    Leveraging Presence in the Design of Mobile Services: Challenges, Opportunities, and Value Creation

    Recent industry white papers explore presence as one of the hottest, most valuable design trends for mobile services that has only recently been leveraged in designing mobile services. Building on this viewpoint and drawing on prior communication research, we show that presence is a much richer construct than these white papers suggest, and we more fully explore the application of three types of presence - physical presence, social presence, and self-presence - to mobile services design and to the corresponding opportunities for value creation. We present a series of design challenges to incorporating presence and develop the opportunities for overcoming these challenges. The implications of designing with presence are 1) a greater awareness of and response to the usersñ€ℱ needs and behaviors; 2) strategies for top-down design that leverages this awareness; and 3) methods for integrating unique features of mobile devices based on user and environment-driven factors rather than technology-driven factors. Numerous real-world examples illustrate both the complete nature of presence and its application to mobile services

    Incorporating Ethics and Social Responsibility in IS Education

    This paper discusses the importance of ethics and social responsibility in information systems (IS) education. The many public scandals of corporate misconduct have increased the need for more emphasis to be placed on ethics and ethical issues in IS education. The authors describe how the inclusion of ethics and social responsibility in the IS curriculum enhances IS education and discuss the core issues to be addressed, including: professional conduct, privacy, intellectual property, cybercrime, impact on humans, freedom of speech, and “Green” computing issues. The authors also introduce the papers presented in this special issue and challenge IS educators to increase their emphasis on ethics and social responsibility in their classes

    Development of an Extra-vehicular (EVA) Infrared (IR) Camera Inspection System

    Designed to fulfill a critical inspection need for the Space Shuttle Program, the EVA IR Camera System can detect crack and subsurface defects in the Reinforced Carbon-Carbon (RCC) sections of the Space Shuttle s Thermal Protection System (TPS). The EVA IR Camera performs this detection by taking advantage of the natural thermal gradients induced in the RCC by solar flux and thermal emission from the Earth. This instrument is a compact, low-mass, low-power solution (1.2cm3, 1.5kg, 5.0W) for TPS inspection that exceeds existing requirements for feature detection. Taking advantage of ground-based IR thermography techniques, the EVA IR Camera System provides the Space Shuttle program with a solution that can be accommodated by the existing inspection system. The EVA IR Camera System augments the visible and laser inspection systems and finds cracks and subsurface damage that is not measurable by the other sensors, and thus fills a critical gap in the Space Shuttle s inspection needs. This paper discusses the on-orbit RCC inspection measurement concept and requirements, and then presents a detailed description of the EVA IR Camera System design

    Canada’s New Open Access Policy: Integrating Libraries into Open Scholarship

    Canada’s new Open Access policy requires government-funded researchers — and encourages all Canadian researchers — to make their work publicly accessible by either publishing in Open Access journals or archiving it in repositories. This policy signals that Open Access is now a default setting for research in Canada and presents tremendous opportunities for libraries to support open scholarship through outreach, advocacy, support services and infrastructure. This presentation will explore policy, practice and implications for funders, institutions and researchers. We will focus on how libraries can facilitate the cultural shift to open research by raising awareness of the benefits of open scholarship, promoting institutional and subject repositories, and advising on copyright and intellectual property matters. We will share strategies for addressing concerns and/or barriers to Open Access with faculty and other key stakeholders, and discuss implications for libraries as partners in the scholarly communication process

    Effectiveness of a community football programme on improving physiological markers of health in a hard-to-reach male population: the role of exercise intensity

The present study evaluated the effectiveness of participation in recreational football during a community health programme, on physiological markers of health within a hard to reach population. Nine men (Age: 33 ± 9 years, Mass: 75.4 ± 13.7 kg, Height: 1.74 ± 0.07 m and Body Fat: 19 ± 2%) were recruited to participate in the study in collaboration with an English Premier League Football Club. Participants completed the 12-week football-based programme which included two coached football sessions each week. Physiological tests for blood pressure, resting heart rate, cholesterol and an anthropometrical test for body composition were completed at three time points during the study (Weeks – 1, 6 and 12) in an attempt to evaluate the impact of the intervention on health. During each training session, measurements of intensity (%HRmax, identified from the yoyo intermittent level 1 test), duration and rating of perceived exertion were made. The 12-week programme (mean HRmax throughout programme = 75 ± 4% beats min−1; mean RPE throughout programme = 6 ± 1) elicited few changes in physiological markers of health with the only significant change been a decrease in resting heart rate from weeks 6 to 12 (87 ± 22 beats min−1 at week-6, to 72 ± 17 beats min−1; p < 0.05). These data would suggest that the current community football-related health project was not effective in improving physiological markers of health, but was able to maintain their level of health. A lack of improvement may be due to the low intensity of sessions and a lack of coach education for the promotion of sessions that aim to improve health

    Who Gained, who Lost? The Distributional Impact of COVID-19 Government Support for Business

    Government support to business during the COVID-19 pandemic was consistently justified on the basis of general interests, such as ‘protecting jobs and livelihoods’ and helping to ‘ease the financial burden for businesses and the UK population’. But these rather abstract, universal goals potentially gloss over important questions about the redistributive effects of government subsidies. Given present efforts to tackling public sector debt, how money under government support schemes has been used, and to whose benefit, are key questions. In this report we examine how different stakeholders at the UK’s largest businesses – board executives, shareholders, and workers – fared during and after the peak of the pandemic. Among other things, we explore how FTSE 350 companies in receipt of government supports adjusted executive compensation packages and payments to shareholders, how this compared to businesses that did not take government money, and how pay differences between chief executives and ordinary workers changed going into and coming out of the pandemic. In addition, we look at government support scheme restrictions on executive pay and capital distributions to shareholders (dividend payments) and examine the challenges involved in tracking which companies had taken advantage of government supports and by how much. Our findings indicate the existence of a post-pandemic restitution culture in executive pay, in which companies across the FTSE 350 have sought to make up losses in executive pay experienced during the peak of the pandemic. This restitution culture has reversed a longer run decline in executive pay and, significantly, is particularly apparent in companies that participated in government support schemes, which have seen substantial executive pay increases

    Take a walk on the wild side: Exploring, identifying, and developing consultancy expertise with elite performance team leaders

    Objectives: Stemming from sport psychology’s recent shift to examine the effective management of elite sports team organizations, the extensive, significant, and complex challenges faced by those with responsibility for team performance have been emphasized. Recognizing that most work in this budding area has been theoretical in nature, our contribution to this special issue consequently identifies and critically evaluates some implications for excellence in practitioners who support leaders of elite sport performance teams. Method: Narrative review and commentary. Results and Conclusions: To survive and succeed, leaders of elite teams must: (a) negotiate complex and contested socio-political dynamics both within and outside their performance department; (b) make impactful and consistent real-time decisions; and (c) continually reinforce and protect their programme. To provide an optimally impactful and valued service, sport psychologists must therefore be able to advise on a broad and politically-astute leadership style and, most critically for consultancy excellence: (a) work within a professional judgment and decision making model; (b) facilitate the leader’s adaptive expertise and nested decision making; and (c) operate a proactive, forthright, and straight approach to ethical considerations. Based on these implications, we conclude by providing suggestions for the training and development of applied consultants

    Infrared On-Orbit RCC Inspection With the EVA IR Camera: Development of Flight Hardware From a COTS System

    In November 2004, NASA's Space Shuttle Program approved the development of the Extravehicular (EVA) Infrared (IR) Camera to test the application of infrared thermography to on-orbit reinforced carbon-carbon (RCC) damage detection. A multi-center team composed of members from NASA's Johnson Space Center (JSC), Langley Research Center (LaRC), and Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) was formed to develop the camera system and plan a flight test. The initial development schedule called for the delivery of the system in time to support STS-115 in late 2005. At the request of Shuttle Program managers and the flight crews, the team accelerated its schedule and delivered a certified EVA IR Camera system in time to support STS-114 in July 2005 as a contingency. The development of the camera system, led by LaRC, was based on the Commercial-Off-the-Shelf (COTS) FLIR S65 handheld infrared camera. An assessment of the S65 system in regards to space-flight operation was critical to the project. This paper discusses the space-flight assessment and describes the significant modifications required for EVA use by the astronaut crew. The on-orbit inspection technique will be demonstrated during the third EVA of STS-121 in September 2005 by imaging damaged RCC samples mounted in a box in the Shuttle's cargo bay
