South Carolina State Government: Organizational Succession Plans

    Get PDF
In the South Carolina state government, 43.4% of all full-time equivalent employees will be eligible to retire by the mid- to late-2020s. The potential loss of core organizational knowledge may occur as a result of the retirement of seasoned employees. Grounded by the transformational leadership theory, this qualitative case study explored the successful succession strategies of 8 Certified Public Managers (CPMs) in South Carolina state government organizations. Purposeful sampling led to selecting the 8 CPMs who each had more than 11 years of experience managing employees and each directly influenced the programmatic operations for their respective state government organizations. Data were obtained through individual semi-structured interviews and through state government organizational documents. Analysis included using codes to identify similar words and phrases, then recoding to categorize the codes into themes. Data transcriptions, coding, member checking, and methodological triangulation were used to strengthen the credibility of the findings. Thematic analysis identified 3 emergent themes within the data: succession implementation, succession continuity, and succession hindrances. The implications for positive social change include the potential for state government executive leadership to implement a succession program for all South Carolina state government organizations. The positive social change implications may provide standardization and structure for retaining core knowledge that could contribute to continuity, an increased focus on sustainable workforce capital, customer satisfaction, and social responsibility throughout communities in South Carolina

Resurrecting the Women of The Waste Land

This thesis argues that T.S. Eliot\u27s The Waste Land is Eliot\u27s version of a modern fertility ritual with women as the principal drivers of the narrative. Women show both the depth of desolation that spiritual bankruptcy brings, but ironically contain within them the hope and possibility for redemption. Through figures such as the Sybil, Madame Sosostris, Lil, Philomela, and Ganga, Eliot shows the full range of emotion and possibilities to be found in The Waste Land. Ultimately, women are the catalysts in the poem - they make up the steps of the fertility rituals set out by Jessie Weston in the book that so influenced Eliot: From Ritual to Romance. Ultimately, with the help of the women both in his life (Vivienne Eliot and Emily Hale) as well as those of ancient history and myth, Eliot completes his spiritual quest to find everlasting peace

Parents....an Invaluable Link to Student Success

    Get PDF
Research demonstrates the strong correlation between parental involvement and student achievement. This research, which involves studies that highlight the outcomes of parental involvement, will be presented. In addition, examples of parental involvement from tiers 1, 2, and 3 in the various PBIS systems in northwest Georgia will be given. Haralson County Schools will provide specific examples on how they have included not only parents, but also community stakeholders in their quest to increase participation. They will discuss specific strategies on how to engage parent/community stakeholders on a limited budget. Participants will walk away with ideas and strategies that have been successful in seven PBIS systems in northwest Georgia

    Disinhibition and Persistent Maladaptive Behavior

Objective: There is an urgent need to reduce overpopulation in U.S. prisons, which are inundated with individuals needing substance use treatment. Research on both substance use and antisocial behaviors highlight maladaptive beliefs and behaviors, while also implicating disinhibition as an important factor. Disinhibition is a dynamic trait that can be targeted with therapeutic interventions. The current study explored the relationships between neurocognitive disinhibition, substance use, and recidivism among incarcerated men. The study hypothesized that disinhibition would be associated with history of substance use, history of antisocial behavior, and institutional misconduct, as well as predicting recidivism over and above history of substance use. Method: This study analyzed an archival dataset of demographic, clinical, and neuropsychological measures among a sample of incarcerated men (N = 95). Results: Descriptive analyses showed meaningful relationships among history of substance use, history of antisocial behavior, institutional misconduct, disinhibition, and recidivism outcomes. Disinhibition was meaningfully associated with history of substance use (ß = 0.33, t = 3.07, p = .003, adjusted R2 = .09), history of antisocial behavior (ß = .25, t = 2.19, p = .032, adjusted R2 = .18), and institutional misconduct (ß = .270, t = 2.04, p = .047, adjusted R2 = .30), but not recidivism outcome (df = 1, Х2 = 0.73, p = .393). Conclusion: Limitations with statistical analyses may have contributed to a lack of support for neuroprediction of recidivism. Nonetheless, neurocognitive disinhibition may be a worthwhile construct in further research on biopsychosocial treatment of incarcerated or substance use populations

    Get PDF
A class action case lead audit was conducted by the Casualty Department in an attempt to identify Medicaid Beneficiaries who ingested a specific class action drug and they also received medical treatment specific to those caused by the class action drug. The results of the audit revealed a large number of MB who took the drug, received injury related treatment, but they were not active participants in the Global Class Action Law Suits. The Casualty Department active cases averaged about 2% of the MB identified through the audit. The goal of this project is to further enhance the current class action recoupment process and to increase revenue for SCDHHS

An agent-based model of greening a city for reducing pluvial flooding at a cultural heritage site

We present an agent-based model which explores the impact of green- ing a city for pluvial flood risk reduction, to inform planning decisions in cities. In particular we focus on the location of an archaeological site lying 2 meters below ground level in the city centre of Ravenna, Italy, which is subject to pluvial flooding. A map of Ravenna was divided into cells which could be eligible for modelled greening if they contained a car park, a street or a pedestrianised area. The number and location of cells greened varied with each run of the model. This was combined with precipitation and temperature data from Ravenna, and subse- quently estimated scores for evapotranspiration and permeability. In general, the greater number of greening measures introduced corresponded to a reduced vol- ume of excess rainwater. There was a particular effectiveness of greened streets at reducing excess runoff compared to car parks and pedestrian areas. Our results demonstrate the usefulness of ABM in the field of disaster risk management
