Population genetic structure and direct observations reveal sex-reversed patterns of dispersal in a cooperative bird.
Sex-biased dispersal is pervasive and has diverse evolutionary implications, but the fundamental drivers of dispersal sex biases remain unresolved. This is due in part to limited diversity within taxonomic groups in the direction of dispersal sex biases, which leaves hypothesis testing critically dependent upon identifying rare reversals of taxonomic norms. Here, we use a combination of observational and genetic data to demonstrate a rare reversal of the avian sex bias in dispersal in the cooperatively breeding white-browed sparrow weaver (Plocepasser mahali). Direct observations revealed that (i) natal philopatry was rare, with both sexes typically dispersing locally to breed, and (ii), unusually for birds, males bred at significantly greater distances from their natal group than females. Population genetic analyses confirmed these patterns, as (i) corrected Assignment index (AIc), FST tests and isolation-by-distance metrics were all indicative of longer dispersal distances among males than females, and (ii) spatial autocorrelation analysis indicated stronger within-group genetic structure among females than males. Examining the spatial scale of extra-group mating highlighted that the resulting 'sperm dispersal' could have acted in concert with individual dispersal to generate these genetic patterns, but gamete dispersal alone cannot account entirely for the sex differences in genetic structure observed. That leading hypotheses for the evolution of dispersal sex biases cannot readily account for these sex-reversed patterns of dispersal in white-browed sparrow weavers highlights the continued need for attention to alternative explanations for this enigmatic phenomenon. Immune response in a wild bird is predicted by oxidative status, but does not cause oxidative stress.
The immune system provides vital protection against pathogens, but extensive evidence suggests that mounting immune responses can entail survival and fecundity costs. The physiological mechanisms that underpin these costs remain poorly understood, despite their potentially important role in shaping life-histories. Recent studies involving laboratory models highlight the possibility that oxidative stress could mediate these costs, as immune-activation can increase the production of reactive oxygen species leading to oxidative stress. However, this hypothesis has rarely been tested in free-ranging wild populations, where natural oxidative statuses and compensatory strategies may moderate immune responses and their impacts on oxidative status. Furthermore, the possibility that individuals scale their immune responses according to their oxidative status, conceivably to mitigate such costs, remains virtually unexplored. Here, we experimentally investigate the effects of a phytohaemagglutinin (PHA) immune-challenge on oxidative status in wild male and female white-browed sparrow weavers, Plocepasser mahali. We also establish whether baseline oxidative status prior to challenge predicts the scale of the immune responses. Contrary to previous work on captive animals, our findings suggest that PHA-induced immune-activation does not elicit oxidative stress. Compared with controls (n = 25 birds), PHA-injected birds (n = 27 birds) showed no evidence of a differential change in markers of oxidative damage or enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidant protection 24 hours after challenge. We did, however, find that the activity of a key antioxidant enzyme (superoxide dismutase, SOD) prior to immune-activation predicted the scale of the resulting swelling: birds with stronger initial SOD activity subsequently produced smaller swellings. Our findings (i) suggest that wild birds can mount immune responses without suffering from systemic oxidative stress, and (ii) lend support to biomedical evidence that baseline oxidative status can impact the scale of immune responses; a possibility not yet recognised in ecological studies of immunity
Sloan Digital Sky Survey Multicolor Observations of GRB010222
The discovery of an optical counterpart to GRB010222 (detected by BeppoSAX;
Piro 2001) was announced 4.4 hrs after the burst by Henden (2001a). The Sloan
Digital Sky Survey's 0.5m photometric telescope (PT) and 2.5m survey telescope
were used to observe the afterglow of GRB010222 starting 4.8 hours after the
GRB. The 0.5m PT observed the afterglow in five, 300 sec g' band exposures over
the course of half an hour, measuring a temporal decay rate in this short
period of F_nu \propto t^{-1.0+/-0.5}. The 2.5m camera imaged the counterpart
nearly simultaneously in five filters (u' g' r' i' z'), with r' = 18.74+/-0.02
at 12:10 UT. These multicolor observations, corrected for reddening and the
afterglow's temporal decay, are well fit by the power-law F_nu \propto
nu^{-0.90+/-0.03} with the exception of the u' band UV flux which is 20% below
this slope. We examine possible interpretations of this spectral shape,

An Empirical Characterization of Extended Cool Gas Around Galaxies Using MgII Absorption Features
We report results from a survey of MgII absorbers in the spectra of
background QSOs that are within close angular distances to a foreground galaxy
at z<0.5, using the Magellan Echellette Spectrograph. We have established a
spectroscopic sample of 94 galaxies at a median redshift of = 0.24 in
fields around 70 distant background QSOs (z_QSO>0.6), 71 of which are in an
'isolated' environment with no known companions and located at rho <~ 120 h^-1
kpc from the line of sight of a background QSO. The rest-frame absolute B-band
magnitudes span a range from M_B-5log h=-16.4 to M_B-5log h=-21.4 and
rest-frame B_AB-R_AB colors range from B_AB-R_AB~0 to B_AB-R_AB~1.5. Of these
'isolated' galaxies, we find that 47 have corresponding MgII absorbers in the
spectra of background QSOs and rest-frame absorption equivalent width
W_r(2796)=0.1-2.34 A, and 24 do not give rise to MgII absorption to sensitive
upper limits. Our analysis shows that (1) Wr(2796) declines with increasing
distance from 'isolated' galaxies but shows no clear trend in 'group'
environments; (2) more luminous galaxies possess more extended MgII absorbing
halos with the gaseous radius scaled by B-band luminosity according to
R_gas=75x(L_B/L_B*)^(0.35+/-0.03) h^{-1} kpc; (3) there is little dependence
between the observed absorber strength and galaxy intrinsic colors; and (4)
within R_gas, we find a mean covering fraction of ~70% for absorbers
of Wr(2796)>=0.3 A and ~80% for absorbers of Wr(2796)>=0.1 A. The
lack of correlation between Wr(2796) and galaxy colors suggests a lack of
physical connection between the origin of extended MgII halos and recent star
formation history of the galaxies. Finally, we discuss the total gas mass in
galactic halos as traced by MgII absorbers. We also compare our results with

Galactic Globular and Open Clusters in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. I. Crowded Field Photometry and Cluster Fiducial Sequences in ugriz
We present photometry for globular and open cluster stars observed with the
Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). In order to exploit over 100 million stellar
objects with r < 22.5 mag observed by SDSS, we need to understand the
characteristics of stars in the SDSS ugriz filters. While star clusters provide
important calibration samples for stellar colors, the regions close to globular
clusters, where the fraction of field stars is smallest, are too crowded for
the standard SDSS photometric pipeline to process. To complement the SDSS
imaging survey, we reduce the SDSS imaging data for crowded cluster fields
using the DAOPHOT/ALLFRAME suite of programs and present photometry for 17
globular clusters and 3 open clusters in a SDSS value-added catalog. Our
photometry and cluster fiducial sequences are on the native SDSS 2.5-meter
ugriz photometric system, and the fiducial sequences can be directly applied to
the SDSS photometry without relying upon any transformations. Model photometry
for red giant branch and main-sequence stars obtained by Girardi et al. cannot
be matched simultaneously to fiducial sequences; their colors differ by
~0.02-0.05 mag. Good agreement (< ~0.02 mag in colors) is found with Clem et
al. empirical fiducial sequences in u'g'r'i'z' when using the transformation

The SEGUE Stellar Parameter Pipeline. II. Validation with Galactic Globular and Open Clusters
We validate the performance and accuracy of the current SEGUE (Sloan
Extension for Galactic Understanding and Exploration) Stellar Parameter
Pipeline (SSPP), which determines stellar atmospheric parameters (effective
temperature, surface gravity, and metallicity) by comparing derived overall
metallicities and radial velocities from selected likely members of three
globular clusters (M 13, M 15, and M 2) and two open clusters (NGC 2420 and M
67) to the literature values. Spectroscopic and photometric data obtained
during the course of the original Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS-I) and its
first extension (SDSS-II/SEGUE) are used to determine stellar radial velocities
and atmospheric parameter estimates for stars in these clusters. Based on the
scatter in the metallicities derived for the members of each cluster, we
quantify the typical uncertainty of the SSPP values, sigma([Fe/H]) = 0.13 dex
for stars in the range of 4500 K < Teff < 7500 K and 2.0 < log g < 5.0, at
least over the metallicity interval spanned by the clusters studied (-2.3 <
[Fe/H] < 0). The surface gravities and effective temperatures derived by the
SSPP are also compared with those estimated from the comparison of the
color-magnitude diagrams with stellar evolution models; we find satisfactory
agreement. At present, the SSPP underestimates [Fe/H] for
near-solar-metallicity stars, represented by members of M 67 in this study, by

A Compilation of Strategies for Implementing Clinical Innovations in Health and Mental Health
Efforts to identify, develop, refine, and test strategies to disseminate and implement evidence-based treatments have been prioritized in order to improve the quality of health and mental healthcare delivery. However, this task is complicated by an implementation science literature characterized by inconsistent language use and inadequate descriptions of implementation strategies. This article brings more depth and clarity to implementation research and practice by presenting a consolidated compilation of discrete implementation strategies, based upon a review of 205 sources published between 1995 and 2011. The resulting compilation includes 68 implementation strategies and definitions, which are grouped according to six key implementation processes: planning, educating, financing, restructuring, managing quality, and attending to the policy context. This consolidated compilation can serve as a reference to stakeholders who wish to implement clinical innovations in health and mental healthcare and can facilitate the development of multifaceted, multilevel implementation plans that are tailored to local contexts
First-Year Spectroscopy for the SDSS-II Supernova Survey
This paper presents spectroscopy of supernovae discovered in the first season
of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey-II Supernova Survey. This program searches for
and measures multi-band light curves of supernovae in the redshift range z =
0.05 - 0.4, complementing existing surveys at lower and higher redshifts. Our
goal is to better characterize the supernova population, with a particular
focus on SNe Ia, improving their utility as cosmological distance indicators
and as probes of dark energy. Our supernova spectroscopy program features
rapid-response observations using telescopes of a range of apertures, and
provides confirmation of the supernova and host-galaxy types as well as precise
redshifts. We describe here the target identification and prioritization, data
reduction, redshift measurement, and classification of 129 SNe Ia, 16
spectroscopically probable SNe Ia, 7 SNe Ib/c, and 11 SNe II from the first
season. We also describe our efforts to measure and remove the substantial host

Sloan Digital Sky Survey Imaging of Low Galactic Latitude Fields: Technical Summary and Data Release
The Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) mosaic camera and telescope have obtained
five-band optical-wavelength imaging near the Galactic plane outside of the
nominal survey boundaries. These additional data were obtained during
commissioning and subsequent testing of the SDSS observing system, and they
provide unique wide-area imaging data in regions of high obscuration and star
formation, including numerous young stellar objects, Herbig-Haro objects and
young star clusters. Because these data are outside the Survey regions in the
Galactic caps, they are not part of the standard SDSS data releases. This paper
presents imaging data for 832 square degrees of sky (including repeats), in the
star-forming regions of Orion, Taurus, and Cygnus. About 470 square degrees are
now released to the public, with the remainder to follow at the time of SDSS
Data Release 4. The public data in Orion include the star-forming region NGC
