    Get PDF

Multifunctional Ionic Polymers from Deep Eutectic Monomers Based on Polyphenols

Herein we report a novel family of deep eutectic monomers and the corresponding polymers, made of (meth)acrylic ammonium salts and a series of biobased polyphenols bearing catechol or pyrogallol motifs. Phenolic chemistry allows modulating molecular interactions by tuning the ionic polymer properties from soft adhesive to tough materials. For instance, pyrogallol and hydrocaffeic acid-derived ionic polymers showed outstanding adhesiveness (>1 MPa), while tannic acid/gallic acid polymers with dense hydrogen bond distribution afforded ultratough elastomers (stretchability ≈1000% and strength ≈3 MPa). Additionally, phenolic polymeric deep eutectic solvents (polyDES) featured metal complexation ability, antibacterial properties, and fast processability by digital light 3D printing. This work was supported by Marie Sklodowska-Curie Research and Innovation Staff Exchanges (RISE) under grant agreement no. 823989 “IONBIKE”. This paper aims to propose a battery aging conscious energy management strategy. The initial design of an energy management strategy is a significant point to fulfill the efficiency goals in the short term. However, with aging, the initial conditions may vary. The new trend of digitalization allows monitoring the operation, having the possibility to improve the performance of the initially proposed strategy in the long term. Therefore, a methodology for updating the energy management strategy along the bus lifetime is intended to improve the operating costs and extend the battery lifetime. This methodology is based on a dynamic programming optimization, tuning the membership functions in a fuzzy logic control. The simulation results show a reduction of the operation costs up to 47% as long as it stands for battery (BT) lifetime extension of around 2.94%

Reducing the environmental impact of surgery on a global scale: systematic review and co-prioritization with healthcare workers in 132 countries

Abstract Background Healthcare cannot achieve net-zero carbon without addressing operating theatres. The aim of this study was to prioritize feasible interventions to reduce the environmental impact of operating theatres. Methods This study adopted a four-phase Delphi consensus co-prioritization methodology. In phase 1, a systematic review of published interventions and global consultation of perioperative healthcare professionals were used to longlist interventions. In phase 2, iterative thematic analysis consolidated comparable interventions into a shortlist. In phase 3, the shortlist was co-prioritized based on patient and clinician views on acceptability, feasibility, and safety. In phase 4, ranked lists of interventions were presented by their relevance to high-income countries and low–middle-income countries. Results In phase 1, 43 interventions were identified, which had low uptake in practice according to 3042 professionals globally. In phase 2, a shortlist of 15 intervention domains was generated. In phase 3, interventions were deemed acceptable for more than 90 per cent of patients except for reducing general anaesthesia (84 per cent) and re-sterilization of ‘single-use’ consumables (86 per cent). In phase 4, the top three shortlisted interventions for high-income countries were: introducing recycling; reducing use of anaesthetic gases; and appropriate clinical waste processing. In phase 4, the top three shortlisted interventions for low–middle-income countries were: introducing reusable surgical devices; reducing use of consumables; and reducing the use of general anaesthesia. Conclusion This is a step toward environmentally sustainable operating environments with actionable interventions applicable to both high– and low–middle–income countries

Innovation in the Basque vocational training model

    No full text
216 pThis work seeks to present some of the factors that have accounted for the present-day success of Basque vocational training. To understand what occurred in the course of history to shape the vocational training developed in Euskadi, we have to go back from the 19th century, when the first Schools of Arts and Trades were founded, to the Francoist period, with the involvement of different political, social, economic and other agents… and of course, to the change that transpired in the 1980s, when the Basque Government assumed the competence in educational affairs. The most important key to understanding this success lies in the constant process of innovation, in which quality, creativity, entrepreneurship and internationalisation progressively began to mould this process, which has contributed to the fact that Basque vocational training is acknowledged worldwide
