Influence of the driving mechanism on the response of systems with athermal dynamics: the example of the random-field Ising model
We investigate the influence of the driving mechanism on the hysteretic
response of systems with athermal dynamics. In the framework of local-mean
field theory at finite temperature (but neglecting thermallly activated
processes), we compare the rate-independent hysteresis loops obtained in the
random field Ising model (RFIM) when controlling either the external magnetic
field or the extensive magnetization . Two distinct behaviors are
observed, depending on disorder strength. At large disorder, the -driven and
-driven protocols yield identical hysteresis loops in the thermodynamic
limit. At low disorder, when the -driven magnetization curve is
discontinuous (due to the presence of a macroscopic avalanche), the -driven
loop is re-entrant while the induced field exhibits strong intermittent
fluctuations and is only weakly self-averaging. The relevance of these results
to the experimental observations in ferromagnetic materials, shape memory
alloys, and other disordered systems is discussed.Comment: 11 pages, 11 figure
Melanosis and quality attributes of chill stored farm raised whiteleg shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei)
Loss of market value of shrimp is mainly due to the formation of black spot called melanosis. A study was conducted for 14 days to determine the extent of melanosis and quality changes during that period of freshly har-vested whiteleg shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) under chilled storage (2?). Among quality parameters, total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N), thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBAR-S), were varied from 13.17 mg % to 44.50 mg % and 0.04to 2.57 mg malondehaldehyde/kg of fat respectively whereas melanosis score and metric chroma (C) exhibited significant increases during chilled storage (P<0.05). There was a slight increase in moisture, crude fat and pH from 73.96 % to 74.57 %, 1.05 % to 1.14 % and 6.52 to 7.60 respectively at 14th day of storage. Loss of protein from 22.51 % to 21.28 % may be due to decrease in available amino acids during chilled storage and total plate count (TPC) showed gradual increase of bacterial load up to 1.73*107 log CFU/g at the end of chilled storage. The sensory analysis by panellists indicated, the acceptability of white leg shrimp was up to 6 days in chilled condition and formation of black spot is one of the major parameter for rejection by the panellists
Dopant-dependent impact of Mn-site doping on the critical-state manganites: R0.6Sr0.4MnO3 (R=La, Nd, Sm, and Gd)
Versatile features of impurity doping effects on perovskite manganites,
SrMnO, have been investigated with varying the doing
species as well as the -dependent one-electron bandwidth. In
ferromagnetic-metallic manganites (=La, Nd, and Sm), a few percent of Fe
substitution dramatically decreases the ferromagnetic transition temperature,
leading to a spin glass insulating state with short-range charge-orbital
correlation. For each species, the phase diagram as a function of Fe
concentration is closely similar to that for SrMnO
obtained by decreasing the ionic radius of site, indicating that Fe doping
in the phase-competing region weakens the ferromagnetic double-exchange
interaction, relatively to the charge-orbital ordering instability. We have
also found a contrastive impact of Cr (or Ru) doping on a spin-glass insulating
manganite (=Gd). There, the impurity-induced ferromagnetic magnetization is
observed at low temperatures as a consequence of the collapse of the inherent
short-range charge-orbital ordering, while Fe doping plays only a minor role.
The observed opposite nature of impurity doping may be attributed to the
difference in magnitude of the antiferromagnetic interaction between the doped
ions.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figure
Effective Field Theories on Non-Commutative Space-Time
We consider Yang-Mills theories formulated on a non-commutative space-time
described by a space-time dependent anti-symmetric field .
Using Seiberg-Witten map techniques we derive the leading order operators for
the effective field theories that take into account the effects of such a
background field. These effective theories are valid for a weakly
non-commutative space-time. It is remarkable to note that already simple models
for can help to loosen the bounds on space-time
non-commutativity coming from low energy physics. Non-commutative geometry
formulated in our framework is a potential candidate for new physics beyond the
standard model.Comment: 22 pages, 1 figur

Search for rare and forbidden decays of charm and charmed-strange mesons to final states h^+- e^-+ e^+
We have searched for flavor-changing neutral current decays and
lepton-number-violating decays of D^+ and D^+_s mesons to final states of the
form h^+- e^-+ e^+, where h is either \pi or K. We use the complete samples of
CLEO-c open-charm data, corresponding to integrated luminosities of 818 pb^-1
at the center-of-mass energy E_CM = 3.774 GeV containing 2.4 x 10^6 D^+D^-
pairs and 602 pb^-1 at E_CM = 4.170 GeV containing 0.6 x 10^6 D^*+-_s D^-+_s
pairs. No signal is observed in any channel, and we obtain 90% confidence level
upper limits on branching fractions B(D^+ --> \pi^+ e^+ e^-) < 5.9 x 10^-6,
B(D^+ --> \pi^- e^+ e^+) K^+ e^+ e^-) < 3.0 x 10^-6,
B(D^+ --> K^- e^+ e^+) \pi^+ e^+ e^-) < 2.2 x 10^-5,
B(D^+_s --> \pi^- e^+ e^+) K^+ e^+ e^-) < 5.2 x
10^-5, and B(D^+_s --> K^- e^+ e^+) < 1.7 x 10^-5.Comment: 9 pages, available through http://www.lns.cornell.edu/public/CLNS
Observation of Upsilon(2S) -> eta Upsilon(1S) and search for related transitions
We report the first observation of the transition Upsilon(2S) > eta
Upsilon(1S), with branching fraction B=(2.1+0.7-0.6(stat.)+-0.3(syst.)) x
10^{-4} and statistical significance 5.3 sigma. Data were acquired with the
CLEO detector at the CESR e+ e- symmetric collider. This is the first process
observed involving a b-quark spin flip. Upper limits at 90% confidence level
for related processes, in units of 10^{-4}, are B[Upsilon(2S) -> pi0

Cognitive impairment induced by delta9-tetrahydrocannabinol occurs through heteromers between cannabinoid CB1 and serotonin 5-HT2A receptors
Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the main psychoactive compound of marijuana, induces numerous undesirable effects, including memory impairments, anxiety, and dependence. Conversely, THC also has potentially therapeutic effects, including analgesia, muscle relaxation, and neuroprotection. However, the mechanisms that dissociate these responses are still not known. Using mice lacking the serotonin receptor 5-HT2A, we revealed that the analgesic and amnesic effects of THC are independent of each other: while amnesia induced by THC disappears in the mutant mice, THC can still promote analgesia in these animals. In subsequent molecular studies, we showed that in specific brain regions involved in memory formation, the receptors for THC and the 5-HT2A receptors work together by physically interacting with each other. Experimentally interfering with this interaction prevented the memory deficits induced by THC, but not its analgesic properties. Our results highlight a novel mechanism by which the beneficial analgesic properties of THC can be dissociated from its cognitive side effects
Coherent diffraction of single Rice Dwarf virus particles using hard X-rays at the Linac Coherent Light Source
Single particle diffractive imaging data from Rice Dwarf Virus (RDV) were recorded using the Coherent X-ray Imaging (CXI) instrument at the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS). RDV was chosen as it is a wellcharacterized model system, useful for proof-of-principle experiments, system optimization and algorithm development. RDV, an icosahedral virus of about 70 nm in diameter, was aerosolized and injected into the approximately 0.1 mu m diameter focused hard X-ray beam at the CXI instrument of LCLS. Diffraction patterns from RDV with signal to 5.9 angstrom ngstrom were recorded. The diffraction data are available through the Coherent X-ray Imaging Data Bank (CXIDB) as a resource for algorithm development, the contents of which are described here.11Ysciescopu
