<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Despite the numerous in-vitro studies on the mechanical properties and simulated injury mechanisms of the anterior talofibular ligament (ATFL) and calcaneofibular ligament (CFL), the in-vivo biomechanical behavior of these two ligaments has not yet been described.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Apparent length of the ATFL and CFL was measured in four ankles in healthy male subjects between 32 and 45 years of age (two left and two right) during a dorsiflexion-plantarflexion and supination-pronation arc of motion using a combined dual-orthogonal fluoroscopic and magnetic resonance imaging technique.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The ATFL elongated from the neutral position at 16.3 +/- 3.0 mm to 20.8 +/- 2.7 mm at maximal plantarflexion and shortened significantly from the neutral position to 13.9 +/- 2.9 mm at maximal dorsiflexion (<it>p </it>= 0.01). The CFL shortened from the neutral position at 28.0 +/- 2.9 mm to 26.6 +/- 2.2 mm at maximal plantarflexion (<it>p </it>= 0.08) and elongated significantly from the neutral position to 29.9 +/- 3.0 mm at maximal dorsiflexion (<it>p </it>= 0.003). The ATFL elongated significantly from 14.8 +/- 2.5 mm at maximal pronation to 17.4 +/- 3.0 mm at maximal supination (<it>p </it>= 0.08). At the same time, the CFL shortened from 31.0 +/- 3.8 mm at maximal pronation to 26.9 +/- 3.6 mm at maximal supination (<it>p </it>= 0.02).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The results showed that the ATFL elongates more during plantarflexion and supination whereas the CFL increases in length with dorsiflexion and pronation. Concurrently, these data also demonstrated the reciprocal function between the two ligaments. While one shortens, the other one elongates. The different elongation of the ATFL and CFL during the same motion arc suggests that under excessive loading conditions the ATFL might be more vulnerable in plantarflexion and supination while the CFL might be more susceptible to injury in dorsiflexion and pronation. Furthermore, in the case of surgical reconstruction the grafts used to reconstruct the two ligaments may need to be tensioned at different positions of the ankle in order to reproduce their natural in vivo function.</p

Water decolorization using tuned ternary Deep Eutectic solvents

A method to totally decolorize textile wastewaters using new extraction solvents is proposed, with the aim of vastly reducing water consumption. This technique allows for water reuse while solving one of the biggest problems of the textile industry: the generation of huge amounts of liquid residues. In these effluents, dyes are the most common present pollutants, and are toxic to both human and aquatic life, and to the environment. Full decolorization is an indispensable prerequisite to obtain a clean water that can be repurposed following circular economy principles. To decolorize aqueous streams, liquid–liquid extraction is a widely used technique, achieving both the recovery of the pollutants and the used solvent. In this context, Deep Eutectic Solvents are a promising candidate for novel optimized processes. In this work, we propose several of these agents, formed from tetrabutylammonium chloride, thymol, menthol and decanoic acid, optimized for interaction with a wide array of dye classes and processable physicochemical properties. Across all the studied solvents, it was possible to achieve high extraction efficiency, with full decolorization for most dyes, at very low solvent to aqueous phase ratios. Furthermore, assays using synthetic effluents, containing dyes and other chemicals used to ensure a correct dyeing process, show that our solvents are good candidates to treat streams as those found in industry.Agencia Estatal de Investigación (AEI) | Ref. Textile industries release dangerous wastewater that contain dyes into the environment. Due to their toxic, carcinogenic and mutagenic nature, they must be removed before the discharge. Liquid–liquid extraction has proven to be an efficient method for the removal of these dyes. As extractants, deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have shown excellent results in recent years, as well as presenting several green properties. Therefore, four different hydrophobic DESs based on natural components were prepared thymol:decanoic acid (T:D (1:1)), thymol:DL-menthol (T:M (1:1)), thymol:DL-menthol (T:M (1:2)) and thymol:coumarin (T:C (2:1)) for the extraction of Malachite Green (MG), Brilliant Blue G (BBG), Acid Yellow 73 (AY73), Reactive Red 29 (RR29), Acid Blue 113 (AB113), Reactive Black 5 (RB5), Remazol Brilliant Blue (RBB), Direct Yellow 27 (DY27), Acid Blue 80 (AB80), Direct Blue 15 (DB15) and Acid Violet 43 (AV43) dyes from water. The operational parameters of the liquid–liquid extraction were selected in order to save time and materials, resulting in 30 min of stirring, 15 min of centrifugation and an aqueous:organic ratio of 5:1. In these conditions, the highest values of extraction obtained were 99% for MG, 89% for BBG and 94% for AY73. Based on these results, the influence of the aqueous:organic phase ratio and the number of necessary stages to achieve water decolorization was studied.Xunta de Galicia | Ref. On 15th September 2011, the European Written Declaration on Epilepsy was passed by the European Union (EU) Parliament. This was a significant moment for all people who have been fighting over the years for a just recognition of the importance of epilepsy in the European political agenda. The whole process described below included several months of concerted effort by Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) and by Epilepsy Advocacy Europe (EAE), a joint task force of the International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE) and the International Bureau for Epilepsy (IBE). ILAE and IBE member associations in Europe and many individuals also contributed greatly to the success of this initiative.peer-reviewe

Being yourself and mental health: Goal motives, positive affect and self-acceptance protect people with HIV from depressive symptoms

    Get PDF
Depression is a major problem for many people living with HIV. In general population-based studies, it was found that characteristics of personal goals, positive affect, and self-acceptance were associated negatively with depression, but almost no studies have investigated their role in HIV infection-related depression. This study examines a prospective model where autonomy and perceived progress in personal goals are positively associated with self-acceptance and positive affect, and these variables, over time, are negatively associated with depressive symptoms. Participants (N=70) responded first to measures of autonomy, progress in personal goals, perceptions of self-acceptance, and positive affect, and four months later, they completed measures of depression. Personal goals variables were observed to be differentially associated with well-being variables: whereas personal goals autonomy was directly associated with both well-being variables, progress in personal goals was directly associated with positive affect and indirectly with self-acceptance, through its association with positive affect. Longitudinally, both self-acceptance and positive affect were associated with depression, the former directly, and the latter indirectly, through its association with self-acceptance. Self-acceptance is revealed as an important predictor of depression in PLWH. Results are discussed in terms of the contributions of hedonic and eudaimonic well-being to the relief of depressive symptoms

Hippocampal position and orientation as prognostic biomarkers for posttraumatic epileptogenesis: an experimental study in a rat lateral fluid percussion model

Objective This study was undertaken to identify prognostic biomarkers for posttraumatic epileptogenesis derived from parameters related to the hippocampal position and orientation. Methods Data were derived from two preclinical magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) follow-up studies: EPITARGET (156 rats) and Epilepsy Bioinformatics Study for Antiepileptogenic Therapy (EpiBioS4Rx; University of Eastern Finland cohort, 43 rats). Epileptogenesis was induced with lateral fluid percussion-induced traumatic brain injury (TBI) in adult male Sprague Dawley rats. In the EPITARGET cohort, T2*-weighted MRI was performed at 2, 7, and 21 days and in the EpiBioS4Rx cohort at 2, 9, and 30 days and 5 months post-TBI. Both hippocampi were segmented using convolutional neural networks. The extracted segmentation mask was used for a geometric construction, extracting 39 parameters that described the position and orientation of the left and right hippocampus. In each cohort, we assessed the parameters as prognostic biomarkers for posttraumatic epilepsy (PTE) both individually, using repeated measures analysis of variance, and in combination, using random forest classifiers. Results The extracted parameters were highly effective in discriminating between sham-operated and TBI rats in both the EPITARGET and EpiBioS4Rx cohorts at all timepoints (t; balanced accuracy &gt; .9). The most discriminating parameter was the inclination of the hippocampus ipsilateral to the lesion at t = 2 days and the volumes at t &gt;= 7 days after TBI. Furthermore, in the EpiBioS4Rx cohort, we could effectively discriminate epileptogenic from nonepileptogenic animals with a longer MRI follow-up, at t = 150 days (area under the curve = .78, balanced accuracy = .80, p = .0050), based on the orientation of both hippocampi. We found that the ipsilateral hippocampus rotated outward on the horizontal plane, whereas the contralateral hippocampus rotated away from the vertical direction. Significance We demonstrate that assessment of TBI-induced hippocampal deformation by clinically translatable MRI methodologies detects subjects with prior TBI as well as those at high risk of PTE, paving the way toward subject stratification for antiepileptogenesis studies

Cardiorespiratory events; Prognostic factor; Pulse oximetryEventos cardiorrespiratorios; Factor pronóstico; Oximetría de pulsoEsdeveniments cardiorespiratoris; Factor pronòstic; Oximetria de polsBackground: During early skin-to-skin contact (ESSC), alterations in peripheral oxygen saturation (SpO2) and heart rate (HR) have been frequently observed. Objectives: This study aimed to determine the incidence of cardiorespiratory events (CREs) during ESSC in healthy term newborns (HTNs) and estimate the association of maternal and neonatal prognostic factors with the risk of CREs. Methods: A pooled analysis of the cohort from a clinical trial involving healthy mother–child dyads during ESSC was performed. Pulse oximetry was employed to continuously monitor SpO2 and HR within 2 h after birth. The individual and combined prognostic relevance of the demographic and clinical characteristics of dyads for the occurrence of a CRE (SpO2 180 bpm) was analyzed through logistic regression models. Results: Of the 254 children assessed, 169 [66.5%; 95% confidence interval (95% CI), 60.5–72.5%] had at least one CRE. The characteristics that increased the risk of CRE were maternal age ≥35 years (odds ratio, 2.21; 95% CI, 1.19–4.09), primiparity (1.96; 1.03–3.72), gestational body mass index (BMI) >25 kg/m2 (1.92; 1.05–3.53), and birth time between 09:00 p.m. and 08:59 a.m. (2.47; 1.02–5.97). Conclusion: CREs were more frequent in HTNs born during nighttime and in HTNs born to first-time mothers, mothers ≥35 years, and mothers with a gestational BMI >25 kg/m2. These predictor variables can be determined during childbirth. Identification of neonates at higher risk of developing CREs would allow for closer surveillance during ESSC

A study about the design, construction and working of a thesaurus in an audiovisual context is presented. Firstly, the keywords, a very important part of the thesaurus, are analysed in order to study standardisation and connotation. Secondly, hierarchical and associative relationships are explained in relation to their diversity and their ability to improve the global estructure in the thesaurus. Thirdly, the conceptual framework of the thesaurus is also analysed. The aim is to overcome thematic categorisation in favour of other textual models. In reality, this project is realized both from a traditional perspective and from new ones that try to be objective and to improve processes and methods related to this domain. Animal models of epilepsy and seizures, mostly involving mice and rats, are used to understand the pathophysiology of the different forms of epilepsy and their comorbidities, to identify biomarkers, and to discover new antiepileptic drugs and treatments for comorbidities. Such models represent an important area for application of the 3Rs (replacement, reduction and refinement of animal use). This report provides background information and recommendations aimed at minimising pain, suffering and distress in rodent models of epilepsy and seizures in order to improve animal welfare and optimise the quality of studies in this area. The report includes practical guidance on principles of choosing a model, induction procedures, in vivo recordings, perioperative care, welfare assessment, humane endpoints, social housing, environmental enrichment, reporting of studies and data sharing. In addition, some model-specific welfare considerations are discussed, and data gaps and areas for further research are identified. The guidance is based upon a systematic review of the scientific literature, survey of the international epilepsy research community, consultation with veterinarians and animal care and welfare officers, and the expert opinion and practical experience of the members of a Working Group convened by the United Kingdom's National Centre for the Replacement, Refinement and Reduction of Animals in Research (NC3Rs)
