    Defectos del desarrollo del esmalte en dentición temporaria: Su relación con caries y el estado nutricional en niños menores de 6 años de edad en Mendoza, República Argentina

    Objective: to establish the relationships between the presence of Enamel development defects (EDD) in the temporary dentition, the Early Childhood Caries (ECC) and the nutritional status of children attending two centers for the prevention and treatment of child malnutrition, in Mendoza, Rep. Argentina. Materials and method: On a total of 307 children between 12 and 71 months of age (151 eutrophic and 156 with child malnutrition), with prior parental consent, dmft and dmfs were recorded according to ICDAS II categories of active caries 2 to 6, and presence/absence of EDD. Frequency distributions and nonparametric association tests with p≤ 0.05 were determined. Results: 47.6% of the children studied presented EDD, being more prevalent in children with malnutrition (X2=13.063; p= 0.00). A statistically significant association was recorded between the presence of DDE and dmfs (Mann Whitney U= 9945, p=0.015) and dmfs (Mann Whitney U= 10044.5, p=0.021). In the children who presented DDE (n=146), the malnourished group presented dmft values higher than the eutrophic group (Mann Whitney U=2034, p= 0.044). Conclusions: EDD were more prevalent in children with malnutrition, and were positively related in this study group with ECC.Objetivo: establecer las relaciones entre la presencia Defectos del Desarrollo del Esmalte (DDE) en dentición temporaria, la Caries de Infancia Temprana (CIT) y el estado nutricional en niños asistentes a dos centros de prevención y tratamiento de la desnutrición infantil, en Mendoza, Rep. Argentina. Materiales y método: Sobre un total de 307 niños entre 12 y 71 meses de edad (151 eutróficos y 156 con desnutrición infantil), previo consentimiento parental, se registraron ceod y ceos según categorías de caries activas ICDAS II 2 a 6, y presencia/ausencia de DDE. Se determinaron las distribuciones de frecuencias y pruebas de asociación no paramétricas con p≤ 0,05. Resultados: el 47.6% de los niños estudiados presentó DDE, siendo más prevalente en niños con desnutrición (X2=13.063; p= 0,00). Se registró una asociación estadísticamente significativa entre la presencia de DDE y ceod (U de Mann Whitney= 9945, p=0,015) y ceos (U de Mann Whitney= 10044,5, p=0,021). En los niños que presentaron DDE (n=146), el grupo con desnutrición presentó valores de ceod mayores que el eutrófico (U de Mann Whitney=2034, p= 0.044). Conclusiones: los DDE fueron más prevalentes en los niños con desnutrición, y se relacionaron positivamente en este grupo de estudio con CIT

    Bioactive characterization of Persea americana Mill. by-products: A rich source of inherent antioxidants

    [EN] Avocado (Persea americana Mill.) is a worldwide consumed fruit, with great interest for cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries; however, 30% of avocado fruits are bio-wastes (peels and kernels), converting them into a potential source of bioactive compounds, such as phenolic compounds. Therefore, the hydroethanolic extracts of peels and kernels of Persea america Mill. var. Hass were analysed regarding their individual phenolic profile by HPLC-DAD/ESI-MS and correlated with their antioxidant, antimicrobial and cytotoxic activities. Avocado by-products presented a very distinct phenolic profile, presenting higher concentration in peels (227.9 mg/g of extract for total phenolic content), mainly in (epi)catechin derivatives (175 mg/g of extract), followed by chlorogenic derivatives (42.9 mg/g of extract). In this study hydrophilic and lipophilic antioxidant assays were performed together for the first time in P. americana by-products, and although kernels showed a great antioxidant potential (EC50 values ranging from 18.1 to 276 mu g/mL), peels presented the highest potential (EC50 ranging from 11.7 to 152 mu g/mL), mainly due to the presence of phenolic compounds, and an overall better performance in the antibacterial assays. Further studies needs to be conducted to better understand the correlation between the presence of phenolic compounds and bioactivities, however, the main objective is to implement these biocompounds in different products and industries, due to results obtained, P. americana peels could be a great alternative in the substitution of synthetic antioxidants.The authors are grateful to the Foundation for Science and Technology(FCT, Portugal) and FEDER under Program PT2020 for financial support to CIMO (UID/AGR/00690/2013) and L.     Spectroscopic verification of very luminous galaxy candidates in the early universe

    During the first 500 million years of cosmic history, the first stars and galaxies formed and seeded the cosmos with heavy elements. These early galaxies illuminated the transition from the cosmic "dark ages" to the reionization of the intergalactic medium. This transitional period has been largely inaccessible to direct observation until the recent commissioning of JWST, which has extended our observational reach into that epoch. Excitingly, the first JWST science observations uncovered a surprisingly high abundance of early star-forming galaxies. However, the distances (redshifts) of these galaxies were, by necessity, estimated from multi-band photometry. Photometric redshifts, while generally robust, can suffer from uncertainties and/or degeneracies. Spectroscopic measurements of the precise redshifts are required to validate these sources and to reliably quantify their space densities, stellar masses, and star formation rates, which provide powerful constraints on galaxy formation models and cosmology. Here we present the results of JWST follow-up spectroscopy of a small sample of galaxies suspected to be amongst the most distant yet observed. We confirm redshifts z > 10 for two galaxies, including one of the first bright JWST-discovered candidates with z = 11.4, and show that another galaxy with suggested z ~ 16 instead has z = 4.9, with strong emission lines that mimic the expected colors of more distant objects. These results reinforce the evidence for the rapid production of luminous galaxies in the very young Universe, while also highlighting the necessity of spectroscopic verification for remarkable candidates.Comment: Submitted to Natur

    CEERS Spectroscopic Confirmation of NIRCam-Selected z > 8 Galaxy Candidates with JWST/NIRSpec: Initial Characterization of their Properties

    We present JWST NIRSpec spectroscopy for 11 galaxy candidates with photometric redshifts of z913z\simeq9-13 and MUV[21,18]M_{\rm\,UV} \in[-21,-18] newly identified in NIRCam images in the Cosmic Evolution Early Release Science (CEERS) Survey. We confirm emission line redshifts for 7 galaxies at z=7.7628.998z=7.762-8.998 using spectra at 15μ\sim1-5\mum either with the NIRSpec prism or its three medium resolution gratings. For z9z\simeq9 photometric candidates, we achieve a high confirmation rate of \simeq90\%, which validates the classical dropout selection from NIRCam photometry. No robust emission lines are identified in three galaxy candidates at z>10z>10, where the strong [OIII] and Hβ\beta lines would be redshifted beyond the wavelength range observed by NIRSpec, and the Lyman-α\alpha continuum break is not detected with the current sensitivity. Compared with HST-selected bright galaxies (MUV22M_{\rm\,UV}\simeq-22) that are similarly spectroscopically confirmed at z8z\gtrsim8, these NIRCam-selected galaxies are characterized by lower star formation rates (SFR4M\simeq4\,M_{\odot}~yr1^{-1}) and lower stellar masses (108M\simeq10^{8}\,M_{\odot}), but with higher [OIII]+Hβ\beta equivalent widths (\simeq1100A˚\r{A}), and elevated production efficiency of ionizing photons (log(ξion/Hzerg1)25.8\log(\xi_{\rm\,ion}/{\rm\,Hz\,erg}^{-1})\simeq25.8) induced by young stellar populations (<10<10~Myrs) accounting for 20%\simeq20\% of the galaxy mass, highlighting the key contribution of faint galaxies to cosmic reionization. Taking advantage of the homogeneous selection and sensitivity, we also investigate metallicity and ISM conditions with empirical calibrations using the [OIII]/Hβ\beta ratio. We find that galaxies at z89z\sim8-9 have higher SFRs and lower metallicities than galaxies at similar stellar masses at z26z\sim2-6, which is generally consistent with the current galaxy formation and evolution models.Comment: 21 pages, 11 figures, 2 tables.     De novo assembly and transcriptome characterization of the freshwater prawn Palaemonetes argentinus: Implications for a detoxification response

    Palaemonetes argentinus, an abundant freshwater prawn species in the northern and central region of Argentina, has been used as a bioindicator of environmental pollutants as it displays a very high sensitivity to pollutants exposure. Despite their extraordinary ecological relevance, a lack of genomic information has hindered a more thorough understanding of the molecular mechanisms potentially involved in detoxification processes of this species. Thus, transcriptomic profiling studies represent a promising approach to overcome the limitations imposed by the lack of extensive genomic resources for P. argentinus, and may improve the understanding of its physiological and molecular response triggered by pollutants. This work represents the first comprehensive transcriptome-based characterization of the non-model species P. argentinus to generate functional genomic annotations and provides valuable resources for future genetic studies. Trinity de novo assembly consisted of 24,738 transcripts with high representation of detoxification (phase I and II), anti-oxidation, osmoregulation pathways and DNA replication and bioenergetics.     Quantitative Evaluation of Artifact Removal in Real Magnetoencephalogram Signals with Blind Source Separation

    The magnetoencephalogram (MEG) is contaminated with undesired signals, which are called artifacts. Some of the most important ones are the cardiac and the ocular artifacts (CA and OA, respectively), and the power line noise (PLN). Blind source separation (BSS) has been used to reduce the influence of the artifacts in the data. There is a plethora of BSS-based artifact removal approaches, but few comparative analyses. In this study, MEG background activity from 26 subjects was processed with five widespread BSS (AMUSE, SOBI, JADE, extended Infomax, and FastICA) and one constrained BSS (cBSS) techniques. Then, the ability of several combinations of BSS algorithm, epoch length, and artifact detection metric to automatically reduce the CA, OA, and PLN were quantified with objective criteria. The results pinpointed to cBSS as a very suitable approach to remove the CA. Additionally, a combination of AMUSE or SOBI and artifact detection metrics based on entropy or power criteria decreased the OA. Finally, the PLN was reduced by means of a spectral metric. These findings confirm the utility of BSS to help in the artifact removal for MEG background activity

    Social capital, social participation and life satisfaction among Chilean older adults

    OBJECTIVE To examine factors associated with social participation and their relationship with self-perceived well-being in older adults. METHODS This study was based on data obtained from the National Socioeconomic Characterization (CASEN) Survey conducted in Chile, in 2011, on a probability sample of households. We examined information of 31,428 older adults living in these households. Descriptive and explanatory analyses were performed using linear and multivariate logistic regression models. We assessed the respondents’ participation in different types of associations: egotropic, sociotropic, and religious. RESULTS Social participation increased with advancing age and then declined after the age of 80. The main finding of this study was that family social capital is a major determinant of social participation of older adults. Their involvement was associated with high levels of self-perceived subjective well-being. We identified four settings as sources of social participation: home-based; rural community-based; social policy programs; and religious. Older adults were significantly more likely to participate when other members of the household were also involved in social activities evidencing an intergenerational transmission of social participation. Rural communities, especially territorial associations, were the most favorable setting for participation. There has been a steady increase in the rates of involvement of older adults in social groups in Chile, especially after retirement. Religiosity remains a major determinant of associativism. The proportion of participation was higher among older women than men but these proportions equaled after the age of 80. CONCLUSIONS Self-perceived subjective well-being is not only dependent upon objective factors such as health and income, but is also dependent upon active participation in social life, measured as participation in associations, though its effects are moderate
