Semi-spectral Chebyshev method in Quantum Mechanics
Traditionally, finite differences and finite element methods have been by
many regarded as the basic tools for obtaining numerical solutions in a variety
of quantum mechanical problems emerging in atomic, nuclear and particle
physics, astrophysics, quantum chemistry, etc. In recent years, however, an
alternative technique based on the semi-spectral methods has focused
considerable attention. The purpose of this work is first to provide the
necessary tools and subsequently examine the efficiency of this method in
quantum mechanical applications. Restricting our interest to time independent
two-body problems, we obtained the continuous and discrete spectrum solutions
of the underlying Schroedinger or Lippmann-Schwinger equations in both, the
coordinate and momentum space. In all of the numerically studied examples we
had no difficulty in achieving the machine accuracy and the semi-spectral
method showed exponential convergence combined with excellent numerical
stability.Comment: RevTeX, 12 EPS figure
DNA Torsional Solitons in Presence of localized Inhomogeneities
In the present paper we investigate the influence of inhomogeneities in the
dynamics and stability of DNA open states, modeled as propagating solitons in
the spirit of a Generalized Yakushevish Model. It is a direct consecuence of
our model that there exists a critical distance between the soliton's center of
mass and the inhomogeneity at which the interaction between them can change the
stability of the open state.Furtherly from this results was derived a
renormalized potential funtion.Comment: RevTex, 13 pages, 3 figures, final versio
Barycenter and maximum likelihood
We refine recent existence and uniqueness results, for the barycenter of points at infinity of Hadamard manifolds, to measures on the sphere at infinity of symmetric spaces of non compact type and, more specifically, to measures concentrated on single orbits. The barycenter will be interpreted as the maximum likelihood estimate (MLE) of generalized Cauchy distributions on Furstenberg boundaries. As a spin-off, a new proof of the general Knight–Meyer characterization theorem will be given

Protective effect of urodilatin (URO) or ANP against an acetylcholine(ACH)-induced bronchoconstriction in the rat in vivo: Abstract
Inhaled ANP inhibits histamine induced bronchoconstriction in man. We compared the protective effect of equimolar doses of intravenous ANP and URO against a bronchoconstriction induced by ACH-inhalation in 46 anaesthetized intubated spontaneously breathing Wistar-rats. The animals received an intravenous infusion of 0.5 ml ANP, URO or vehicle (NaCl) for 10 min. During the infusion period an ACH-challenge test was started after 5 min. Using whole-bodyplethysmography typical spontaneous respiratory function parameters were recorded under steady state conditions before the infusion and before and at the of the ACH-challenge. Forced parameters (volume-time and flow-volume relation) were measured in hyperventilation-induced apnoe after the ACH-challenge and included e.g. FVC, FEV0.1, FEV0.2, PEF, MMEF, FEF75, FEF50 and FEF25. ACH induced a significant bronchoconstriction without any significant difference between the treatment groups regarding the spontaneous breathing and forced volume-time relation parameters. The more sensitive flow-volume curve, however, showed a significant protective effect of 11.4 and 22.8 pmol/kg/min (40 and 80 ng/kg/min) URO compared to the control group while the infusion of ANP was without any significant influence in all three dose groups. Heart rate was controlled by ECG and did not change significantly during the infusion period before and at the end of the ACH-challenge. It is concluded that intravenous URO but not ANP shows a significant protective effect against ACH-induced bronchoconstriction in rats in vivo
