    Effect of Pre-marketing Management Practices on Shrink Loss in Lambs

    Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects of three common lamb pre-marketing management practices on live weight shrink loss. Additionally a producer survey was conducted to assess current marketing practices in the North Central region of the US. In these experiments, Exp. 1 (feeder lambs) and 2 (finished lambs), 60 commercial Polypay lambs (Exp. 1: 37.65 ± 0.30 kg of BW; Exp. 2: 52.56 ± 0.14 kg of BW) were allocated for each experiment to 3 treatment groups (n=20 lambs) in a 3 x 3 Latin square design. Treatments were the pre-marketing practices: original pen (ORG), transition pen (TRANS), and overnight stand pen (ONS). During the study, lambs had ad libitum access to a lamb diet (ORG and TRANS) or hay (ONS) and fresh water. Overnight stand lambs experienced greater overall shrink loss for both feeder (P ≤ 0.05) and finished (P ≤ 0.05) lambs compared to the other treatments, ORG and TRANS. During the management phase in both experiments, dietary intake for ONS was lower (P ≤ 0.05) than both ORG and TRANS treatment lambs. Water intake was lower for ONS (Exp. 1 = 0.70 L, P ≤ 0.05; Exp. 2 = 1.42 L, P = 0.154) while TRANS lambs recorded the numerical greater water intake for both experiments (Exp. 1 = 1.36 L, P ≤ 0.05; Exp. 2 = 2.18 L, P = 0.154). A 16 question sheep producer survey was conducted electronically to gain knowledge of the demographics associated with pre-marketing practices in lambs from a 12-state area in the North Central Region of the US. The survey yielded responses from 165 producers. Only 50% of producers indicated that a public auction was their primary marketing choice with the balance of the producers using other available marketing options such as a buying station, direct to packer, or direct to consumer. Over 80% of producers indicated they had no data or knowledge of the degree of lamb shrink loss through the marketing phase. The survey results show that 45% of producers utilize pre-marketing practices including sorting and change of diet

    Monte Carlo study of linear chain submonolayer structures.Application to Li/W(112)

    The lattice gas model for adsorption of alkaline elements on W(112) surface is studied by Monte Carlo simulations. The model includes dipole--dipole interaction as well as long-range indirect interaction. The numerical results show that truncation of the indirect interaction even at 200A˚\AA may change a phase diagram, i.e., new phases containing domain walls might occur. It is demonstrated that a defected phase can exist at high temperatures even if it is not stable at T=0. The phase diagram for Li/W(112) is constructed and long periodic chain structures (9*1), (6*1), (4*1), (3*1), and (2*1) are found to be stable at low temperatures.     Phylogenomic study of Burkholderia glathei-like organisms, proposal of 13 novel Burkholderia species and emended descriptions of Burkholderia sordidicola, Burkholderia zhejiangensis, and Burkholderia grimmiae

    Partial gyrB gene sequence analysis of 17 isolates from human and environmental sources revealed 13 clusters of strains and identified them as Burkholderia glathei Glade (BGC) bacteria. The taxonomic status of these clusters was examined by whole-genome sequence analysis, determination of the G+C content, whole-cell fatty acid analysis and biochemical characterization. The whole-genome sequence-based phylogeny was assessed using the Genome Blast Distance Phylogeny (GBDP) method and an extended multilocus sequence analysis (MLSA) approach. The results demonstrated that these 17 BGC isolates represented 13 novel Burkholderia species that could be distinguished by both genotypic and phenotypic characteristics. BGC strains exhibited a broad metabolic versatility and developed beneficial, symbiotic, and pathogenic interactions with different hosts. Our data also confirmed that there is no phylogenetic subdivision in the genus Burkholderia that distinguishes beneficial from pathogenic strains. We therefore propose to formally classify the 13 novel BGC Burkholderia species as Burkholderia arvi sp. nov. (type strain LMG 29317(T) = CCUG 68412(T)), Burkholderia hypogeia sp. nov. (type strain LMG 29322(T) = CCUG 68407(T)), Burkholderia ptereochthonis sp. nov. (type strain LMG 29326(T) = CCUG 68403(T)), Burkholderia glebae sp. nov. (type strain LMG 29325(T) = CCUG 68404(T)), Burkholderia pedi sp. nov. (type strain LMG 29323(T) = CCUG 68406(T)), Burkholderia arationis sp. nov. (type strain LMG 29324(T) = CCUG 68405(T)), Burkholderia fortuita sp. nov. (type strain LMG 29320(T) = CCUG 68409(T)), Burkholderia temeraria sp. nov. (type strain LMG 29319(T) = CCUG 68410(T)), Burkholderia calidae sp. nov. (type strain LMG 29321(T) = CCUG 68408(T)), Burkholderia concitans sp. nov. (type strain LMG 29315(T) = CCUG 68414(T)), Burkholderia turbans sp. nov. (type strain LMG 29316(T) = CCUG 68413(T)), Burkholderia catudaia sp. nov. (type strain LMG 29318(T) = CCUG 68411(T)) and Burkholderia peredens sp. nov. (type strain LMG 29314(T) = CCUG 68415(T)). Furthermore, we present emended descriptions of the species Burkholderia sordidicola, Burkholderia zhejlangensis and Burkholderia grimmiae. The GenBank/EMBUDDBJ accession numbers for the 16S rRNA and gyrB gene sequences determined in this study are LT158612-LT158624 and LT158625-LT1158641, respectively

    Compassion fatigue among nurses working with older adults

    Nurses who care for older patients are exposed to significant suffering and loss that can lead to the development of compassion fatigue and burnout. An exploratory descriptive study was conducted to assess compassion fatigue, burnout, and compassion satisfaction in a group of 42 nurses who worked on a geriatric medicine unit using the Professional Quality of Life (ProQOL) compassion satisfaction and compassion fatigue 5 scale. Nurses reported average levels of compassion fatigue, burnout, and compassion satisfaction. However, new nurses reported higher levels of compassion fatigue (p < .01) and burnout (p = .02) than experienced nurses. Findings suggest the need to purposely build a supportive environment that focuses on new nurses to reduce compassion fatigue and burnout while enhancing compassion satisfaction

    TYGS is an automated high-throughput platform for state-of-the-art genome-based taxonomy

    Microbial taxonomy is increasingly influenced by genome-based computational methods. Yet such analyses can be complex and require expert knowledge. Here we introduce TYGS, the Type (Strain) Genome Server, a user-friendly high-throughput web server for genome-based prokaryote taxonomy, connected to a large, continuously growing database of genomic, taxonomic and nomenclatural information. It infers genome-scale phylogenies and state-of-the-art estimates for species and subspecies boundaries from user-defined and automatically determined closest type genome sequences. TYGS also provides comprehensive access to nomenclature, synonymy and associated taxonomic literature. Clinically important examples demonstrate how TYGS can yield new insights into microbial classification, such as evidence for a species-level separation of previously proposed subspecies of Salmonella enterica. TYGS is an integrated approach for the classification of microbes that unlocks novel scientific approaches to microbiologists worldwide and is particularly helpful for the rapidly expanding field of genome-based taxonomic descriptions of new genera, species or subspecies
