    Primary open abductor reconstruction - a 5-10 year study

    Background: Gluteal tears are recognised as the source of pain over the greater trochanter. We investigated the outcome of primary open abductor tendon reconstruction with a 5 year follow-up. Methods: 165 consecutive hips underwent an open abductor tendon reconstruction, with all tears confirmed pre-operatively by MRI. Oxford hip scores (OHS) were assessed at the initial visit, and at 5 to 10 years. Results: The average pre-operative OHS was 22 (r: 7y – 34y) and average post-operative OHS was 40 a difference of 18 (p\u3c0.0001). Conclusion: Surgical reconstruction of degenerate abductor tendons should be considered in the presence of an MRI confirmed separation where clinical findings are consistent with the known tendon disruption. Open transosseous reconstruction reliably results in good pain relief at 5 to 10 years

    Chemistry in Externally FUV-irradiated Disks in the Outskirts of the Orion Nebula Cluster

    Most stars are born in stellar clusters, and their protoplanetary disks, which are the birthplaces of planets, can, therefore, be affected by the radiation of nearby massive stars. However, little is known about the chemistry of externally irradiated disks, including whether or not their properties are similar to the so-far better-studied isolated disks. Motivated by this question, we present ALMA Band 6 observations of two irradiated Class II protoplanetary disks in the outskirts of the Orion Nebula Cluster to explore the chemical composition of disks exposed to (external) far-ultraviolet (FUV) radiation fields: the 216-0939 disk and the binary system 253-1536A/B, which are exposed to radiation fields of 102–103 times the average interstellar radiation field. We detect lines from CO isotopologues, HCN, H2CO, and C2H toward both protoplanetary disks. Based on the observed disk-integrated line fluxes and flux ratios, we do not find significant differences between isolated and irradiated disks. The observed differences seem to be more closely related to the different stellar masses than to the external radiation field. This suggests that these disks are far enough away from the massive Trapezium stars, that their chemistry is no longer affected by external FUV radiation. Additional observations toward lower-mass disks and disks closer to the massive Trapezium stars are required to elucidate the level of external radiation required to make an impact on the chemistry of planet formation in different kinds of disks

    A Look Back, A Path Forward: Moving Toward Diversity and Inclusion in Cardiovascular Society Presidents

    Despite the number of female cardiologists increasing over time, women comprise only <15% of practicing cardiologists worldwide. Women cardiologists are less likely to be full professors, receive research funding, or have a registered clinical trial. Although there has been an increase in women authors of cardiovascular scientific publications over the past 40 years, women are still less likely to be first or senior authors, and they are underrepresented on cardiovascular journal editorial boards. It is well known that women hold few departmental leadership positions in medicine—they are less often cardiology division chiefs or fellowship program directors, and this holds true even in specialties that are female dominated. Additionally, there is a dearth of women and men from diverse backgrounds. Black people comprise 13% of the U.S. population but represent only 2% of cardiologists. Black cardiologists are underrepresented in leadership roles, as well as at the level of full professor. Similarly, only 2% of practicing cardiologists are Hispanic or Latino, and Indigenous people are underrepresented in both medicine and cardiology

    Reproductive Isolation in a Threespine Stickleback Hybrid Zone

    In many estuarine sites, morphological and genetic differences between anadromous and freshwater threespine sticklebacks are maintained despite breeding in sympatry. Here, we investigate the maintenance of this morphological divergence in a natural hybrid zone in the River Tyne, Scotland. We provide a morphological description of the hybrid zone, and using a Bayesian MCMC approach, identified distinct anadromous and freshwater genetic clusters. Anadromous and freshwater sticklebacks breed in spatial and temporal sympatry in the lower reaches of the River Tyne. The frequency of hybrids within these sites (33%) indicates prezygotic isolation is not complete, and suggests that assortative mating is not strong. However, significant heterozygote deficit and cytonuclear disequilibrium in juveniles collected from sympatric sites confirms that barriers to gene flow exist between the morphs in the wild. In addition, we found no evidence of a directional bias in hybridisation, although hybrids with anadromous mothers were more common because anadromous females outnumbered freshwater females within the hybrid zone.     Grain Surface Models and Data for Astrochemistry

    AbstractThe cross-disciplinary field of astrochemistry exists to understand the formation, destruction, and survival of molecules in astrophysical environments. Molecules in space are synthesized via a large variety of gas-phase reactions, and reactions on dust-grain surfaces, where the surface acts as a catalyst. A broad consensus has been reached in the astrochemistry community on how to suitably treat gas-phase processes in models, and also on how to present the necessary reaction data in databases; however, no such consensus has yet been reached for grain-surface processes. A team of ∼25 experts covering observational, laboratory and theoretical (astro)chemistry met in summer of 2014 at the Lorentz Center in Leiden with the aim to provide solutions for this problem and to review the current state-of-the-art of grain surface models, both in terms of technical implementation into models as well as the most up-to-date information available from experiments and chemical computations. This review builds on the results of this workshop and gives an outlook for future directions

    Search for the glueball candidates f0(1500) and fJ(1710) in gamma gamma collisions

    Data taken with the ALEPH detector at LEP1 have been used to search for gamma gamma production of the glueball candidates f0(1500) and fJ(1710) via their decay to pi+pi-. No signal is observed and upper limits to the product of gamma gamma width and pi+pi- branching ratio of the f0(1500) and the fJ(1710) have been measured to be Gamma_(gamma gamma -> f0(1500)). BR(f0(1500)->pi+pi-) < 0.31 keV and Gamma_(gamma gamma -> fJ(1710)). BR(fJ(1710)->pi+pi-) < 0.55 keV at 95% confidence level.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figure

    Search for supersymmetry with a dominant R-parity violating LQDbar couplings in e+e- collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 130GeV to 172 GeV

    A search for pair-production of supersymmetric particles under the assumption that R-parity is violated via a dominant LQDbar coupling has been performed using the data collected by ALEPH at centre-of-mass energies of 130-172 GeV. The observed candidate events in the data are in agreement with the Standard Model expectation. This result is translated into lower limits on the masses of charginos, neutralinos, sleptons, sneutrinos and squarks. For instance, for m_0=500 GeV/c^2 and tan(beta)=sqrt(2) charginos with masses smaller than 81 GeV/c^2 and neutralinos with masses smaller than 29 GeV/c^2 are excluded at the 95% confidence level for any generation structure of the LQDbar coupling.Comment: 32 pages, 30 figure
