Particle Size Inversion from Spectrally Resolved Full-Field Forward Scattering

[EN] Ensemble particle sizing has traditionally relied on inversion of extinction measurements for the characterization of the particle size distribution (PSD) in particulate media. However, particulate media induce complex phase changes that contain valuable information about their structure. Here, we propose the use of coherent detection to derive particle size distributions in inhomogeneous samples from light scattering. This is achieved by exploiting THz waves, which allow for both extinction and refractive index information to be directly retrieved. A modified version of the iterative Twomey method is presented in order to take into account this information. Additionally, by using a forward model based on the Waterman-Truell formula for the complex refractive index, samples with absorption in both the matrix medium and the particulate phase can be measured. The inversion needs neither a priori assumptions nor constraints regarding the PSD shape. Numerical simulations show that this full-field approach reduces the error of the inversion process potentially up to 65% compared with inversion using only extinction data. Experimental validation of the technique is provided by measuring calibrated spherical glass particles inside a PTFE matrix and retrieving the PSD in the case of monodisperse and polydisperse samples showing an enhancement of up to 32% in comparison to inversion from extinction data. One of the consequences of a higher average age and a better quality of life of the elderly is, precisely, the lack of people who assume them. Following these lines, this study concerns the risk of abandonment and the most important variables in the prediction of this risk. Two elderly groups (those that live at home with their families and those that live in rest homes) of a total of 121 elders is the studied population. By means of the statistics technique of logistic regression, the variables with greater influence to discriminate between the two groups and predict the risk of abandonment were obtained. This paper asks how religious architecture in the urban periphery of Lima, acquires an expression in line with Vatican II? Cities like Lima overwhelmed by the provincial immigrants living in urban peripheries, will be the scene in which the actors of the new districts built their new parishes. In this areas, cultural, ideological, political and social factors, together with the liturgical changes, will condition the religious architecture, his messages and meanings. This research seeks to establish as Second Vatican Council and ideologies of the late twentieth century in Lima Norte, determine the expression of the religious architecture, displaying their close relationship with theology, ecclesiology and liturgy; pastoral missions; marxism; the ecumenical spirit —christians of other faiths; Cultural and Popular Churches; the postmodernism; and liberationist and developmentalist discourses.

E-learning education has become a reality that transcends the educational environment. This research focused on continuouseducation of working people for whom e-learning offers many advantages given the characteristics of this group. The tutoringprocess is key when introducing improvements and contributing to the progress of this educational experience. The research herepresented was intended to analyze the functions performed by teletutors in carrying out their educational function, highlighting elearningtutoring styles. The methodology employed was qualitative, and in-depth interviews with tutors of 29 online courses were conducted. The data were gathered within the framework of a program of continuous training courses for autonomous workers from small and medium-sized companies. The analyses performed allowed for in-depth study of the dimensions and functions performed by tutors in the educational activity. The Atlas.ti software was used for qualitative analysis that allowed for the construction of several category systems relating to a series of comprehensive theoretical frameworks. Several flow charts were drawn for each one of these theoretical frameworks that allowed for a better understanding of the relationships between the categories and dimensions of each tutor participating in the study. It was also possible to establish tutor typologies according to their roles and functions, the resources used in tutoring and the features that characterize students that participate in e-learnin

Learning on real robots from experience and simple user feedback

In this article we describe a novel algorithm that allows fast and continuous learning on a physical robot working in a real environment. The learning process is never stopped and new knowledge gained from robot-environment interactions can be incorporated into the controller at any time. Our algorithm lets a human observer control the reward given to the robot, hence avoiding the burden of defining a reward function. Despite the highly-non-deterministic reinforcement, through the experimental results described in this paper, we will see how the learning processes are never stopped and are able to achieve fast robot adaptation to the diversity of different situations the robot encounters while it is moving in several environments. This work was supported by the research grant TIN2009-07737 of the Spanish Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad, and María Barbeito program of the Xunta de Galicia
