    The Effect of Increasing Humic Acid Applications on Some Nutrient Contents of Cress (Lepidium sativum L.) Plant

    This research was done to determine the effect of increasing Humic acid application on some nutrient element contents of cress (Lepidium sativum L.) plant. For this purpose according to randomize block experimental design, an experiment was done with three replications in greenhouse conditions. Cress plant seed was sowed 1.5 g/ m2. Four humic acid doses (I. dose: 0 mL /m2, II. dose: 8 mL /m2, III. dose: 16 mL /m2 and IV. dose: 24 mL /m2) were applied to cress plant. Then cress plants were harvested 30 days after planting. Dry matter yield and some nutrient (N, P, K, Ca, Mg, S, Fe, Cu, Zn and Mn) contents of plants were determined. According to the results, important increases some nutrient element contents of plants were determined with increasing humic acid applications. These increases were found 1. dose 5.52%, and 4. dose 6.04%, for N element, respectively. Other macro elements P (0.70%, and 0. 82%); K (6.85%, and 7.67%); Ca (1.72%, and 2.01%); Mg (0.13% and 0.15%) and S (1.04%, and 1.17%), respectively. Some micro element (Fe, Cu, Zn and Mn) contents of cress plant, 1. dose: 89.86, 9.59, 59.50 and 56.20; 4. dose: 102.17, 11.03, 67.67 and 76.63 mgkg-1, respectively. These increases were found statistically significant at the level of 5% for each nutrient element, except Mg

    First-line treatment of patients with HER2-positive metastatic gastric and gastroesophageal junction cancer

    Fluoropyrimidine+cisplatin/oxaliplatin+trastuzumab therapy is recommended for the first-line treatment of HER2-positive metastatic gastric adenocarcinoma. However, there is no comprehensive study on which platinum-based treatment should be preferred. This study aimed to compare the treatment response and survival characteristics of patients with HER2-positive metastatic gastric or gastroesophageal junction (GEJ) cancer who received fluorouracil, oxaliplatin, and leucovorin (mFOLFOX)+trastuzumab or cisplatin and fluorouracil (CF)+trastuzumab as first-line therapy. It was a multicenter, retrospective study of the Turkish Oncology Group, which included 243 patients from 21 oncology centers. There were 113 patients in the mFOLFOX+trastuzumab arm and 130 patients in the CF+trastuzumab arm. The median age was 62 years in the mFOLFOX+trastuzumab arm and 61 years in the CF+trastuzumab arm (P = 0.495). 81.4% of patients in the mFOLFOX+trastuzumab arm and 83.1% in the CF+trastuzumab arm had gastric tumor localization (P = 0.735). The median progression-free survival (PFS) was significantly higher in the mFOLFOX+trastuzumab arm (9.4 months vs. 7.3 months, P = 0.024). The median overall survival (OS) was similar in both groups (18.4 months vs. 15.1 months, P = 0.640). Maintenance trastuzumab was continued after chemotherapy in 101 patients. In this subgroup, the median OS was 23.3 months and the median PFS was 13.3 months. In conclusion, mFOLFOX+trastuzumab is similar to CF+trastuzumab in terms of the median OS, but it is more effective in terms of the median PFS in the first-line treatment of HER2-positive metastatic gastric and GEJ cancer. The choice of treatment should be made by considering the prominent toxicity findings of the chemotherapy regimens

    Factors effective on survival after radical prostatectomy: To what extent is pre-operative biopsy Gleason scoring is confident in predicting the prognosis?

    In the present study, the effect of different grades on independent survival from the biochemical relapse was investigated through comparison of the histological grades of the biopsy and prostatectomy materials in patients undergoing radical prostatectomy (RP). A total of 152 patients undergoing RP following biopsy were retrospectively investigated in an attempt to reveal the effect of discordance between needle biopsy Gleason score and RP Gleason score on prostate specific antigen relapse-free survival. Accordingly, while 58.3% (14/24) survival was seen in the patients in Group 1 (high-graded) with Gleason score 7, 93.7% (15/16) survival has been seen in the patients in Group 2 (low-graded) and Group 3 (same Gleason scores) with Gleason score 7. The difference in-between has been statically found significant (P < 0.001). Similarly, while a 10% (1/10) survival is seen in the patients in Group 1 with Gleason score 8 and above, 75% (3/4) survival has been observed in the patients in Group 2 and 3 with Gleason score 8 and above. Also in this comparison, the difference in-between has been statically found significant (P = 0.041). Eventually, different grading, particularly determination of Gleason score higher than the RP specimen biopsy also bring about bad pathologic parameters and shortened survival periods

    Relationship between elevated platelet volume and saphenous vein graft disease

    Background: Saphenous vein graft (SVG) disease is the major determinant of long term graft viability in patients undergoing coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery. Although, platelets play a major role in this pathogenetic process the nature of this interaction has not been yet been clarified. Mean platelet volume (MPV) reflects platelet production rate and stimulation. This study was designed to investigate MPV in patients with late stage SVG disease. Methods: The study population composed of 188 patients who underwent elective coronary angiography more than one year after coronary artery bypass surgery. The study population was divided in to two groups according to SVG patency. The first group consisted of 90 patients (75 men, 15 women; mean age, 63.4 ± 9.2 years) with patent SVG’s (no-stenosis group). The second group consisted of 98 patients (80 men, 18 women; mean age, 62.1 ± 10.1 years) with SVG stenosis based on the results of coronary angiography (stenosis group). Gretaer than 50% stenosis within the SVG was accepted as hemodynamically significant. Results: MPV were significantly higher in patients with SVG disease in comparison with the patients without graft disease group (9.3 ± 1.19 vs. 8.3 ± 1.10 fl, respectively, p < 0.001). In a multiple regression model, SVG disease was independently associated with MPV (β=0.837, p=0.05) along with LDL-cholesterol (β=0.159, p=0.008) and time interval after bypass surgery (β=-0.092, p=0.05). Conclusion: Platelet volume, and therefore platelet activation, appears to play a causal role in late SVG disease graft disease; hence, MPV may be useful as a post-operative marker of graft success
