    Transverse Bragg-resonant enhancement of modulation and switching

    We demonstrate theoretically that the electrooptic phase retardation, hence, modulation, can be enhanced very substantially in transverse Bragg resonance (TBR) waveguides. This enhancement is due fundamentally to the strong dependence of the dispersion of the TBR waveguide on the Bragg condition. Both theoretical and numerical analysis show that this enhancement can be used to improve the performance of directional coupler switches and electroabsorption modulators, leading potentially to major reductions in the device size or the switching voltage/current

    Consideration of the bioavailability of metal/metalloid species in freshwaters: experiences regarding the implementation of biotic ligand model-based approaches in risk assessment frameworks

    After the scientific development of Biotic Ligand Models (BLMs) in recent decades these models are now considered suitable for implementation in regulatory risk assessment of metals in freshwater bodies. The approach has been developed over several years and has been described in many peer-reviewed publications. The original complex BLMs have been applied in prospective risk assessment reports for metals and metal compounds and are also recommended as suitable concepts for the evaluation of monitoring data in the context of the European Water Framework Directive. Currently, several user-friendly BLM-based bioavailability software tools are available for assessing the aquatic toxicity of a limited number of metals (mainly copper, nickel, and zinc). These tools need only a basic set of water parameters as input (e.g., pH, hardness, dissolved organic matter and dissolved metal concentration). Such tools seem appropriate to foster the implementation in routine water quality assessments. This work aims to review the existing bioavailability-based regulatory approaches and the application of available BLM-based bioavailability tools for this purpose. Advantages and possible drawbacks of these tools (e.g., feasibility, boundaries of validity) are discussed, and recommendations for further implementation are given

    The genome landscape of indigenous African cattle

    Background: The history of African indigenous cattle and their adaptation to environmental and human selection pressure is at the root of their remarkable diversity. Characterization of this diversity is an essential step towards understanding the genomic basis of productivity and adaptation to survival under African farming systems. Results: We analyze patterns of African cattle genetic variation by sequencing 48 genomes from five indigenous populations and comparing them to the genomes of 53 commercial taurine breeds. We find the highest genetic diversity among African zebu and sanga cattle. Our search for genomic regions under selection reveals signatures of selection for environmental adaptive traits. In particular, we identify signatures of selection including genes and/ or pathways controlling anemia and feeding behavior in the trypanotolerant N’Dama, coat color and horn development in Ankole, and heat tolerance and tick resistance across African cattle especially in zebu breeds. Conclusions: Our findings unravel at the genome-wide level, the unique adaptive diversity of African cattle while emphasizing the opportunities for sustainable improvement of livestock productivity on the continent

    Retrospective evaluation of whole exome and genome mutation calls in 746 cancer samples

    Funder: NCI U24CA211006Abstract: The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) and International Cancer Genome Consortium (ICGC) curated consensus somatic mutation calls using whole exome sequencing (WES) and whole genome sequencing (WGS), respectively. Here, as part of the ICGC/TCGA Pan-Cancer Analysis of Whole Genomes (PCAWG) Consortium, which aggregated whole genome sequencing data from 2,658 cancers across 38 tumour types, we compare WES and WGS side-by-side from 746 TCGA samples, finding that ~80% of mutations overlap in covered exonic regions. We estimate that low variant allele fraction (VAF < 15%) and clonal heterogeneity contribute up to 68% of private WGS mutations and 71% of private WES mutations. We observe that ~30% of private WGS mutations trace to mutations identified by a single variant caller in WES consensus efforts. WGS captures both ~50% more variation in exonic regions and un-observed mutations in loci with variable GC-content. Together, our analysis highlights technological divergences between two reproducible somatic variant detection efforts

    Abstract We use experimental markets to examine whether preferences for societal benefits lead managers to invest in unprofitable green projects, what information they disclose regarding such investments, and how investors react to those disclosures. We find that managers who are shareholders in their company make green investments even when this reduces shareholder value. Moreover, managers voluntarily disclose to potential investors that they have made such green investments and tend to focus their disclosures on the societal benefits of their investment rather than on the cost to the company. Finally, the cost of the green investment to the managers and other current shareholders is lower when the managers disclose their green investment because potential investors&apos; standardized bids for the company are higher when managers disclose their green investments than when they do not. Moreover, this result is stronger when managers&apos; disclosures focus on the societal benefits of their investment rather than on the cost to the company. These results are consistent with managers and potential investors trading off personal wealth for societal benefits and help explain why managers&apos; voluntary disclosures often focus on the benefits to society and to the company rather than on the cost to the company. In addition, our study demonstrates the benefits of using experiments to study important corporate social responsibility issues that are difficult to address using archival data

    A comparison of static and dynamic cerebral autoregulation during mild whole-body cold stress in individuals with and without cervical spinal cord injury: a pilot study

Objectives: To characterize static and dynamic cerebral autoregulation (CA) of individuals with cervical spinal cord injury (SCI) compared to able-bodied controls in response to moderate increases in mean arterial pressure (MAP) caused by mild whole-body cold stress. Setting: Japan Methods: Five men with complete autonomic cervical SCI (sustained>5y) and six age-matched able-bodied men participated in hemodynamic, temperature, catecholamine and respiratory measurements for 60 min during three consecutive stages: baseline (10 min; 330C water through a thin-tubed whole-body suit), mild cold stress (20 min; 250C water) and post-cold recovery (30 min; 330C water). Static CA was determined as the ratio between mean changes in middle cerebral artery blood velocity and MAP, dynamic CA as transfer function coherence, gain and phase between spontaneous changes in MAP to middle cerebral artery blood velocity. Results: MAP increased in both groups during cold and post-cold recovery (mean differences: 5 to 10 mm Hg; main effect of time: p=0.001). Static CA was not different between the able-bodied vs the cervical SCI group (mean [95% CI] of between-group difference: -4 [-11 to 3] and -2 [-5 to 1] cm/s/mmHg for cold (p=0.22) and post-cold (p=0.24), respectively). At baseline, transfer function phase was shorter in the cervical SCI group (mean [95% CI] of between-group difference: 0.6 [0.2 to 1.0] rad; p=0.006), while between-group differences in changes in phase were not different in response to the cold stress (interaction term: p=0.06). Conclusions: This pilot study suggests that static CA is similar between individuals with cervical SCI and able-bodied controls in response to moderate increases in MAP, while dynamic CA may be impaired in cervical SCI due to disturbed sympathetic control
