Excludability: A laboratory study on forced ranking in team production
Exclusion has long been employed as a common disciplinary measure against defectors, both at work and in social life. In this paper, we study the effect of excludability - exclusion of the lowest contributor - on contributions in three different team production settings. We demonstrate theoretically and experimentally that excludability increases contributions. Excludability is particularly effective in production settings where the average or maximum effort determines team production. In these settings, we observe almost immediate convergence to full contribution. In settings where the minimum effort determines team production, excludability leads to a large increase in contributions only if the value of the excluded individual's contribution to the public good is redistributed among the included individuals
Pathoadaptive mutations of Escherichia coli K1 in experimental neonatal systemic infection
Although Escherichia coli K1 strains are benign commensals in adults, their acquisition at birth by the newborn may result in life-threatening systemic infections, most commonly sepsis and meningitis. Key features of these infections, including stable gastrointestinal (GI) colonization and age-dependent invasion of the bloodstream, can be replicated in the neonatal rat. We previously increased the capacity of a septicemia isolate of E. coli K1 to elicit systemic infection following colonization of the small intestine by serial passage through two-day-old (P2) rat pups. The passaged strain, A192PP (belonging to sequence type 95), induces lethal infection in all pups fed 2â6 x 106 CFU. Here we use whole-genome sequencing to identify mutations responsible for the threefold increase in lethality between the initial clinical isolate and the passaged derivative. Only four single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), in genes (gloB, yjgV, tdcE) or promoters (thrA) involved in metabolic functions, were found: no changes were detected in genes encoding virulence determinants associated with the invasive potential of E. coli K1. The passaged strain differed in carbon source utilization in comparison to the clinical isolate, most notably its inability to metabolize glucose for growth. Deletion of each of the four genes from the E. coli A192PP chromosome altered the proteome, reduced the number of colonizing bacteria in the small intestine and increased the number of P2 survivors. This work indicates that changes in metabolic potential lead to increased colonization of the neonatal GI tract, increasing the potential for translocation across the GI epithelium into the systemic circulation
Giving is a question of time: Response times and contributions to a real world public good
Recent experimental research has examined whether contributions to public goods can be traced back to intuitive or deliberative decision-making, using response times in public good games in order to identify the specific decision process at work. In light of conflicting results, this paper reports on an analysis of response time data from an online experiment in which over 3400 subjects from the general population decided whether to contribute to a real world public good. The between-subjects evidence confirms a strong positive link between contributing and deliberation and between free-riding and intuition. The average response time of contributors is 40 percent higher than that of free-riders. A within-subject analysis reveals that for a given individual, contributing significantly increases and free-riding significantly decreases the amount of deliberation required
Equality Concerns and the Limits of Self-Governance in Heterogeneous Populations
Mechanisms to overcome social dilemmas provide incentives to maximize efficiency. However, often â such as when agents are heterogeneous â there is a trade-off between efficiency and equality. Agents' concerns for equality in such instances can limit the ability of mechanisms to promote efficiency. We provide evidence for this from a public good experiment using a simple mechanism which allows individuals to communicate periodically with other group members and reward them for their actions. We show that, in homogeneous populations â where there is no tension between efficiency and equality â the mechanism permits group to obtain maximum efficiency. This is not the case in heterogeneous populations where individuals derive different benefits from cooperation. Although almost all heterogeneous groups agree to follow specific contribution rules with positive contributions, most of them either prioritize equality over efficiency or strike a compromise between the two. These findings suggest that equality concerns can impose limits on the ability of heterogeneous populations to reach efficient outcomes through self-governance
Strong, bold, and kind : Self-control and cooperation in social dilemmas

As predicted, we find a robust association between stronger self-control and higher levels of cooperation, and the association is at its strongest when the decision makerâs risk aversion is low and the cooperation levels of others high. We interpret the pattern as evidence for the notion that individuals may experience an impulse to act in self-interestâand that cooperative behavior benefits from self-control. Free-riders differ from other contributor types only in their tendency not to have identified a self-control conflict in the first place.PostprintPeer reviewe

Motives and comprehension in a public goods game with induced emotions
This study analyses the sensitivity of public goods contributions through the lens of psychological motives. We report the results of a public goods experiment in which subjects were induced with the motives of care and anger through autobiographical recall. Subjects' preferences, beliefs, and perceptions under each motive are compared with those of subjects experiencing a neutral autobiographical recall control condition. We find, but only for those subjects with the highest comprehension of the game, that care elicits significantly higher contributions than anger, with the control treatment in between. This positive influence of the care motive on unconditional giving is accounted for partly by preferences for giving and partly by the beliefs concerning greater contributions by others. Anger also affects attention to own and other's payoffs (using mouse tracking) and perceptions of the game's incentive structure (cooperative or competitive)
Increased protective efficacy of recombinant BCG strains expressing virulence-neutral proteins of the ESX-1 secretion system.
BACKGROUND: Mycobacterium bovis BCG is presently the only available anti-tuberculosis vaccine used, worldwide. While BCG protects against miliary tuberculosis (TB) and tuberculoid meningitis in children, it often fails to protect against adult pulmonary TB. It is thus imperative that new improved anti-TB vaccines are developed. The integration of the ESX-1 secretion system, absent from BCG due to the deletion of region of difference 1 (RD1), into the genome of BCG has been shown to confer to BCG::ESX-1 enhanced protection against TB as compared to BCG. METHODS: In the present study, to counterbalance the increase in virulence resulting from the integration of the RD1 region into BCG, we have constructed and evaluated several BCG::ESX-1 variants that carry selected amino-acid changes in the ESX-1-secreted antigen ESAT-6. In order to find the candidate that combines low virulence with high protective efficacy, these novel recombinant BCG::ESX-1 strains were tested for their virulence properties and their protective efficacy against Mycobacterium tuberculosis in two different animal models (mouse and guinea-pig). RESULTS: Among several candidates tested, the BCG::ESAT-L28A/L29S strain, carrying modifications at residues Leu(28)-Leu(29) of the ESAT molecule, showed strong attenuation in mice and high protective efficiency both in mouse and guinea-pig vaccination-infection models. CONCLUSION: This strain thus represents a promising candidate that merits further investigations and development. Our research also provides the proof of concept that selected ESX-1-complemented BCG strains may show low virulence and increased protective potential over parental strains
