A model for problems' representation at various generic levels to assist inventive design
International audienceInventive design requires specific competences. Designing involves creating new concepts out of acquired knowledge and requires cognitive competences. TRIZ, a theory for inventive problem-solving, is based on the abstraction of knowledge to be able to make analogies with any technical domain. This principle of abstraction is of great interest, but it also requires the ability to shift from a high level of abstraction to a more specific level. The links between abstract models of problems and more specific ones are missing in TRIZ. This paper proposes a UML model to make this link to enable the construction of abstract formulation of problems from a functional description of the systems. A case study illustrates the different descriptions of the problems and the link between them
IRIM at TRECVID 2012: Semantic Indexing and Instance Search
International audienceThe IRIM group is a consortium of French teams work- ing on Multimedia Indexing and Retrieval. This paper describes its participation to the TRECVID 2012 se- mantic indexing and instance search tasks. For the semantic indexing task, our approach uses a six-stages processing pipelines for computing scores for the likeli- hood of a video shot to contain a target concept. These scores are then used for producing a ranked list of im- ages or shots that are the most likely to contain the tar- get concept. The pipeline is composed of the following steps: descriptor extraction, descriptor optimization, classi cation, fusion of descriptor variants, higher-level fusion, and re-ranking. We evaluated a number of dif- ferent descriptors and tried di erent fusion strategies. The best IRIM run has a Mean Inferred Average Pre- cision of 0.2378, which ranked us 4th out of 16 partici- pants. For the instance search task, our approach uses two steps. First individual methods of participants are used to compute similrity between an example image of in- stance and keyframes of a video clip. Then a two-step fusion method is used to combine these individual re- sults and obtain a score for the likelihood of an instance to appear in a video clip. These scores are used to ob- tain a ranked list of clips the most likely to contain the queried instance. The best IRIM run has a MAP of 0.1192, which ranked us 29th on 79 fully automatic runs

Tumor Necrosis Factor-Alpha-Elicited Stimulation of Gamma-Secretase Is Mediated by C-Jun N-Terminal Kinase-Dependent Phosphorylation of Presenilin and Nicastrin
gamma-Secretase is a multiprotein complex composed of presenilin (PS), nicastrin (NCT), Aph-1, and Pen-2, and it catalyzes the final proteolytic step in the processing of amyloid precursor protein to generate amyloid- beta. Our previous results showed that tumor necrosis factor-alpha ( TNF- alpha) can potently stimulate gamma-secretase activity through a c-Jun N- terminal kinase (JNK)-dependent pathway. Here, we demonstrate that TNF- alpha triggers JNK-dependent serine/threonine phosphorylation of PS1 and NCT to stimulate gamma-secretase activity. Blocking of JNK activity with a potent JNK inhibitor (SP600125) reduces TNF-alpha-triggered phosphorylation of PS1 and NCT. Consistent with this, we show that activated JNKs can be copurified with gamma- secretase complexes and that active recombinant JNK2 can promote the phosphorylation of PS1 and NCT in vitro. Using site-directed mutagenesis and a synthetic peptide, we clearly show that the Ser(319)Thr(320) motif in PS1 is an important JNK phosphorylation site that is critical for the TNF-alpha-elicited regulation of gamma-secretase. This JNK phosphorylation of PS1 at Ser(319) Thr(320) enhances the stability of the PS1 C-terminal fragment that is necessary for gamma-secretase activity. Together, our findings strongly suggest that JNK is a critical intracellular mediator of TNF-alpha- elicited regulation of gamma-secretase and governs the pivotal step in the assembly of functional gamma-secretase

Neonatal infection and 5-year neurodevelopmental outcome of very preterm infants.
International audienceOBJECTIVE: To determine whether neonatal infections are associated with a higher risk of adverse neurodevelopment at 5 years of age in a population-based cohort of very preterm children. METHODS: We included all live births between 22 and 32 weeks of gestation, from 9 regions in France, in 1997 (EPIPAGE study). Of the 2665 live births, 2277 were eligible for a follow-up evaluation at 5 years of age: 1769 had a medical examination and 1495 underwent cognitive assessment. Cerebral palsy and cognitive impairment were studied as a function of early-onset sepsis (EOS) and late-onset sepsis (LOS), after adjustment for potential confounding factors, in multivariate logistic regression models. RESULTS: A total of 139 (5%) of the 2665 live births included in the study presented with EOS alone (without associated LOS), 752 (28%) had LOS alone (without associated EOS), and 64 (2%) displayed both EOS and LOS. At 5 years of age, the frequency of cerebral palsy was 9% (157 of 1769) and that of cognitive impairment was 12% (177 of 1495). The frequency of cerebral palsy was higher in infants with isolated EOS (odds ratio [OR]: 1.70 [95% confidence interval (CI): 0.84-3.45]) or isolated LOS (OR: 1.71 [95% CI: 1.14-2.56]) than in uninfected infants, and this risk was even higher in cases of combined EOS and LOS (OR: 2.33 [95% CI: 1.02-5.33]). There was no association between neonatal infection and cognitive impairment. CONCLUSIONS: Neonatal infections in these very preterm infants were associated with a higher risk of cerebral palsy at the age of 5 years, particularly in infants presenting with both EOS and LOS
