The Effect of Clouds on Air Showers Observation from Space
Issues relating to extensive air showers observation by a space-borne
fluorescence detector and the effects of clouds on the observations are
investigated using Monte Carlo simulation. The simulations assume the presence
of clouds with varying altitudes and optical depths. Simulated events are
reconstructed assuming a cloud-free atmosphere. While it is anticipated that
auxiliary instruments, such as LIDAR (LIght Detection And Ranging), will be
employed to measure the atmospheric conditions during actual observation, it is
still possible that these instruments may fail to recognize the presence of a
cloud in a particular shower observation. The purpose of this study is to
investigate the effects on the reconstructed shower parameters in such cases.
Reconstruction results are shown for both monocular and stereo detectors and
for the two limiting cases of optically thin, and optically thick clouds.Comment: 31 pages, 13 figure
Observation of Parity Violation in the Omega-minus -> Lambda + K-minus Decay
The alpha decay parameter in the process Omega-minus -> Lambda + K-minus has
been measured from a sample of 4.50 million unpolarized Omega-minus decays
recorded by the HyperCP (E871) experiment at Fermilab and found to be [1.78 +/-
0.19(stat) +/- 0.16(syst)]{\times}10^{-2}. This is the first unambiguous
evidence for a nonzero alpha decay parameter, and hence parity violation, in
the Omega-minus -> Lambda + K-minus decay.Comment: 10 pages, 7 figure
Very long optical path-length from a compact multi-pass cell
The multiple-pass optical cell is an important tool for laser absorption
spectroscopy and its many applications. For most practical applications, such
as trace-gas detection, a compact and robust design is essential. Here we
report an investigation into a multi-pass cell design based on a pair of
cylindrical mirrors, with a particular focus on achieving very long optical
paths. We demonstrate a path-length of 50.31 m in a cell with 40 mm diameter
mirrors spaced 88.9 mm apart - a 3-fold increase over the previously reported
longest path-length obtained with this type of cell configuration. We
characterize the mechanical stability of the cell and describe the practical
conditions necessary to achieve very long path-lengths
HyperCP: A high-rate spectrometer for the study of charged hyperon and kaon decays
The HyperCP experiment (Fermilab E871) was designed to search for rare
phenomena in the decays of charged strange particles, in particular CP
violation in and hyperon decays with a sensitivity of
. Intense charged secondary beams were produced by 800 GeV/c protons
and momentum-selected by a magnetic channel. Decay products were detected in a
large-acceptance, high-rate magnetic spectrometer using multiwire proportional
chambers, trigger hodoscopes, a hadronic calorimeter, and a muon-detection
system. Nearly identical acceptances and efficiencies for hyperons and
antihyperons decaying within an evacuated volume were achieved by reversing the
polarities of the channel and spectrometer magnets. A high-rate
data-acquisition system enabled 231 billion events to be recorded in twelve
months of data-taking.Comment: 107 pages, 45 Postscript figures, 14 tables, Elsevier LaTeX,

Defining levels of dengue virus serotype-specific neutralizing antibodies induced by a live attenuated tetravalent dengue vaccine (Tak-003)
The four dengue virus serotypes (DENV1-4) infect several hundred million people each year living in tropical and sub-tropical regions. Clinical development of DENV vaccines is difficult because immunity to a single serotype increases risk of severe disease during a second infection with a new serotype. Leading vaccines are based on tetravalent formulations to induce simultaneous and balanced protective immunity to all 4 serotypes. TAK-003 is a tet-ravalent live attenuated dengue vaccine candidate developed by Takeda Vaccines Inc, which is currently being evaluated in phase 3 efficacy trials. Here, we use antibody depletion methods and chimeric, epitope transplant DENVs to characterize the specificity of neutralizing antibodies in dengue-naïve adults and non-human primates immunized with TAK-003. Our results demonstrate that TAK-003 induced high levels of DENV2 neutralizing antibodies that recognized unique (type-specific) epitopes on DENV2. In contrast, most vaccinated subjects developed lower levels of DENV1, DENV3 and DENV4 neutralizing antibodies that mainly targeted epitopes that were conserved (cross-reactive) between serotypes
The range and level of impurities in CO2 streams from different carbon capture sources
For CO2 capture and storage deployment, the impact of impurities in the gas or dense phase CO2 stream arising from fossil fuel power plants, or large scale industrial emitters, is of fundamental importance to the safe and economic transportation and storage of the captured CO2. This paper reviews the range and level of impurities expected from the main capture technologies used with fossil-fuelled power plants in addition to other CO2 emission-intensive industries. Analysis is presented with respect to the range of impurities present in CO2 streams captured using pre-combustion, post-combustion and oxy-fuel technologies, in addition to an assessment of the different parameters affecting the CO2 mixture composition. This includes modes of operation of the power plant, and different technologies for the reduction and removal of problematic components such as water and acid gases (SOx/NOx). A literature review of data demonstrates that the purity of CO2 product gases from carbon capture sources is highly dependent upon the type of technology used. This paper also addresses the CO2 purification technologies available for the removal of CO2 impurities from raw oxy-fuel flue gas, such as Hg and non-condensable compounds. CO2 purities of over 99% are achievable using post-combustion capture technologies with low levels of the main impurities of N2, Ar and O2. However, CO2 capture from oxy-fuel combustion and integrated gasification combined cycle power plants will need to take into consideration the removal of non-condensables, acid gas species, and other contaminants. The actual level of CO2 purity required will be dictated by a combination of transport and storage requirements, and process economics
Case Report: Precision Medicine Target Revealed by In Vitro Modeling of Relapsed, Refractory Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia From a Child With Neurofibromatosis
Children with neurofibromatosis have a higher risk of developing juvenile myelomonocytic leukemia and acute myeloid leukemia, but rarely develop B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (B-ALL). Through in-vitro modeling, a novel NF1 p.L2467 frameshift (fs) mutation identified in a relapsed/refractory Ph-like B-ALL patient with neurofibromatosis demonstrated cytokine independence and increased RAS signaling, indicative of leukemic transformation. Furthermore, these cells were sensitive to the MEK inhibitors trametinib and mirdametinib. Bi-allelic NF1 loss of function may be a contributing factor to relapse and with sensitivity to MEK inhibitors, suggests a novel precision medicine target in the setting of neurofibromatosis patients with B-ALL.Susan L. Search for the Rare Decay KL --> pi0 ee
The KTeV/E799 experiment at Fermilab has searched for the rare kaon decay
KL--> pi0ee. This mode is expected to have a significant CP violating
component. The measurement of its branching ratio could support the Standard
Model or could indicate the existence of new physics. This letter reports new
results from the 1999-2000 data set. One event is observed with an expected
background at 0.99 +/- 0.35 events. We set a limit on the branching ratio of
3.5 x 10^(-10) at the 90% confidence level. Combining the results with the
dataset taken in 1997 yields the final KTeV result: BR(KL --> pi0 ee) < 2.8 x
10^(-10) at 90% CL.Comment: 4 pages, three figure
