continuous Bladder Irrigation using 0.9% NaCl liquid and sterile water. This procedure caused TURP syndrome. Objective: To find out the difference of irrigation fluid between 0.9% NaCl and sterile water against transurethral resection of prostate syndrome (TURP). Method: Quantitative research, analytic observational research design using secondary data. The population in this study was postoperative TURP patients with irrigation using 0.9% NaCl fluid and sterile water from 2015 until June 2019. Sampling technique using purposive sampling with the total respondents was 72 people, 36 respondents for the NaCl 0, 9% group and 36 respondents for the sterile water group. Results: This study results that 72 post-operative TURP respondents aged over 71 years as many as 38 people (52.8%), aged 50-70 years as many as 34 people (47.2%). The duration of operation of 72 respondents was 58 people (80.6%), the time required was less than 1 hour, as many as 14 respondents (19.4%) the time spent on TURP operations was more than 1 hour. In postoperative TURP patients used NaCl irrigation fluid 0.9% of 36 respondents had TURP syndrome as many as 22 people (61.1%), hadn’t TURP syndrome as many as 8 people (22.2%), moderate TURP syndrome as much 5 people (13.9%) and high TURP syndrome were 1 person (2.8%). The post-operative TURP patients used sterile water from 36 respondents did not caused TURP syndrome as many as 18 people (50%), mild TURP syndrome 13 people (36.1%), and moderate TURP syndrome as many as 5 people (13.9%)
