Feminine Identities
The first four essays in this volume all focus on issues of gender in the works of different English authors and thinkers. Shorter versions of each of these essays were formerly presented as papers in an autonomous section of the Research and Educational Programme on Studies of Identity at the XXth Meeting of the Portuguese Association of Anglo-American Studies (Póvoa de Varzim, 1999) and published in the proceedings of the conference. The second cluster of essays in this volume — two of which (Jennie Wang’s and Teresa Cid’s) were first presented, in shorter versions, at the joint ASA/CAAS Conference (Montréal, 1999) — addresses the work of American women variously engaged in contexts of cultural diversity and grappling with the ideas of what it means to be an American and a woman, particularly in the twentieth century. These essays approach, from different angles, the definitional quandaries and semantic difficulties encountered when speaking about the self and the United States and provide, in one way or another, a sort of feminine rewriting of American myths and history.Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologi

Magnetic tunneling junctions with the Heusler compound Co_2Cr_{0.6}Fe_{0.4}Al
The Heusler alloy is used as an electrode of magnetic tunneling junctions.
The junctions are deposited by magnetron dc sputtering using shadow mask
techniques with AlO_{x} as a barrier and cobalt as counter electrode.
Measurements of the magnetoresistive differential conductivity in a temperature
range between 4K and 300K are shown. An analysis of the barrier properties
applying the Simmons model to the bias dependent junction conductivity is
performed. VSM measurements were carried out to examine the magnetic properties

Direct observation of melting in a 2-D superconducting vortex lattice
Topological defects such as dislocations and disclinations are predicted to
determine the twodimensional (2-D) melting transition. In 2-D superconducting
vortex lattices, macroscopic measurements evidence melting close to the
transition to the normal state. However, the direct observation at the scale of
individual vortices of the melting sequence has never been performed. Here we
provide step by step imaging through scanning tunneling spectroscopy of a 2-D
system of vortices up to the melting transition in a focused-ion-beam
nanodeposited W-based superconducting thin film. We show directly the
transition into an isotropic liquid below the superconducting critical
temperature. Before that, we find a hexatic phase, characterized by the
appearance of free dislocations, and a smectic-like phase, possibly originated
through partial disclination unbinding. These results represent a significant
step in the understanding of melting of 2-D systems, with impact across several
research fields, such as liquid crystal molecules, or lipids in membranes.Comment: Submitted to Nature Physic
Formation of finite antiferromagnetic clusters and the effect of electronic phase separation in Pr{_0.5}Ca{_0.5}Mn{_0.975}Al{_0.025}O{_3}
We report the first experimental evidence of a magnetic phase arising due to
the thermal blocking of antiferromagnetic clusters in the weakened charge and
orbital ordered system Pr{_0.5}Ca{_0.5}Mn{_0.975}Al{_0.025}O{_3}. The third
order susceptibility (\chi_3) is used to differentiate this transition from a
spin or cluster glass like freezing mechanism. These clusters are found to be
mesoscopic and robust to electronic phase separation which only enriches the
antiphase domain walls with holes at the cost of the bulk, without changing the
size of these clusters. This implies that Al substitution provides sufficient
disorder to quench the length scales of the striped phases.Comment: 4 Post Script Figure
Poly-l/dl-lactic acid films functionalized with collagen IV as carrier substrata for corneal epithelial stem cells
Limbal epithelial stem cells (LESCs) are responsible for the renewal of corneal epithelium. Cultivated limbal epithelial transplantation is the current treatment of choice for restoring the loss or dysfunction of LESCs. To perform this procedure, a substratum is necessary for in vitro culturing of limbal epithelial cells and their subsequent transplantation onto the ocular surface. In this work, we evaluated poly-L/DL-lactic acid 70:30 (PLA) films functionalized with type IV collagen (col IV) as potential in vitro carrier substrata for LESCs. We first demonstrated that PLA-col IV films were biocompatible and suitable for the proliferation of human corneal epithelial cells. Subsequently, limbal epithelial cell suspensions, isolated from human limbal rings, were cultivated using culture medium that did not contain animal components. The cells adhered significantly faster to PLA-col IV films than to tissue culture plastic (TCP). The mRNA expression levels for the LESC specific markers, K15, P63α and ABCG2 were similar or greater (significantly in the case of K15) in limbal epithelial cells cultured on PLA-col IV films than limbal epithelial cells cultured on TCP. The percentage of cells expressing the corneal (K3, K12) and the LESC (P63α, ABCG2) specific markers was similar for both substrata. These results suggest that the PLA-col IV films promoted LESC attachment and helped to maintain their undifferentiated stem cell phenotype. Modeling non-life insurance price for risk without historical information
How should an insurer price a risk for which there is no history? This work intends
to show, step by step, which main mechanisms are needed to capture the tariff model
of another insurance company minimizing the risk involved. The document generally deals with the price-making mechanisms in non-life insurance through the GLM
regression models — Generalized Linear Model, more precisely the Poisson, Gamma
and Tweedie models. Given the complexity of the application of these models in
experimental design, it is studied a simpler way to characterize the rate, namely considering the Box–Cox transformation with SUR — Seemingly Unrelated Regression.
An orthogonal experimental design to collect information is also presented as well as

A search for pre- and proto-brown dwarfs in the dark cloud Barnard 30 with ALMA
In this work we present ALMA continuum observations at 880 m of 30
sub-mm cores previously identified with APEX/LABOCA at 870m in the Barnard
30 cloud. The main goal is to characterize the youngest and lowest mass
population in the cloud. As a result, we report the detection of five (out of
30) spatially unresolved sources with ALMA, with estimated masses between 0.9
and 67 M. From these five sources, only two show gas emission. The
analysis of multi-wavelength photometry from these two objects, namely B30-LB14
and B30-LB19, is consistent with one Class II- and one Class I low-mass stellar
object, respectively. The gas emission is consistent with a rotating disk in
the case of B30-LB14, and with an oblate rotating envelope with infall
signatures in the case of LB19. The remaining three ALMA detections do not have
infrared counterparts and can be classified as either deeply embedded objects
or as starless cores if B30 members. In the former case, two of them (LB08 and
LB31) show internal luminosity upper limits consistent with Very Low Luminosity
objects, while we do not have enough information for LB10. In the starless core
scenario, and taking into account the estimated masses from ALMA and the
APEX/LABOCA cores, we estimate final masses for the central objects in the
substellar domain, so they could be classified as pre-BD core candidates.Comment: Published in A&
