Thermo-mechanical analysis of dental silicone polymers
Soft lining materials are used to replace the inner surface of a conventional complete denture, especially for weak elderly patients, with delicate health who cannot tolerate the hard acrylic denture base. Most of these patients have fragile supporting mucosa, excessive residual ridge resorption, particularly on the mandibular arch. The application of a soft liner to the mandibular denture allows absorbing impact forces during mastication and relieving oral mucosa. Actually, the silicone rubbers constitute the main family of commercialised soft lining materials. This study was conducted to understand the relationships between the mechanical properties and the physical structure of polysiloxanes. For this purpose, a series of polysiloxanes of various chemical compositions have been investigated. The evolution of their physical structure as a function of temperature has been followed by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). In order to facilitate comparisons, the mechanical modulus has been analysed upon the same heating rate using dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). Polysiloxanes actually commercialised as soft denture liners are three-dimensional networks: the flexibility of chains allows a crystalline organisation in an amorphous phase leading to the low value of the shear modulus. The dynamic mechanical analysis shows that they are used in the rubbery state. So, polysiloxanes have steady mechanical properties during physiological utilisation
Associations of social and economic and pregnancy exposures with blood pressure in UK White British and Pakistani children age 4/5.
South Asians have higher rates of coronary heart disease (CHD) than White European individuals. Blood pressure (BP) is one of the most important risk factors for CHD and ethnic differences in BP have been identified in childhood. Early life exposures could explain some of these differences. We examined associations of family social and economic and maternal pregnancy exposures and BP at age 4/5 in 1644 White British and 1824 Pakistani mother-offspring pairs from the Born in Bradford study. We found that systolic BP was similar but diastolic BP was higher, in Pakistani compared to White British children (adjusted mean differences were -0.170 mmHg 95% CI -0.884, 0.543 for systolic BP; 1.328 mmHg 95% CI 0.592, 2.064 for diastolic BP). Social and economic exposures were not associated with BP in either ethnic group. Maternal BMI was positively associated with BP in both groups but this association was mediated by child BMI. Only gestational hypertension was associated with child systolic and diastolic BP and this was only identified in Pakistani mother-offspring pairs. These findings suggest that Pakistani populations may have a different BP trajectory compared to White British groups and that this is already evident at age 4/5 years
The distinctiveness of employment relations within multinationals: political games and social compromises within multinationals’ subsidiaries in Germany and Belgium
This work makes a theoretical contribution to our understanding of the strategic mechanisms that enable subsidiary management and union agency to exploit ambiguities in the subnational competitive context impacting labour flexibility-security concerns. In so doing, the article contributes to the distinctiveness of employment relations through scrutiny of the internal regime competition that fosters political games in MNCs. Studying the dynamics, we identify the set of structuring conditions governing political games, and explain why some workplace regimes generate social compromises whilst others do not. We reveal a set of strategic conditions (i.e. technology, embeddedness and MNC control) upon which compromise is built in six German and Belgian subsidiaries of four MNCs. Our analysis suggests that subsidiary control modes through expatriates and local embeddedness act as key mechanisms through which the effects of wider strategic drivers influence the form of social compromise
The Mid-Infrared Instrument for the James Webb Space Telescope, III: MIRIM, The MIRI Imager
In this article, we describe the MIRI Imager module (MIRIM), which provides
broad-band imaging in the 5 - 27 microns wavelength range for the James Webb
Space Telescope. The imager has a 0"11 pixel scale and a total unobstructed
view of 74"x113". The remainder of its nominal 113"x113" field is occupied by
the coronagraphs and the low resolution spectrometer. We present the instrument
optical and mechanical design. We show that the test data, as measured during
the test campaigns undertaken at CEA-Saclay, at the Rutherford Appleton
Laboratory, and at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, indicate that the
instrument complies with its design requirements and goals. We also discuss the
operational requirements (multiple dithers and exposures) needed for optimal
scientific utilization of the MIRIM.Comment: 29 pages, 9 figure
A new interferometric study of four exoplanet host stars : {\theta} Cygni, 14 Andromedae, {\upsilon} Andromedae and 42 Draconis
Studying exoplanet host stars is of the utmost importance to establish the
link between the presence of exoplanets around various types of stars and to
understand the respective evolution of stars and exoplanets.
Using the limb-darkened diameter (LDD) obtained from interferometric data, we
determine the fundamental parameters of four exoplanet host stars. We are
particularly interested in the F4 main-sequence star, {\theta} Cyg, for which
Kepler has recently revealed solar-like oscillations that are unexpected for
this type of star. Furthermore, recent photometric and spectroscopic
measurements with SOPHIE and ELODIE (OHP) show evidence of a quasi-periodic
radial velocity of \sim150 days. Models of this periodic change in radial
velocity predict either a complex planetary system orbiting the star, or a new
and unidentified stellar pulsation mode.
We performed interferometric observations of {\theta} Cyg, 14 Andromedae,
{\upsilon} Andromedae and 42 Draconis for two years with VEGA/CHARA (Mount
Wilson, California) in several three-telescope configurations. We measured
accurate limb darkened diameters and derived their radius, mass and temperature
using empirical laws.
We obtain new accurate fundamental parameters for stars 14 And, {\upsilon}
And and 42 Dra. We also obtained limb darkened diameters with a minimum
precision of \sim 1.3%, leading to minimum planet masses of Msini=5.33\pm 0.57,
0.62 \pm 0.09 and 3.79\pm0.29 MJup for 14 And b, {\upsilon} And b and 42 Dra b,
respectively. The interferometric measurements of {\theta} Cyg show a
significant diameter variability that remains unexplained up to now. We propose
that the presence of these discrepancies in the interferometric data is caused
by either an intrinsic variation of the star or an unknown close companion

The Madrileño ejke : a study of the perception and production of velarized /s/ in Madrid
Aspiration of coda /s/ has been widely studied throughout the Spanish-speaking world, although within the Madrid dialect there have only been two studies quantifying /s/ realization (Momcilovic, 2005; Turnham & Lafford, 1995). In the first, Turnham and Lafford (1995) examine the extralinguistic factors that condition /s/ realization, considering the nonstandard variants of velarized and elided /s/ in their analysis. In contrast, Momcilovic (2005) does not include the velarized /s/ as a specific category in her study, but rather quantifies rates of aspirated, elided and assimilated /s/. In this way, the actual variants present and their distribution within the Spanish of Madrid has not been clearly established. The velarized /s/, of particular interest in this dissertation, is distinct from most cases of /s/ weakening because it does not fit into the typological weaking paradigm of [s] > [h] > [ø], and furthermore may not be a case of lenition at all (Henriksen & Harper, 2016). Given the curious /s/ variant present in the Madrid dialect, the current investigation sought to learn more of the social meaning and perception of the velarized /s/, utilizing the matched guise language attitudes technique to do so. It is found that the velarized /s/ is a marker of Madrileño identity, and that it is mainly associated with negative connotations, most strongly observed among the Madrileño participants. This dissertation contributes the first language attitudes study conducted on /s/ in Madrid, revealing both the social meaning attached to velarized /s/ and the importance of the speakers’ social characteristics in their perception of this variant. Secondly, a production study was conducted in order to offer a clearer picture of the coda /s/ variants present in the Madrid dialect and their respective distribution. The significant factors found to condition /s/ realization include syllabic position, reading time, reading order and the number of Madrileño grandparents a speaker has. Most importantly here, it is seen that the aspirated variant actually appears more frequently than the velarized /s/. Together these studies contribute a greater understanding of velarized /s/, filling a lacuna in what was previously known of coda /s/ in the Madrid dialect.Spanish and Portugues
The genome and transcriptome of Trichormus sp NMC-1: insights into adaptation to extreme environments on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau
The Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP) has the highest biodiversity for an extreme environment worldwide, and provides an ideal natural laboratory to study adaptive evolution. In this study, we generated a draft genome sequence of cyanobacteria Trichormus sp. NMC-1 in the QTP and performed whole transcriptome sequencing under low temperature to investigate the genetic mechanism by which T. sp. NMC-1 adapted to the specific environment. Its genome sequence was 5.9 Mb with a G+C content of 39.2% and encompassed a total of 5362 CDS. A phylogenomic tree indicated that this strain belongs to the Trichormus and Anabaena cluster. Genome comparison between T. sp. NMC-1 and six relatives showed that functionally unknown genes occupied a much higher proportion (28.12%) of the T. sp. NMC-1 genome. In addition, functions of specific, significant positively selected, expanded orthogroups, and differentially expressed genes involved in signal transduction, cell wall/membrane biogenesis, secondary metabolite biosynthesis, and energy production and conversion were analyzed to elucidate specific adaptation traits. Further analyses showed that the CheY-like genes, extracellular polysaccharide and mycosporine-like amino acids might play major roles in adaptation to harsh environments. Our findings indicate that sophisticated genetic mechanisms are involved in cyanobacterial adaptation to the extreme environment of the QTP
Destabilization of the thermohaline circulation by transient perturbations to the hydrological cycle
We reconsider the problem of the stability of the thermohaline circulation as
described by a two-dimensional Boussinesq model with mixed boundary conditions.
We determine how the stability properties of the system depend on the intensity
of the hydrological cycle. We define a two-dimensional parameters' space
descriptive of the hydrology of the system and determine, by considering
suitable quasi-static perturbations, a bounded region where multiple equilibria
of the system are realized. We then focus on how the response of the system to
finite-amplitude surface freshwater forcings depends on their rate of increase.
We show that it is possible to define a robust separation between slow and fast
regimes of forcing. Such separation is obtained by singling out an estimate of
the critical growth rate for the anomalous forcing, which can be related to the

RPGRIP1 interacts with other retinal disease-causing proteins and has been proposed to have a role in ciliary protein transport; however, its function remains elusive. Here, we describe a new zebrafish model carrying a nonsense mutation in the rpgrip1 gene. Rpgrip1homozygous mutants do not form rod outer segments and display mislocalization of rhodopsin, suggesting a role for RPGRIP1 in rhodopsin-bearing vesicle trafficking. Furthermore, Rab8, the key regulator of rhodopsin ciliary trafficking, was mislocalized in photoreceptor cells of rpgrip1 mutants. The degeneration of rod cells is early onset, followed by the death of cone cells. These phenotypes are similar to that observed in LCA and juvenile RP patients. Our data indicate RPGRIP1 is necessary for rod outer segment development through regulating ciliary protein trafficking. The rpgrip1 mutant zebrafish may provide a platform for developing therapeutic treatments for RP patients.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe
