A qualitative analysis of the contraceptive behavior patterns of adolescent women

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study was twofold. First, this study sought to explore, retrospectively, the development of contraceptive behavior patterns by college women during their adolescent years. The second purpose was to examine the role of self-efficacy in the development of effective contraceptive behavior. In-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted with 60 never married sexually active college females 18 to 22 years of age. During the course of the interview, subjects were guided through a description of relationships in which they were sexually active. This allowed the interviewer to elicit information regarding contraceptive behavior in each relationship and explanations for the behavior. In addition, each subject completed a contraceptive self-efficacy questionnaire for both her first and most recent sexual partner

Value of Grinding Grains and Roughages for Livestock

    Get PDF
This experiment was conducted in cooperation with the departments of Agricultural Engineering, Animal Husbandry and Dairy Husbandry of South Dakota State College. The department of Agricultural Engineering ground the grains and roughages with a burr grinder. For power a tractor was used, such as is found on any farm where grinding is practiced. The departments of Animal Husbandry and Dairy Husbandry fed these ground grains and roughages to livestock of the different kinds. There has been for some time, and there is today a demand for information along these lines because some farmers who have purchased tractors to assist with the farm work are eager to utilize this machinery to the best advantage during the idle period. Naturally, the question of grinding all the roughages and grains grown on the farm before feeding to all kinds of livestock is suggested. This experiment did not include all of the grains and roughages but only some of those that are more commonly grown in the state. We know there are feeds that would be more palatable for some livestock if ground than unground. Palatability is an important factor in all feeding operations. The practice of mixing ground grains and roughages at the time of grinding has been advocated by some; because of this we fed the ground feeds mixed, as well as in separate troughs, to learn whether there was any great advantage in feeding in this manner. Therefore, this bulletin not only includes the advantages and disadvantages of feeding ground grains and ground roughages, as such, in separate troughs but the advantages and disadvantages of feeding the ground feeds mixed. There are more mixed feeds for sale at the present time than ever before. In some cases feeds are mixed while being ground, but in our mixing we aimed to mix the same quantity of each as animals were consuming when the ground feeds were fed in separate troughs. It required time to mix these feeds daily but in figuring the cost of producing 100 pounds of gain we have not included anything for this chore

    Quasi-pseudo-metrization of topological preordered spaces

    Get PDF
We establish that every second countable completely regularly preordered space (E,T,\leq) is quasi-pseudo-metrizable, in the sense that there is a quasi-pseudo-metric p on E for which the pseudo-metric p\veep^-1 induces T and the graph of \leq is exactly the set {(x,y): p(x,y)=0}. In the ordered case it is proved that these spaces can be characterized as being order homeomorphic to subspaces of the ordered Hilbert cube. The connection with quasi-pseudo-metrization results obtained in bitopology is clarified. In particular, strictly quasi-pseudometrizable ordered spaces are characterized as being order homeomorphic to order subspaces of the ordered Hilbert cube.Comment: Latex2e, 20 pages. v2: minor changes in the proof of theorem 2.

Software development process of Neotree - a data capture and decision support system to improve newborn healthcare in low-resource settings

    Get PDF
The global priority of improving neonatal survival could be tackled through the universal implementation of cost-effective maternal and newborn health interventions. Despite 90% of neonatal deaths occurring in low-resource settings, very few evidence-based digital health interventions exist to assist healthcare professionals in clinical decision-making in these settings. To bridge this gap, Neotree was co-developed through an iterative, user-centered design approach in collaboration with healthcare professionals in the UK, Bangladesh, Malawi, and Zimbabwe. It addresses a broad range of neonatal clinical diagnoses and healthcare indicators as opposed to being limited to specific conditions and follows national and international guidelines for newborn care. This digital health intervention includes a mobile application (app) which is designed to be used by healthcare professionals at the bedside. The app enables real-time data capture and provides education in newborn care and clinical decision support via integrated clinical management algorithms. Comprehensive routine patient data are prospectively collected regarding each newborn, as well as maternal data and blood test results, which are used to inform clinical decision making at the bedside. Data dashboards provide healthcare professionals and hospital management a near real-time overview of patient statistics that can be used for healthcare quality improvement purposes. To enable this workflow, the Neotree web editor allows fine-grained customization of the mobile app. The data pipeline manages data flow from the app to secure databases and then to the dashboard. Implemented in three hospitals in two countries so far, Neotree has captured routine data and supported the care of over 21,000 babies and has been used by over 450 healthcare professionals. All code and documentation are open source, allowing adoption and adaptation by clinicians, researchers, and developers

Globetrotting strangles: the unbridled national and international transmission of Streptococcus equi between horses.

    Get PDF
The equine disease strangles, which is characterized by the formation of abscesses in the lymph nodes of the head and neck, is one of the most frequently diagnosed infectious diseases of horses around the world. The causal agent, Streptococcus equi subspecies equi, establishes a persistent infection in approximately 10 % of animals that recover from the acute disease. Such 'carrier' animals appear healthy and are rarely identified during routine veterinary examinations pre-purchase or transit, but can transmit S. equi to naïve animals initiating new episodes of disease. Here, we report the analysis and visualization of phylogenomic and epidemiological data for 670 isolates of S. equi recovered from 19 different countries using a new core-genome multilocus sequence typing (cgMLST) web bioresource. Genetic relationships among all 670 S. equi isolates were determined at high resolution, revealing national and international transmission events that drive this endemic disease in horse populations throughout the world. Our data argue for the recognition of the international importance of strangles by the Office International des Épizooties to highlight the health, welfare and economic cost of this disease. The Pathogenwatch cgMLST web bioresource described herein is available for tailored genomic analysis of populations of S. equi and its close relative S. equi subspecies zooepidemicus that are recovered from horses and other animals, including humans, throughout the world. Finishing the euchromatic sequence of the human genome

    Get PDF
The sequence of the human genome encodes the genetic instructions for human physiology, as well as rich information about human evolution. In 2001, the International Human Genome Sequencing Consortium reported a draft sequence of the euchromatic portion of the human genome. Since then, the international collaboration has worked to convert this draft into a genome sequence with high accuracy and nearly complete coverage. Here, we report the result of this finishing process. The current genome sequence (Build 35) contains 2.85 billion nucleotides interrupted by only 341 gaps. It covers ∼99% of the euchromatic genome and is accurate to an error rate of ∼1 event per 100,000 bases. Many of the remaining euchromatic gaps are associated with segmental duplications and will require focused work with new methods. The near-complete sequence, the first for a vertebrate, greatly improves the precision of biological analyses of the human genome including studies of gene number, birth and death. Notably, the human enome seems to encode only 20,000-25,000 protein-coding genes. The genome sequence reported here should serve as a firm foundation for biomedical research in the decades ahead
