Radio Continuum Jet in NGC 7479
The barred galaxy NGC 7479 hosts a remarkable jet-like radio continuum
feature: bright, 12-kpc long in projection, and hosting an aligned magnetic
field. The degree of polarization is 6%-8% along the jet, and remarkably
constant, which is consistent with helical field models. The radio brightness
of the jet suggests strong interaction with the ISM and hence a location near
the disk plane. We observed NGC 7479 at four wavelengths with the VLA and
Effelsberg radio telescopes. The equipartition strength is 35-40 micro-G for
the total and >10 micro-G for the ordered magnetic field in the jet. The jet
acts as a bright, polarized background. Faraday rotation between 3.5 and 6 cm
and depolarization between 6 and 22 cm can be explained by magneto-ionic gas in
front of the jet, with thermal electron densities of ~0.06 cm**(-3) in the bar
and ~0.03 cm**(-3) outside the bar. The regular magnetic field along the bar
points toward the nucleus on both sides. The regular field in the disk reveals
multiple reversals, probably consisting of field loops stretched by a shearing
gas flow in the bar. The projection of the jet bending in the sky plane is in
the sense opposite to that of the underlying stellar and gaseous spiral
structure. The bending in 3-D is most easily explained as a precessing jet,
with an age less than 10**6 years. Our observations are consistent with very
recent triggering, possibly by a minor merger. NGC 7479 provides a unique
opportunity to study interaction-triggered 15-kpc scale radio jets within a
spiral galaxy.Comment: 18 pages, 21 figures, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical

Continuum Surface Energy from a Lattice Model
We investigate connections between the continuum and atomistic descriptions
of deformable crystals, using certain interesting results from number theory.
The energy of a deformed crystal is calculated in the context of a lattice
model with general binary interactions in two dimensions. A new bond counting
approach is used, which reduces the problem to the lattice point problem of
number theory. The main contribution is an explicit formula for the surface
energy density as a function of the deformation gradient and boundary normal.
The result is valid for a large class of domains, including faceted (polygonal)
shapes and regions with piecewise smooth boundaries.Comment: V. 1: 10 pages, no fig's. V 2: 23 pages, no figures. Misprints

Exploring the adoption of precision agricultural technologies: a cross regional study of EU farmers
Precision agricultural technologies (PATs) allow more detailed management of in-field variability. Policy and advisory communities have championed PATs as a route to preserving natural capital whilst increasing productivity from agricultural land. A range of PATs are currently available for the agricultural producer but uptake varies by the type of technology and region. Whereas most studies on uptake have focused on US or Australia we empirically examine uptake of machine guidance (MG) and variable rate nitrogen technologies (VRNT) within European farming systems. Using primary information from 971 arable crop growers across five countries: Belgium, Germany, Greece, the Netherlands and the UK, a multilevel random intercept regression estimated a) the differences between adoption and non-adoption and b) the differences between VRNT and MG adoption. We find, aside from size and income differences, which reflect the economic cost barrier to adoption, an attitudinal difference, in terms of optimism towards the technology's economic return leading to more probability of uptake. Moreover innovative and information seeking behaviour also proved significant when upgrading from machine guidance to variable rate technologies. Subsidy and taxation were considered positive drivers of uptake within the community. However, results suggest that more indirect interventions, such as informational support to counteract industry bias, and demonstration to prove the viability of economic return may be effective at meeting land manager and policy expectations towards PATs
Bio-psycho-social factors’ associations with brain age: a large-scale UK Biobank diffusion study of 35,749 participants
Brain age refers to age predicted by brain features. Brain age has previously been associated with various health and disease outcomes and suggested as a potential biomarker of general health. Few previous studies have systematically assessed brain age variability derived from single and multi-shell diffusion magnetic resonance imaging data. Here, we present multivariate models of brain age derived from various diffusion approaches and how they relate to bio-psycho-social variables within the domains of sociodemographic, cognitive, life-satisfaction, as well as health and lifestyle factors in midlife to old age (N = 35,749, 44.6–82.8 years of age). Bio-psycho-social factors could uniquely explain a small proportion of the brain age variance, in a similar pattern across diffusion approaches: cognitive scores, life satisfaction, health and lifestyle factors adding to the variance explained, but not socio-demographics. Consistent brain age associations across models were found for waist-to-hip ratio, diabetes, hypertension, smoking, matrix puzzles solving, and job and health satisfaction and perception. Furthermore, we found large variability in sex and ethnicity group differences in brain age. Our results show that brain age cannot be sufficiently explained by bio-psycho-social variables alone. However, the observed associations suggest to adjust for sex, ethnicity, cognitive factors, as well as health and lifestyle factors, and to observe bio-psycho-social factor interactions’ influence on brain age in future studies.publishedVersio
Polarized point sources in the LOFAR Two-meter Sky Survey: A preliminary catalog
The polarization properties of radio sources at very low frequencies (h45m–15h30m right ascension, 45°–57° declination, 570 square degrees). We have produced a catalog of 92 polarized radio sources at 150 MHz at 4.′3 resolution and 1 mJy rms sensitivity, which is the largest catalog of polarized sources at such low frequencies. We estimate a lower limit to the polarized source surface density at 150 MHz, with our resolution and sensitivity, of 1 source per 6.2 square degrees. We find that our Faraday depth measurements are in agreement with previous measurements and have significantly smaller errors. Most of our sources show significant depolarization compared to 1.4 GHz, but there is a small population of sources with low depolarization indicating that their polarized emission is highly localized in Faraday depth. We predict that an extension of this work to the full LOTSS data would detect at least 3400 polarized sources using the same methods, and probably considerably more with improved data processing
The association between depressive symptoms and executive control impairments in response to emotional and non-emotional information
Depression has been linked with impaired executive control and specific impairments in inhibition of negative material. To date, only a few studies have examined the relationship between depressive symptoms and executive functions in response to emotional information. Using a new paradigm, the Affective Shift Task (AST), the present study examined whether depressive symptoms in general, and rumination specifically, are related to impairments in inhibition and set shifting in response to emotional and non-emotional material. The main finding was that depressive symptoms in general were not related to inhibition. Set-shifting impairments were only observed in moderate to severely depressed individuals. Interestingly, rumination was related to inhibition impairments, specifically when processing negative information, as well as impaired set shifting as reflected in a larger shift cost. These results are discussed in relation to cognitive views on vulnerability for depression
Lifetime distributions in the methods of non-equilibrium statistical operator and superstatistics
A family of non-equilibrium statistical operators is introduced which differ
by the system age distribution over which the quasi-equilibrium (relevant)
distribution is averaged. To describe the nonequilibrium states of a system we
introduce a new thermodynamic parameter - the lifetime of a system.
Superstatistics, introduced in works of Beck and Cohen [Physica A \textbf{322},
(2003), 267] as fluctuating quantities of intensive thermodynamical parameters,
are obtained from the statistical distribution of lifetime (random time to the
system degeneracy) considered as a thermodynamical parameter. It is suggested
to set the mixing distribution of the fluctuating parameter in the
superstatistics theory in the form of the piecewise continuous functions. The
distribution of lifetime in such systems has different form on the different
stages of evolution of the system. The account of the past stages of the
evolution of a system can have a substantial impact on the non-equilibrium
behaviour of the system in a present time moment.Comment: 18 page
Covariant description of inelastic electron--deuteron scattering:predictions of the relativistic impulse approximation
Using the covariant spectator theory and the transversity formalism, the
unpolarized, coincidence cross section for deuteron electrodisintegration,
, is studied. The relativistic kinematics are reviewed, and simple
theoretical formulae for the relativistic impulse approximation (RIA) are
derived and discussed. Numerical predictions for the scattering in the high
region obtained from the RIA and five other approximations are presented
and compared. We conclude that measurements of the unpolarized coincidence
cross section and the asymmetry , to an accuracy that will distinguish
between different theoretical models, is feasible over most of the wide
kinematic range accessible at Jefferson Lab.Comment: 54 pages and 24 figure
Microscopic and macroscopic properties of A-superstatistics
The microscopic and the macroscopic properties of A-superstatistics, related
to the class A(0,n-1)\equiv sl(1|n) of simple Lie superalgebras are
investigated. The algebra sl(1|n) is described in terms of generators f_1^\pm,
>..., f_n^\pm, which satisfy certain triple relations and are called Jacobson
generators. The Fock spaces of A-superstatistics are investigated and the Pauli
principle of the corresponding statistics is formulated. Some thermal
properties of A-superstatistics are constructed under the assumption that the
particles interact only via statistical interaction imposed by the Pauli
principle. The grand partition function and the average number of particles are
written down explicitly in the general case and in two particular examples: 1)
the particles have one and the same energy and chemical potential; 2) the
energy spectrum of the orbitals is equidistant.Comment: 26 pages, 3 figure
A 180 Kpc Tidal Tail in the Luminous Infrared Merger Arp 299
We present VLA HI observations and UH88 deep optical B- and R-band
observations of the IR luminous merger Arp 299 (= NGC 3690 + IC 694). These
data reveal a gas-rich, optically faint tidal tail with a length of over 180
kpc. The size of this tidal feature necessitates an old interaction age for the
merger (~750 Myr since first periapse), which is currently experiencing a very
young star burst (~20 Myr). The observations reveal a most remarkable structure
within the tidal tail: it appears to be composed of two parallel filaments
separated by ~20 kpc. One of the filaments is gas rich with little if any
starlight, while the other is gas poor. We believe that this bifurcation
results from a warped disk in one of the progenitors. The quantities and
kinematics of the tidal HI suggest that Arp 299 results from the collision of a
retrograde Sab-Sb galaxy (IC 694) and a prograde Sbc-Sc galaxy (NGC 3690) that
occurred 750 Myr ago and which will merge into a single object in ~60 Myr. We
suggest that the present IR luminous phase in this system is due in part to the
retrograde spin of IC 694. Finally, we discuss the apparent lack of tidal dwarf
galaxies within the tail.Comment: LaTex, 14 pages, 11 figures, 4 tables, uses emulateapj.sty. Accepted
