Experimental intravascular hemolysis induces hemodynamic and pathological pulmonary hypertension: association with accelerated purine metabolism
Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is emerging as a serious complication associated with hemolytic disorders, and plexiform lesions (PXL) have been reported in patients with sickle cell disease (SCD). We hypothesized that repetitive hemolysis per se induces PH and angioproliferative vasculopathy and evaluated a new mechanism for hemolysis-associated PH (HA-PH) that involves the release of adenosine deaminase (ADA) and purine nucleoside phosphorylase (PNP) from erythrocytes. In healthy rats, repetitive admin- istration of hemolyzed autologous blood (HAB) for 10 days produced reversible pulmonary parenchymal injury and vascular remodeling and PH. Moreover, the combination of a single dose of Sugen-5416 (SU, 200mg/kg) and 10-day HAB treatment resulted in severe and progressive obliterative PH and formation of PXL (Day 26, right ventricular peak systolic pressure (mmHg): 26.1 1.1, 41.5 0.5 and 85.1 5.9 in untreated, HAB treated and SUþHAB treated rats, respectively). In rats, repeti- tive administration of HAB increased plasma ADA activity and reduced urinary adenosine levels. Similarly, SCD patients had higher plasma ADA and PNP activity and accelerated adenosine, inosine, and guanosine metabolism than healthy controls. Our study provides evidence that hemolysis per se leads to the development of angioproliferative PH. We also report the development of a rat model of HA-PH that closely mimics pulmonary vasculopathy seen in patients with HA-PH. Finally, this study suggests that in hemolytic diseases released ADA and PNP may increase the risk of PH, likely by abolishing the vasoprotective effects of adenosine, inosine and guanosine. Further characterization of this new rat model of hemolysis-induced angioproliferative PH and additional studies of the role of purines metabolism in HA-PH are warranted
Internal alignments of red versus blue discs in dark matter haloes
Large surveys have shown that red galaxies are preferentially aligned with their haloes, while blue galaxies have a more isotropic distribution. Since haloes generally align with their filaments, this introduces a bias in the measurement of the cosmic shear from weak lensing. It is therefore vitally important to understand why this difference arises. We explore the stability of different disc orientations within triaxial haloes. We show that, in the absence of gas, the disc orientation is most stable when its spin is along the minor axis of the halo. Instead when gas cools on to a disc, it is able to form in almost arbitrary orientation, including off the main planes of the halo (but avoiding an orientation perpendicular to the halo's intermediate axis). Substructure helps gasless galaxies reach alignment with the halo faster, but has less effect on galaxies when gas is cooling on to the disc. Our results provide a novel and natural interpretation for why red, gas poor galaxies are preferentially aligned with their halo, while blue, star-forming, galaxies have nearly random orientations, without requiring a connection between galaxies' current star formation rate and their merger history
Oceanographic Observations in Chilean Coastal Waters Between Valdivia and Concepcion
The physical oceanography of the biologically productive coastal waters of central Chile (36 degrees to 40 degrees S) is relatively unknown. In December 1998 we made a short exploratory cruise between Valdivia (40 degrees S) and Concepcion (37.8 degrees S) taking temperature, salinity, oxygen, and current velocity profiles. Coincident sea surface temperature and color measurements were obtained by satellite. The results showed an area dominated by wind-induced coastal upwelling, river runoff, intrusion of offshore eddies, mixing, and heating. Upwelling centers were found over the shelf at three locations: inshore of Mocha Island, off Valdivia, and off Lavapie Point. At these centers, equatorial subsurface water (ESSW) intrudes into the coastal waters, sometimes affecting the surface waters. Since ESSW has characteristically low-oxygen and high-salinity values, it is easily detected. Off Valdivia, runoff imparts stratification, while farther north, solar heating and reduced mixing may facilitate stratification. In some areas, even strong winds would not destroy the stratification imparted by the advection of buoyancy that occurs during the upwelling process. Strong equatorward currents (\u3e1 m s(-1)) in the form of an upwelling jet were found off Lavapie Point. This is also the location of an intruding anticyclone. Elsewhere, currents were mainly northward but highly variable because of intrusions from offshore eddies. The sea surface temperature and ocean color images show a complex field of onshore and offshore intrusions combined with the effects of mixing on chlorophyll concentrations. The residence time of upwelled water on the shelf is estimated to be less than 1 week
Four-shooter: a large format charge-coupled-device camera for the Hale telescope
We describe an astronomical camera for the 200-in. Hale telescope using four 800 X800 Texas Instruments CCDs in an optical arrangement that allows imaging of a contiguous 1600-pixel-square region of sky. The system employs reimaging optics to yield a scale of 0.33 arcsec per pixel, a good match to the best seeing conditions at Palomar Observatory. Modern high-efficiency coatings are used in the complex optical system to yield a throughput at peak efficiency of nearly 50% (including the losses in the telescope), corresponding to a quantum efficiency on the sky of about 30%. The system uses a fifth CCD in a spectroscopic channel, and it is possible to obtain simultaneous imaging and spectroscopic observations with the system. The camera may also be used in a scanning mode, in which the telescope tracking rate is offset, and the charge is clocked in the chips in such a manner as to keep the charge image aligned with the optical image. In this way, a survey for high-redshift quasars has been carried out over a large area of sky. The instrument has produced images for the most distant clusters of galaxies yet discovered as well as spectra of the most distant galaxies yet observed
Critical structure factor in Ising systems
We perform a large-scale Monte Carlo simulation of the three-dimensional
Ising model on simple cubic lattices of size L^3 with L=128 and 256. We
determine the corresponding structure factor (Fourier transform of the
two-point function) and compare it with several approximations and with
experimental results. We also compute the turbidity as a function of the
momentum of the incoming radiation, focusing in particular on the deviations
from the Ornstein-Zernicke expression of Puglielli and Ford.Comment: 16 page
Limits to Rest-Frame Ultraviolet Emission From Far-Infrared-Luminous z~6 Quasar Hosts
We report on a Hubble Space Telescope search for rest-frame ultraviolet
emission from the host galaxies of five far-infrared-luminous
quasars and the hot-dust free quasar SDSS J0005-0006. We perform 2D
surface brightness modeling for each quasar using a Markov-Chain Monte-Carlo
estimator, to simultaneously fit and subtract the quasar point source in order
to constrain the underlying host galaxy emission. We measure upper limits for
the quasar host galaxies of mag and mag, corresponding to
stellar masses of . These stellar mass limits are
consistent with the local - relation. Our flux limits
are consistent with those predicted for the UV stellar populations of
host galaxies, but likely in the presence of significant dust
( mag). We also detect a total of up
to 9 potential quasar companion galaxies surrounding five of the six
quasars, separated from the quasars by 1.4''-3.2'', or 8.4-19.4 kpc, which may
be interacting with the quasar hosts. These nearby companion galaxies have UV
absolute magnitudes of -22.1 to -19.9 mag, and UV spectral slopes of
-2.0 to -0.2, consistent with luminous star-forming galaxies at .
These results suggest that the quasars are in dense environments typical of
luminous galaxies. However, we cannot rule out the possibility that
some of these companions are foreground interlopers. Infrared observations with
the James Webb Space Telescope will be needed to detect the quasar

A Cautionary Tale: MARVELS Brown Dwarf Candidate Reveals Itself To Be A Very Long Period, Highly Eccentric Spectroscopic Stellar Binary
We report the discovery of a highly eccentric, double-lined spectroscopic
binary star system (TYC 3010-1494-1), comprising two solar-type stars that we
had initially identified as a single star with a brown dwarf companion. At the
moderate resolving power of the MARVELS spectrograph and the spectrographs used
for subsequent radial-velocity (RV) measurements (R ~ <30,000), this particular
stellar binary mimics a single-lined binary with an RV signal that would be
induced by a brown dwarf companion (Msin(i)~50 M_Jup) to a solar-type primary.
At least three properties of this system allow it to masquerade as a single
star with a very low-mass companion: its large eccentricity (e~0.8), its
relatively long period (P~238 days), and the approximately perpendicular
orientation of the semi-major axis with respect to the line of sight (omega~189
degrees). As a result of these properties, for ~95% of the orbit the two sets
of stellar spectral lines are completely blended, and the RV measurements based
on centroiding on the apparently single-lined spectrum is very well fit by an
orbit solution indicative of a brown dwarf companion on a more circular orbit
(e~0.3). Only during the ~5% of the orbit near periastron passage does the
true, double-lined nature and large RV amplitude of ~15 km/s reveal itself. The
discovery of this binary system is an important lesson for RV surveys searching
for substellar companions; at a given resolution and observing cadence, a
survey will be susceptible to these kinds of astrophysical false positives for
a range of orbital parameters. Finally, for surveys like MARVELS that lack the
resolution for a useful line bisector analysis, it is imperative to monitor the
peak of the cross-correlation function for suspicious changes in width or
shape, so that such false positives can be flagged during the candidate vetting

The APOKASC Catalog: An Asteroseismic and Spectroscopic Joint Survey of Targets in the Kepler Fields
We present the first APOKASC catalog of spectroscopic and asteroseismic
properties of 1916 red giants observed in the Kepler fields. The spectroscopic
parameters provided from the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution
Experiment project are complemented with asteroseismic surface gravities,
masses, radii, and mean densities determined by members of the Kepler
Asteroseismology Science Consortium. We assess both random and systematic
sources of error and include a discussion of sample selection for giants in the
Kepler fields. Total uncertainties in the main catalog properties are of order
80 K in Teff , 0.06 dex in [M/H], 0.014 dex in log g, and 12% and 5% in mass
and radius, respectively; these reflect a combination of systematic and random
errors. Asteroseismic surface gravities are substantially more precise and
accurate than spectroscopic ones, and we find good agreement between their mean
values and the calibrated spectroscopic surface gravities. There are, however,
systematic underlying trends with Teff and log g. Our effective temperature
scale is between 0-200 K cooler than that expected from the Infrared Flux
Method, depending on the adopted extinction map, which provides evidence for a
lower value on average than that inferred for the Kepler Input Catalog (KIC).
We find a reasonable correspondence between the photometric KIC and
spectroscopic APOKASC metallicity scales, with increased dispersion in KIC
metallicities as the absolute metal abundance decreases, and offsets in Teff
and log g consistent with those derived in the literature. We present mean
fitting relations between APOKASC and KIC observables and discuss future
