    That’s more like they know me as a person": one primary pre-service teacher’s stories of her personal and ‘professional’ digital practices

    In contributing to debates about how student-teachers might draw from personal experience in addressing digital literacy in the classroom, this paper explores the stories that one primary student-teacher told of her digital practices during a larger study of the role of digital literacy in student-teachers' lives. The paper investigates the 'recognition work' this student-teacher did as she aligned herself with different discourses and notes how themes of 'control' and 'professionalism' seemed to pattern her stories of informal and formal practices both within and beyond her professional education. The paper calls for further research into how student-teachers perceive the relevance of their personal experience to their professional role and argues for encouraging pre-service and practising teachers to tell stories of their digital practices and reflect upon the discourses which frame them

    Investigating children’s interactions around digital texts in classrooms : how are these framed and what counts?

    This article argues that, in informing our understanding of the possibilities and challenges associated with new technologies in educational contexts, we need to explore what counts to children when using digital texts in classrooms, and what children think counts for their teachers. It suggests that such insights can be gained by investigating children's interactions around these texts and, drawing on Goffman's work, considering how these are framed. This is illustrated using examples from a study of classroom digital literacy events. The article suggests that it is important to consider how frames disrupt, intersect with and over-layer each other

    Recycling oriented vertical vibratory separation of copper and polypropylene particles

    Vibration has been employed in various engineering processes for material handling. The famous Brazil nut effect, large particles tend to rise to the top under vibration, initiates various research about vibration induced particle segregation. Particle size and density are two determining factors for their behaviour under vibration. Previous research in University of Nottingham proves vertical vibratory separation to be a promising environmental friendly mechanical separation method for recycling metallic fraction from shredded Waste Electric and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) stream. A pilot scale thin cell vibratory separator has been developed to investigate the potential for WEEE recycling applications. Shredded copper and polypropylene particles have been chosen to mimic metallic and non-metallic fractions in WEEE. Vibratory separation experiment with controlled environment and addition of solid lubricant are presented in this paper. The result demonstrates the effect of relative humidity and solid lubricant on improving flowability of granular system hence successful vibratory separation. The proposed mechanisms for the presence of moisture and solid lubricant are lubricant effect and elimination of static electricity
