Symmetry Nonrestoration in a Resummed Renormalized Theory at High Temperature

We reinvestigate the interesting phenomenon of symmetry nonrestoration at high temperature in the multifield O(N_1) X O(N_2) model. We apply modified self-consistent resummation (MSCR) in order to obtain the scalar dressed masses and find in what circumstances a resummed multifield theory which has symmetry (non)restoration can be renormalized. It is shown that, aside from the consistency of the MSCR method, the basic ingredient that guarantees the renormalization of a multifield model within a resummation approach is the T^2 mass behavior of field theory at high temperature.Comment: 14 pages, 1 ps figure, revtex, Phys. Nonequilibrium pion dynamics near the critical point in a constituent quark model

We study static and dynamical critical phenomena of chiral symmetry breaking in a two-flavor Nambu--Jona-Lasinio constituent quark model. We obtain the low-energy effective action for scalar and pseudoscalar degrees of freedom to lowest order in quark loops and to quadratic order in the meson fluctuations around the mean field. The \emph{static} limit of critical phenomena is shown to be described by a Ginzburg-Landau effective action including \emph{spatial} gradients. Hence \emph{static} critical phenomena is described by the universality class of the O(4) Heisenberg ferromagnet. \emph{Dynamical} critical phenomena is studied by obtaining the equations of motion for pion fluctuations. We find that for T<TcT<T_c the are stable long-wavelength pion excitations with dispersion relation ωπ(k)=k\omega_{\pi}(k)=k described by isolated pion poles. The residue of the pion pole vanishes near TcT_c as Z1/ln(1T/Tc)Z \propto 1/|\ln(1-T/T_c)| and long-wavelength fluctuations are damped out by Landau damping on a time scale trel(k)1/kt_\mathrm{rel}(k)\propto 1/k, reflecting \emph{critical slowing down} of pion fluctuations near the critical point. At the critical point, the pion propagator features mass shell logarithmic divergences which we conjecture to be the harbinger of a (large) dynamical anomalous dimension. We find that while the \emph{classical spinodal} line coincides with that of the Ginzburg-Landau theory, the growth rate of long-wavelength spinodal fluctuations has a richer wavelength dependence as a consequence of Landau damping. We argue that Landau damping prevents a \emph{local} low energy effective action in terms of a derivative expansion in real time.Comment: 22 pages 5 figures. to appear in Nucl. Phys.

Survival and prognostic factors in patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma

This study aimed to evaluate sociodemographic and clinical factors influencing overall survival (OS) in patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Medical charts of 547 patients with OSCC from a public hospital in northeastern Brazil seen between 1999 and 2013 were evaluated. Survival analysis was performed using the Kaplan-Meier method. The influence of age, sex, ethnicity, clinical stage, anatomical location, type of treatment, and comorbidities on the patients? prognosis was evaluated. Cox proportional hazards regression model was used to identify independent prognostic factors. The 5-year OS was 39%. Multivariate analysis showed that age < 40 years (HR = 2.20; 95%CI: 1.02-4.72) and a single treatment modality (HR = 1.91; 95%CI: 1.37-2.67) were associated with a poor prognosis, while early clinical stage resulted in better outcomes (HR = 0.38; 95%CI: 0.25-0.58). OSCC patients in advanced clinical stages, diagnosed at a younger age, and submitted to a single therapeutic modality have a poorer prognosis
