Updating DL-Lite ontologies through first-order queries
In this paper we study instance-level update in DL-LiteA, the description logic underlying the OWL 2 QL standard. In particular we focus on formula-based approaches to ABox insertion and deletion. We show that DL-LiteA, which is well-known for enjoying first-order rewritability of query answering, enjoys a first-order rewritability property also for updates. That is, every update can be reformulated into a set of insertion and deletion instructions computable through a nonrecursive datalog program. Such a program is readily translatable into a first-order query over the ABox considered as a database, and hence into SQL. By exploiting this result, we implement an update component for DLLiteA-based systems and perform some experiments showing that the approach works in practice.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft
Two Experimental Tests of the Halperin-Lubensky-Ma Effect at the Nematic-Smectic-A Phase Transition
We have conducted two quantitative tests of predictions based on the
Halperin-Lubensky-Ma (HLM) theory of fluctuation-induced first-order phase
transitions. First, we explore the effect of an external magnetic field on the
nematic-smectic-A (NA) transition in a liquid crystal. Second, we examine the
dependence of the first-order discontinuity as a function of mixture
concentration in pure 8CB and three 8CB-10CB mixtures. We find the first
quantitative evidence for deviations from the HLM theory.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure
A Quasi-Classical Model of Intermediate Velocity Particle Production in Asymmetric Heavy Ion Reactions
The particle emission at intermediate velocities in mass asymmetric reactions
is studied within the framework of classical molecular dynamics. Two reactions
in the Fermi energy domain were modelized, Ni+C and Ni+Au at 34.5
MeV/nucleon. The availability of microscopic correlations at all times allowed
a detailed study of the fragment formation process. Special attention was paid
to the physical origin of fragments and emission timescales, which allowed us
to disentangle the different processes involved in the mid-rapidity particle
production. Consequently, a clear distinction between a prompt pre- equilibrium
emission and a delayed aligned asymmetric breakup of the heavier partner of the

Nanomaterials for the cleaning and pH adjustment of vegetable tanned leather
Leather artifacts in historical collections and archives are often contaminated by physical changes such as soiling, which alter their appearance and readability, and by chemical changes which occur on ageing and give rise to excessive proportion of acids that promote hydrolysis of collagen, eventually leading to gelatinization and loss of mechanical properties. However, both cleaning and pH adjustment of vegetable tanned leather pose a great challenge for conservators, owing to the sensitivity of these materials to the action of solvents, especially water-based formulations and alkaline chemicals. In this study the cleaning of historical leather samples was optimized by confining an oil-in-water (o/w) nanostructured fluid in a highly retentive chemical hydrogel, which allows the controlled release of the cleaning fluid on sensitive surfaces. The chemical gel exhibits optimal viscoelasticity, which facilitates its removal after the application without leaving residues on the object. Nanoparticles of calcium hydroxide and lactate, dispersed in 2-propanol, were used to adjust the pH up to the natural value of leather, preventing too high alkalinity which causes swelling of fibers and denaturation of the collagen. The treated samples were characterized using Scanning Electron Microscopy (FE SEM), controlled environment dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA-RH), and infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR). The analytical assessment validated the use of tools derived from colloid and materials science for the preservation of collagen-based artifacts
A quasi-diagonal approach to the estimation of Lyapunov spectra for spatio-temporal systems from multivariate time series
We describe methods of estimating the entire Lyapunov spectrum of a spatially
extended system from multivariate time-series observations. Provided that the
coupling in the system is short range, the Jacobian has a banded structure and
can be estimated using spatially localised reconstructions in low embedding
dimensions. This circumvents the ``curse of dimensionality'' that prevents the
accurate reconstruction of high-dimensional dynamics from observed time series.
The technique is illustrated using coupled map lattices as prototype models for
spatio-temporal chaos and is found to work even when the coupling is not

Exposure to Unpredictability and Mental Health: Validation of the Brief Version of the Questionnaire of Unpredictability in Childhood (QUIC-5) in English and Spanish
Unpredictability is increasingly recognized as a primary dimension of early life adversity affecting lifespan mental health trajectories; screening for these experiences is therefore vital. The Questionnaire of Unpredictability in Childhood (QUIC) is a 38-item tool that measures unpredictability in childhood in social, emotional and physical domains. The available evidence indicates that exposure to unpredictable experiences measured with the QUIC predicts internalizing symptoms including depression and anxiety. The purpose of the present study was to validate English and Spanish brief versions (QUIC-5) suitable for administration in time-limited settings (e.g., clinical care settings, large-scale epidemiological studies). Five representative items were identified from the QUIC and their psychometric properties examined. The predictive validity of the QUIC-5 was then compared to the QUIC by examining mental health in four cohorts: (1) English-speaking adult women assessed at 6-months postpartum (N = 116), (2) English-speaking male veterans (N = 95), (3) English-speaking male and female adolescents (N = 155), and (4) Spanish-speaking male and female adults (N = 285). The QUIC-5 demonstrated substantial variance in distributions in each of the cohorts and is correlated on average 0.84 (râs = 0.81â0.87) with the full 38-item version. Furthermore, the QUIC-5 predicted internalizing symptoms (anxiety and depression) in all cohorts with similar effect sizes (râs = 0.16â0.39; all pâs \u3c 0.05) to the full versions (râs = 0.19â0.42; all pâs \u3c 0.05). In sum, the QUIC-5 exhibits good psychometric properties and is a valid alternative to the full QUIC. These findings support the future use of the QUIC-5 in clinical and research settings as a concise way to measure unpredictability, identify risk of psychopathology, and intervene accordingly
Angular momentum sharing in dissipative collisions
Light charged particles emitted by the projectile-like fragment were measured
in the direct and reverse collision of Nb and Sn at 25 AMeV. The
experimental multiplicities of Hydrogen and Helium particles as a function of
the primary mass of the emitting fragment show evidence for a correlation with
net mass transfer. The ratio of Hydrogen and Helium multiplicities points to a
dependence of the angular momentum sharing on the net mass transfer.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figure
IGEC2: A 17-month search for gravitational wave bursts in 2005-2007
We present here the results of a 515 days long run of the IGEC2 observatory,
consisting of the four resonant mass detectors ALLEGRO, AURIGA, EXPLORER and
NAUTILUS. The reported results are related to the fourfold observation time
from Nov. 6 2005 until Apr. 14 2007, when Allegro ceased its operation. This
period overlapped with the first long term observations performed by the LIGO
interferometric detectors. The IGEC observations aim at the identification of
gravitational wave candidates with high confidence, keeping the false alarm
rate at the level of 1 per century, and high duty cycle, namely 57% with all
four sites and 94% with at least three sites in simultaneous observation. The
network data analysis is based on time coincidence searches over at least three
detectors: the four 3-fold searches and the 4-fold one are combined in a
logical OR. We exchanged data with the usual blind procedure, by applying a
unique confidential time offset to the events in each set of data. The
accidental background was investigated by performing sets of 10^8 coincidence
analyses per each detector configuration on off-source data, obtained by
shifting the time series of each detector. The thresholds of the five searches
were tuned so as to control the overall false alarm rate to 1/century. When the
confidential time shifts was disclosed, no gravitational wave candidate was
found in the on-source data. As an additional output of this search, we make
available to other observatories the list of triple coincidence found below
search thresholds, corresponding to a false alarm rate of 1/month.Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures Accepted for publication on Phys. Rev.
Flow angle from intermediate mass fragment measurements
Directed sideward flow of light charged particles and intermediate mass
fragments was measured in different symmetric reactions at bombarding energies
from 90 to 800 AMeV. The flow parameter is found to increase with the charge of
the detected fragment up to Z = 3-4 and then turns into saturation for heavier
fragments. Guided by simple simulations of an anisotropic expanding thermal
source, we show that the value at saturation can provide a good estimate of the
flow angle, , in the participant region. It is found that
depends strongly on the impact parameter. The excitation
function of reveals striking deviations from the ideal
hydrodynamical scaling. The data exhibit a steep rise of \Theta_{\flow} to a
maximum at around 250-400 AMeV, followed by a moderate decrease as the
