Optical frequency measurement of the 1S-3S two-photon transition in hydrogen

This article reports the first optical frequency measurement of the 1S−3S1\mathrm{S}-3\mathrm{S} transition in hydrogen. The excitation of this transition occurs at a wavelength of 205 nm which is obtained with two frequency doubling stages of a titanium sapphire laser at 820 nm. Its frequency is measured with an optical frequency comb. The second-order Doppler effect is evaluated from the observation of the motional Stark effect due to a transverse magnetic field perpendicular to the atomic beam. The measured value of the 1S1/2(F=1)−3S1/2(F=1)1\mathrm{S}_{1/2}(F=1)-3\mathrm{S}_{1/2}(F=1) frequency splitting is 2922742936.729(13)MHz2 922 742 936.729 (13) \mathrm{MHz} with a relative uncertainty of 4.5×10−124.5\times10^{-12}. After the measurement of the 1S−2S1\mathrm{S}-2\mathrm{S} frequency, this result is the most precise of the optical frequencies in hydrogen

Search for light long-lived neutral particles that decay to collimated pairs of leptons or light hadrons in pp collisions at s√ = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for light long-lived neutral particles with masses in the O(MeV–GeV) range is presented. The analysis targets the production of long-lived dark photons in the decay of a Higgs boson produced via gluon–gluon fusion or in association with a W boson. Events that contain displaced collimated Standard Model fermions reconstructed in the calorimeter or muon spectrometer are selected in 139 fb−1 of s√ = 13 TeV pp collision data collected by the ATLAS detector at the LHC. Background estimates for contributions from Standard Model processes and instrumental effects are extracted from data. The observed event yields are consistent with the expected background. Exclusion limits are reported on the production cross-section times branching fraction as a function of the mean proper decay length cτ of the dark photon, or as a function of the dark-photon mass and kinetic mixing parameter that quantifies the coupling between the Standard Model and potential hidden (dark) sectors. A Higgs boson branching fraction above 1% is excluded at 95% CL for a Higgs boson decaying into two dark photons for dark-photon mean proper decay lengths between 10 mm and 250 mm and dark photons with masses between 0.4 GeV and 2 GeV

Recurrent somatic alterations of FGFR1 and NTRK2 in pilocytic astrocytoma

Pilocytic astrocytoma, the most common childhood brain tumor, is typically associated with mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathway alterations. Surgically inaccessible midline tumors are therapeutically challenging, showing sustained tendency for progression and often becoming a chronic disease with substantial morbidities. Here we describe whole-genome sequencing of 96 pilocytic astrocytomas, with matched RNA sequencing (n = 73), conducted by the International Cancer Genome Consortium (ICGC) PedBrain Tumor Project. We identified recurrent activating mutations in FGFR1 and PTPN11 and new NTRK2 fusion genes in non-cerebellar tumors. New BRAF-activating changes were also observed. MAPK pathway alterations affected all tumors analyzed, with no other significant mutations identified, indicating that pilocytic astrocytoma is predominantly a single-pathway disease. Notably, we identified the same FGFR1 mutations in a subset of H3F3A-mutated pediatric glioblastoma with additional alterations in the NF1 gene. Our findings thus identify new potential therapeutic targets in distinct subsets of pilocytic astrocytoma and childhood glioblastoma

Reversed-phase liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC) has become a powerful and widely employed technique in the separation and analysis of a great variety of compounds with different functionalities. The most common type of stationary phase for RP-HPLC consists of nonpolar, hydrophobic organic species (e.g., octyl, octadecyl) attached by siloxane bonds to the surface of a silica support. In the first part of this article, a description of the many beneficial properties that make porous silica the most employed support in RP-HPLC will be presented, starting from the synthesis of silica. It is noteworthy that the chromatographic properties of the final column are strictly correlated to the preparation type. A silica surface possesses a number of attractive properties, but also some drawbacks. Unreacted or residual silanols interact with basic compounds and can induced peak tailing, which means a loss in chromatographic performance. This problem has lead many manufactures to produce stationary phases with reduced silanol activity which improve dramatically the peak shape of basic compounds. In the second part of this review, different approaches are proposed to obtain less reactive stationary phases

The exploration of the unique properties of stored and cooled beams of highly-charged ions as provided by heavy-ion storage rings has opened novel and fascinating research opportunities in the realm of atomic and nuclear physics research. Since the late 1980s, pioneering work has been performed at the CRYRING at Stockholm (Abrahamsson et al. 1993) and at the Test Storage Ring (TSR) at Heidelberg (Baumann et al. 1988). For the heaviest ions in the highest charge-states, a real quantum jump was achieved in the early 1990s by the commissioning of the Experimental Storage Ring (ESR) at GSI Helmholtzzentrum fĂŒr Schwerionenforschung (GSI) in Darmstadt (Franzke 1987) where challenging experiments on the electron dynamics in the strong field regime as well as nuclear physics studies on exotic nuclei and at the borderline to atomic physics were performed. Meanwhile also at Lanzhou a heavy-ion storage ring has been taken in operation, exploiting the unique research opportunities in particular for medium-heavy ions and exotic nuclei (Xia et al. 2002)
