SOCIAL IDENTITIES OF BLACK FEMALES IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEXTBOOKS USED IN BRAZIL AND CAMEROON: INTERSECTIONALITIES OF RACE, GENDER, SOCIAL CLASS AND CRITICAL RACIAL LITERACY
This article analyzes how the social identities of black females are represented in English-language textbooks used in Brazil and Cameroon; the intention is to generate reflections on how these social identities are portrayed. This research is linked to my participation in an international research project involving universities in Brazil and Cameroon. In the article I analyze a textbook I collected in Cameroon (Bamenda) and another textbook that is used in Brazil. I address the following: 1) What are the results of studies regarding English-language textbooks, the social identities of black females, and intersectionality with the issues of race, gender and social class in Brazil? 2) What do English-language textbooks used in Brazil and Cameroon reveal about black females and intersectionalities with social class? The reference framework that supports this discussion includes the issues of intersectionality, race, gender and social class (CRENSHAW, 1991), as well as critical racial literacy (SKERRETT, 2011; MOSLEY, 2010, FERREIRA, 2015b). The article concludes that black females are less represented than males in textbooks used in both Brazil and Cameroon. In the case of Brazil, black females are less represented than black and white males, and white females

Quantum Random Number Generators (QRNGs) promise information-theoretic security
by exploring the intrinsic probabilistic properties of quantum mechanics. In
practice, their security frequently relies on a number of assumptions over physical
devices. In this thesis, a randomness generation framework that explores the
amplitude quadrature fluctuations of a vacuum state was analyzed. It employs a
homodyne measurement scheme, which can be implemented with low-cost components,
and shows potential for high performance with remarkable stability.
A mathematical description of all necessary stages was provided as security proof,
considering the quantization noise introduced by the analog-to-digital converter.
The impact of experimental limitations, such as the digitizer resolution or the
presence of excess noise due to an unbalanced detection, was characterized. Moreover,
we propose a framework to estimate the excess entropy introduced by an
unbalanced detection, and its high impact within the Shannon entropy model was
experimentally verified.
Furthermore, a real-time dedicated QRNG scheme was implemented and validated.
The variance characterization curve of the homodyne detector was measured, and
the quantum fluctuations were determined to be preponderant for an impinging
power PLO < 45.7mW. By estimating the worst-case min-entropy conditioned on
the electronic noise, approximately 8.39 true random bits can be extracted from
each sample, yielding a maximum generation rate of 8.23 Gbps. With a lengthcompatible
Toeplitz-hashing algorithm, these can be extracted at 75 Mbps with an
upper security bound of 2−105, which illustrates the quality of this implementation.
Moreover, the generation scheme was validated and verified to pass all the statistical
tests of the NIST, DieHarder, and TestU01’s SmallCrush batteries, as well as
most of TestU01’s Crush evaluations.
Finally, we propose a framework for time-interleaving the entropy source within
a classical communication channel, which removes the need for a dedicated generation
device. After assessing the conditions where quantum noise is dominant,
support for generation rates up to 1.3 Gbps was observed. The random bitstream
was subjected to the NIST randomness test suite and consistently passed all evaluations.
Moreover, a clean quadrature phase shift keying constellation was recovered,
which supports the multi-purpose function of the scheme.Geradores quânticos de números aleatórios (QRNGs) prometem sistemas
informação-teoricamente seguros explorando as propriedades intrinsecamente probabilÃsticas
A curva
todas as avaliações.
quadratura obtida viabiliza a operação multifuncional do sistema.Mestrado em Engenharia FÃsic
Dynamics of nonautonomous eco-pidemiological models
We consider a general eco-epidemiological model which includes a large variety
of eco-epidemiological models available in the literature. We assume that the parameters
are time dependent and we consider general functions for the predation on
infected and uninfected prey and also for the vital dynamics of uninfected prey and
predator populations. We studied this model in four scenarios: non-autonomous, periodic,
discrete and random. In the non-autonomous and discrete case we discussed
the uniform strong persistence and extinction of the disease, in the periodic case, we
studied the existence of an endemic periodic orbit, and nally, in the random case
we studied the existence of random global attractors.

IBNR techniques in health insurance: a machine learning approach
Project Work presented as the partial requirement for obtaining a Master's degree in Statistics and Information Management, specialization in Risk Analysis and ManagementLoss reserves are typically one of the largest liabilities on an insurer’s balance sheet
since they can have a significant impact on profits as well as the insurer’s solvency.
The Chain Ladder model is an outstanding actuarial reserving technique that has been
applied over the years to estimate Incurred But Not Reported claims.
This project aims to provide the most accurate estimates possible for the calculation
and prediction of reserve claim amounts in the context of corporate health insurance.
For this, the Chain Ladder approach is compared with machine learning algorithms
such as the Support Vector Machine (SVM), the Random Forest (RF), the Extreme
Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) and Neural Networks (NN)
Xanthinuria secondary to allopurinolt therapy in dogs with canine leishmaniosis : current perspectives of the Iberian Veterinary Community
Apesar das medidas preventivas serem por vezes negligenciadas, os Médicos Veterinários Ibéricos aparentam conhecer as diversas opções que podem ser usadas no maneio da xantinúria.ABSTRACT - Xanthinuria secondary to allopurinolt therapy in dogs with canine leishmaniosis : current perspectives of the Iberian Veterinary Community - Xanthinuria is the major urinary adverse effect in dogs with leishmaniosis under allopurinol therapy. Although preventive and management measures are essential for its treatment, updated information about xanthinuria management in clinical practice is lacking.
This study aimed to investigate the current medical approach of the Iberian Veterinary Community (IVC) on prevention and management of xanthinuria secondary to allopurinol therapy in canine leishmaniosis (CanLeish).
A cross-sectional study was conducted based on an online anonymous survey which was diffused via Iberian social network veterinary groups. This questionnaire detailed: general characteristics of the respondents; allopurinol prescription regimens; allopurinol withdrawal and adverse effects; xanthinuria detection, complications, and diagnosis; xanthinuria preventive and reactive measures.
A total of 230 answers were obtained from the IVC (131 from Portugal and 99 from Spain). Most clinicians follow international recommendations when using allopurinol in CanLeish therapies. A total of 54.6% of clinicians stated that they had stopped the therapy before its ideal duration due to the appearance of adverse effects other than xanthinuria. About 71.6% of clinicians have detected xanthinuria, being the appearance of urinary clinical signs, the most common complication detected. Urinalysis was the preferred diagnostic method to detect xanthinuria. Considering its prevention, 75.1% of clinicians inform owners about possible adverse effects of allopurinol therapies, although only 28.4% consider an appropriate dietary change to a low purine diet. Urinalysis and imaging controls are used by 71.2% and 31% of clinicians, respectively, to monitor allopurinol therapies.
When facing xanthinuria, measures concerning allopurinol therapy are considered, such as discontinuing it, reducing its dosage, increasing its administration frequency, or replacing it. Also, 72.1% of clinicians take other measures, with emphasis on the transition to a low-purine diet. Finally, the estimated frequency of xanthinuria in their daily practice was considered less than 25%, by 91.7% of veterinary surgeons.
These findings show that the IVC is aware that xanthinuria is a common complication in CanLeish allopurinol therapies. Although preventive measures are often neglected, clinicians seem to be conscious about the different options that can be used to manage xanthinuria.N/
30 sujeitos não-cegos, comparados pelas variáveis sexo e idade.
Several studies suggest that blind individuals develop superior skills in the use of other
senses to compensate for their loss of vision. Therefore, it is important to check if this
compensatory mechanism also occurs in smell of blind subjects. Thus we studied the
olfactory thresholds and olfactory adaptation in 30 blind subjects and 30 sighted subjects,
compared by gender and age. The olfactory thresholds were measured using a test similar to
the task of detection olfactory thresholds Sniffin Sticks Test (Hummel et al., 1997), and
olfactory adaptation was evaluated through a simple task of repeated and prolonged exposure
to the olfactory stimulus. No differences were found between subjects at the level of the
olfactory thresholds. However, differences were observed between the two groups of
participants on the scores obtained in the task of olfactory adaptation, obtaining the blind
subjects inferior results therefore greater adaptation to olfactory stimuli presented. The results
indicate that the groups did not differ significantly in their olfactory threshold scores, but
notes the occurrence of adaptation in both groups for the odor stimulus presented
Banking crises: the impact of financial liberalization
This paper intends to study whether financial liberalization tends to increase the likelihood of systemic banking crises. I used a sample of 79 countries with data
spanning from 1973 to 2005 to run a panel probit model. I found that, if anything,
financial liberalization as measured across seven different dimensions tends to decrease
the probability of occurrence of a systemic banking crisis. I went further and did several robustness tests – used a conditional probit model, tested for different durations of liberalization impact and reduced the sample by considering only the first crisis event for each country. Main results still verified, proving the results’ robustness.UNL - NSB
