Determining when it is safe for an athlete to return-to-play (RTP) after sustaining a concussion is a primary concern for healthcare professionals. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between sport-related concussion and subsequent occurrence of lower extremity musculoskeletal injury in collegiate athletes. This study also aimed to establish if a relationship exists between the length of recovery-time needed by an athlete prior to returning to play after a concussion and risk of lower extremity musculoskeletal injury. We also examined the contribution that sex may have on recovery time and lower extremity musculoskeletal risk after a concussion. A retrospective, matched-cohort study design utilizing a review of medical records of collegiate athletes from the past ten years was conducted. A total of 164, athletes across 10 different sports were included in this study. Eighty-two concussed athletes (58 male, 24 female) were each randomly matched with one non-concussed athlete by sex, sport, position, calendar year, and body mass index (BMI). Data pertaining to any lower extremity musculoskeletal injury that had occurred, in the 90-day period prior to the concussed subjects’ concussion and in the subsequent 180-day period after the concussed athlete RTP, was collected and analyzed for each concussed athlete and their matched control. The results of this study revealed that concussed athletes were at increased risk of future lower extremity musculoskeletal injury after RTP following a concussion. Sixty-two percent of concussed athletes selected for this study sustained a lower extremity musculoskeletal injury within 180 days after RTP following their concussion as compared to 26% of matched control athletes. These results indicate that the odds for an athlete with history of concussion, sustaining a lowering extremity musculoskeletal injury after RTP following a concussion is 7.37 greater than an athlete with no history of concussion. The number of days it took for athletes to RTP after a concussion was not statistically different in athletes who sustained a subsequent lower extremity musculoskeletal injury and those who did not. Although not statistically significant, female athletes demonstrated longer concussion recovery times and a greater incidence of lower extremity musculoskeletal injury following a concussion

This document presents the computing infrastructure deployed in the context of StratusLab project, details the configuration of the computing resources used and the commitments made from the project partners to contribute with computing resources in the project. During the first months of operation this infrastructure has already been significantly exploited to deliver the first results towards the project's goals. The OpenNebula virtual management software has been used to install private clouds on different OS platforms. Two pre-production grid sites have been deployed in the private cloud and are used to test the implications of providing grid services in cloud environments. Experience from the deployment and operation of the above sites will help us identify the required tools and procedures for offering grid production sites over computing clouds. Finally the document presents related work, relevant to infrastructure operations, taking place in other projects and initiatives

Plasticity of fruit and oil traits in olive among diferent environments

Olive is a long-living perennial species with a wide geographical distribution, showing a large genetic and phenotypic variation in its growing area. There is an urgent need to uncover how olive phenotypic traits and plasticity can change regardless of the genetic background. A two-year study was conducted, based on the analysis of fruit and oil traits of 113 cultivars from fve germplasm collections established in Mediterranean Basin countries and Argentina. Fruit and oil traits plasticity, broad‐sense heritability and genotype by environment interaction were estimated. From variance and heritability analyses, it was shown that fruit fresh weight was mainly under genetic control, whereas oleic/(palmitic+linoleic) acids ratio was regulated by the environment and genotype by environment interaction had the major efect on oil content. Among the studied cultivars, diferent level of stability was observed, which allowed ranking the cultivars based on their plasticity for oil traits. High thermal amplitude, the diference of low and high year values of temperature, negatively afected the oil content and the oleic acid percentage. Information derived from this work will help to direct the selection of cultivars with the highest global ftness averaged over the environments rather than the highest ftness in each environment separately.EEA San JuanFil: Mousavi, Soraya. Dynamic IP routing and quality-of-service support in mobile multimedia ad hoc networks.

One feature that distinguishes a mobile ad hoc network (MANET) from traditional wired networks is that all hosts are allowed to move freely without the need for static access points. This distinct feature, however, presents a great challenge to the design of the routing scheme and the support of multimedia services, since the link quality and the network topology may be fast changing as hosts roam around. This dissertation investigates three major areas in mobile ad hoc networks: (a) Dynamic IP routing in highly mobile environments; (b) Quality-of-Service (QoS) Routing support; and (c) Integration of ad hoc networks with wide area mobile networks. Dynamic routing in MANETs is a multi-objective task that presents stringent requirements. These requirements include: high accuracy, low overhead, robust path maintenance, scalability, in terms of network control overhead, as the network population grows, etc. A new routing approach for routing in ad hoc wireless networks, called Relative Distance Micro-Discovery Ad Hoc Routing (RDMAR) is proposed. RDMAR is an on-demand protocol that reactively discovers and repairs routes within a local region of the network. As demonstrated through simulations, the localisation of routing control messaging serves to minimise communication overhead and overall network congestion. The protocol has been an IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force) candidate since September 1999. To support bandwidth (QoS) sensitive multimedia applications, a new set of slot reservation and distributed channel assignment protocols for mobile ad hoc networks, called MBCA (Minimum Blocking Channel Assignment) and BRCA (Bandwidth Reallocation Channel Assignment), is presented. A fundamental feature of the proposed channel assignment algorithms is that they make use of the congestion states (i.e., available and used bandwidth) of the network. The performance results assert that a basic dynamic channel assignment (DCA) scheme can be significantly improved using the proposed MBCA and BRCA heuristics. Finally, a generic platform for accommodating relaying in the GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) cellular network is presented. A prototype network layer system model tailored for operation within a GSM-MANET integrated system has been developed for the adaptive routing of calls in the presence of shadowing. The proposed system model is intended to support seamless communication by handing over (rerouting) a suffering call to another mobile terminal, which lies in a more advantageous position and can help as intermediate node of communication between the mobile terminal and base station

    Eye diseases in the Bible

From the whole project we come to some conclusions: - Many of the ophthalmic diseases described in the Bible stand today as they are or are named differently. - A therapeutical treatment with the means of that époque was attempted with medicine like - eye drops (natural, chemical, animal) physiotherapy, compresses, washing. In many cases, a miraculous treatment is attempted with the invocation of the divine therapeutic force. - In the old and new testament, the eye has a spiritual meaning as the lamp of the body and as the potential with which may looks up to God and his fellow may in their true dimension.[…] Online media practices: the relationship between social media and website traffic indicators

    No full text
The aim of the current dissertation is to capture trends in online media practices, with an emphasis on social media, and create models to predict media website traffic, in order to serve as tools for evaluating the practices followed by journalists. The conclusions of the dissertation are part of the scientific discussion on the use of web 2.0 tools by the media and the relationship between legacy media and social media. The study records the historical development of web 2.0 tools used by Greek media, investigates the degree of social media exploitation from legacy media as well as the dependence or reinforcement of the latter from the first, while responding to the need of the development of new indicators to evaluate journalistic practices. The present research is not limited to a sample of media, but maps web practices by all Greek television and radio stations, as well as daily newspapers of national, regional and local circulation, while it also studies the largest Greek online media. The research includes a bibliographic review of scientific books, international journals and internet sources, and also primary, empirical content analysis surveys on Greek media websites and their official social media pages and accounts. It is one of the few large-scale surveys to correlate social media indicators with website traffic data, as well as one of the few, if not the only, attempts to create models for predicting media website traffic, based on social media indicators.Στόχος της παρούσας διατριβής είναι η αποτύπωση των τάσεων στις διαδικτυακέςπρακτικές που ακολουθούν τα μέσα ενημέρωσης, δίνοντας έμφαση στα μέσακοινωνικής δικτύωσης, καθώς και η δημιουργία μοντέλων πρόβλεψης τηςεπισκεψιμότητας των δικτυακών τόπων των μέσων ενημέρωσης, ώστε ναλειτουργήσουν ως εργαλεία για την αξιολόγηση των ακολουθούμενων πρακτικών.
